    Is “hoarding-lite” just…saving up?

I may have invented that term and I am fairly certain I don't know what it means. So...yes?

It's just weird. I get frustrated, because I've been doing the classics/farming thing forever and it works for me, but for years, every time I'd talk about it, people would either tell me my actual experience was wrong and it didn't actually work, or make increasingly bizarre excuses for why it only worked for me and could never work for anyone else (you've been playing forever, you're in a top alliance (ha, not anymore!), you're not free to play, etc).

Now there is an actual documented example of another player doing the same thing, and it working exactly the same way, and plenty of others offering similar evidence. PLUS they've significantly improved classics relatively recently, and people are STILL like "nope classics are awful, won't ever pull unless they do [insert X completely unrealistic thing]"

    Where are people saying that?

Discord definitely has some people who are convinced pulling Classics is a waste of CP, and hoarding for Anniversary or a 550 pull is the only way to go

Well if they want to compete, they're not wrong.
Classics will get all of your 5s up evenly, but to get all to 500 you're looking at, I dunno, 5 years?
And then you'll have guys like Abby at 500.
It's A LOT faster to get the 10 5s that really matter to 500+, from special stores.
I'm not sure I'd bet on MPQ being around for another 5 years.

I don't get this either. If the game is ending in a few years, would you really want to spend two of those years hoarding, making ZERO roster progress?

    Why hoard two years?
This month you can make progress on Colossus via the Omega release store.
There's vaults with colourless 5* shards.
There's a vault with KK and Storm.

I'm not saying go all in on one char, I'm saying level about 10 instead of bottom feeders like Abby and Odin.

Also worth noting...not too long ago, you could have replaced "Abigail and Odin" with "Phoenix and Surfer" in your statement. Going after those two characters would've been non-optimal, because they were terrible.

But this week I'm running Surfer/Phoenix, and that team has 900,000 combined HP and can oneshot Chasm off any power, or even a critical match.

Characters that are bad now aren't necessarily going to be bad forever.

Yes, but with their recent glacial pace and track record of reworking 5s, I'd rather not hold my breath.
The last semi-decent one was Iron Man, and that was... 6 months ago?

Well, remember they buffed Yellowjacket, for reasons that remain completely unclear -- he's an absolute terror now, way stronger than he was. Gambit got a good buff too.

A few people in this very thread are saying some version of that!

The sentiment is also pretty universal in Line and in Discord, and anyplace else that high level players congregate.

The real problem is that when everyone follows the same roster building strategy, everyone ends up with the same roster. And fighting against 1000 players that all have the same roster makes for a pretty boring metagame.

Do you mean me? If so then no, I am just saying letting others choose the boosted characters doesn't benefit me personally, not anything else. Otherwise who cares what other players say? Play your own MPQ. 😎

Not you. And like I said, I can't play my own MPQ. You can only play this game against other people, and every other player I match with has EXACTLY the same roster, because they all follow exactly the same roster building strategy.

The Sheep syndrome in MPQ is definitely high. A lot of that comes from the artificial player created concept of "defensive teams". Which is sort of strange considering PvE is the main game. I dunno how you change or fix that. Maybe the Devs should unleash this new MMR we will all hate, maybe it might be OK?

I cannot even begin to describe the uproar from the PRIME CC. Don't get me wrong, it was simple 1,1,1 grill intended to be a FLEX for his alliance buddies. But I kid you not, that was a profound PROMETHEUS moment in the game.

Look it up! The tradition of the forumites calling out perceived cheating is as old as the forum itself.

Batman kipper makes the Iron man go go. If you brush your teeth you will not get Sabretooth.

I speak PvP pretty fluently (I helped invent some of the jargon we all still use) and I have zero idea what @Phumade was trying to say there.

I'm not completely surprised. pumping the points is a different philosophy than s2. But in S1, you can keep pumping the points higher, to "encourage" more hops to maintain placement. Its not always easy to keep up with the treadmill, so its way to create leaderboard separation when everyone has access to essentially the same ques.

So in S2, you take direct action to control placement etc. But in a shard like S1, rosters can differentiate by making placements about making consistent 150+ hops, tracking shields, and creating dilemna for the chasers on how many hops they have left.

People like to assume that placements are pre-decided, which is not true. But the best resourced or most committed players, will always play in packs for that very reason.

Oh no, we were talking about this post!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but ironically cupcakes were developed in S2 by crewsaders before the dawn of seasons. And they were actually the first ones to bake for guests of the room. The prometheus moment was coupling CC with the intent to shield hop and maximizes bounces.

I can't imagine the first time that S. grilled in the room and everyone goes ****!

I'll tell you my other Prometheus moment. Someone explained how the very first 1/Max 3/ 1* trapcake worked. The room was dumbfounded as they watched blue wipe after wipe roll in. And then we had that epic thread about how someone got tripled by a baker farming reds

You could see the lightbulbs turn on. You mean players are colluding and communicating?????

Ohhhhhh I see. You were talking about the first cupcake! I literally didn't understand what you were saying!

So yes, we (crews) were the first ones who figured it out, and I was there the first time S. did it. We thought it was hilarious! You're right, we mostly used it to give easier fights to guests who couldn't handle our teams.

It was weaponized after he left our alliance due to some drama and joined the group who ran s1. They were college football fans -- that's why it was dubbed "cupcake" (we'd called it "small team," admittedly not as catchy). Those guys figured out how they could use the idea to score a billion points.

(Apologies to anyone who didn't catch any of that -- tldr, the biggest jerk/sniper in the history of the game, while a member of the biggest jerk/sniper alliance in the history of the game, accidentally created the biggest point-scoring exploit in the history of the game. It's really pretty funny.)

I would have enjoy the stories of the various alliances :)

It has becomes part of the 10-year history of MPQ.

I only heard snippets of these stories, but I been seen enough to know there’s a LOT OF DRAMA behind the scenes.

It would be a fun read!

I'm sure there's way more, (and way more interesting) stuff in the 5 or 6 years since I've been a part of anything relevant -- but the early days are still pretty neat.

What's funny is that almost all the stuff everybody still does in competitive PvP was established by a few very, very smart people in the first few months that shields existed, back in 2014. Sadly I don't believe any of them are still playing the game.

  • Bad

I'd rather play other type of guild competitive games.
To never fail hopping shields is some skill that I never really mastered 100%.
To have to communicate by Line continuously for to play pvp it would be something pretty obnoxious to me. And of course joining a top guild demanding me to get more than 2000 points it would be something awful given the hateful state of chasmpvp thanks to BCS.
So although applauding all the committed players, for me PvE is more than ever the main game.

and some of those people are real loudmouths too. Stickers this. Meme that, Don't get me wrong, one room sure, but news rooms, bracket rooms AND seperate discussion rooms. Lol I totally get it. Its not for everyone. Its ALOT of social chat. The unspoken elephant is that LINE is alot more than just mpq topics. Its absolutely the equivalent of whatsapp and more like the webpage version of facebook.

Coming this spring on Viceland, the show we've all been waiting for, Dark Side of MPQ.

    Including these unmissable moments:

"Quick everybody, Spider-Derek has put out a baguette...hit it!"
"Let's check in with the CHECK ROOM! CHECK!"
"Uh, oh The AwesomeSaucermen alliance just hit LolNoob2006 - GET THEM!"
"Are we having chicken for lunch? Oh wait sorry...this message was meant for my wife"

I did try and look up "mpq prometheus moment" but Google took me directly back to this thread as the first suggestion! The second option was that back in 2017 Django Unbuffed were recruiting.

And just to clarify I am just having a little joke around and don't mean anything badly. I am sure LINE is super fun - like Band Camp!

I remember lurking at these boards when people were talking about LCap, Switch and fisting Busters and I googled "Marvel Puzzle Quest does it make any sense?" and various other searches and never really got a clear answer. So I should really by now know that if a player asks me if I want to Pop the Squirrel in s.2 at 4pm that it isn't code for anything sinister.
