5/5/3 is likely the "I ain't using him in PvP anymore, but I'm going to optimise him for PvE" build.
NO!!!
Your assumptions are predicated on X-Force, sure he destroys everything but what are you gaining from a 5/3/5 build over a 5/5/3 build? You get an extra 210 damage on a strike tile, if you Surgical Strike, it just does 210 more damage, if you X-Force it does 210 more damage, but here's the trade off, you have complete **** World Rupture, it is now useless because World Rupture not at 5 is really bad, so now you can't take him into PvE and really how often are you going to be running Sentry in PvP? here's the other issue, most top tier's are going to have X-Force/4hor/Sentry in this PvP. I always target X-Force first, but because Sentry is buffed red is going to be the color stolen, and if I down Sentry, 4hor is left and I still steal red, so that means unless I am running Hood, any and all green they have is going to be remaining and that means World Rupture will be going off and you are going to get more defensive wins and be more of a deterrant if your World Rupture is maxed, because more than likely Sentry will be the last target and even if X-Force uses X-Force tiles will remaining from a World Rupture and if he gets a sacrfice tile out on you look out, irregardless, yes 5/3/5 plays better in PvP, but only slightly, and the slight betterness it gains you isn't worth the tradeoff of completely destroying the character in every other enviornment.
On another note, in Starfall, Surgical Strike into Supernova would actually work decently. SS empties AI's red AP AND red tiles on board, so you still get the benefit of base Supernova damage (2310 to each character) to the team. If there is no more red tiles, no self-damage. Cascades from SS might bring in a few more red tiles, but self-damage from those few red tiles is gonna be far less than what was already on board. Only kink is turn-ending. But hopefully the game would have ended too.
I never thought of using Supernova after for no team damage, that's actually not a bad idea. Playing this PvP I see the benefits of 5/3/5 for sure, as many have said X-Force has negated the existence of any other green but like you and I have both said and the logic build for us is 5/5/3. Supernova is now the better skill so it makes no sense not to max and if I'm not going to use his green in PvP wether or not I have it at 3 or 5 it doesn't matter, so then it comes down to the simple question which will dictate the 5/3/5 or 5/5/3 build, would you rather have a terrible World Rupture but awesome Sacrifice or an average Sacrfice and an average World Rupture? Having Sentry 5/5/3 allows me to play him in PvE as well as PvP where as 5/3/5 would only let me play him in PvP. I really think people are overlooking the strength of WR, yes it was gutted and is all but useless unless you boost and run Hood 3/5/5 but that doesn't mean it still cant kick out 3500 AoE in PvE which is what I'm okay with0 -
I ended up making the switch to 5/3/5 after some game play with him boosted in Starfall. As was said, running with XForce, Sentry just doesn't make sense with 5 Green. My other high level character is LThor, and CotS is easier to use there as well.
Ultimately what it came down to is I couldn't really find a team where I'd definitively use World Rupture. There might be a balance in the way I use him at 5/4/4, but intentionally gimping both seems like the wrong answer.0 -
Edit: double post0

I'm keeping WR at 5. You have to do a ton of work to get rid of the tiles even with a 3 turn countdown, and if he's paired with someone like BP or Daken there will be tiles around to make it worth it, even if only 5-8 go off.0

Sentry has completely come out of my rotation in favor of Ldaken, Thor, Hulk and Human Torch.
But if everyone is downed, I can put Sentry in just to be a meat shield; which works kind of well.
His red and yellow are still decent uses of AP though, so at least there's that.0 -
That's why I have him 5/5/3 since it plays better for PvE, you can still get some really good WR combos with Blade/Daken/BP and he does obliterate the board, generate AP and well, just kill people.0

You can argue nobody else should ever have 5 in green because X Force exists. Beyond that, all his abilities are quite balanced relative to each other. Whatever you don't have 5 in is usually the ability you wish you had 5 in when you're using him as long as X Force isn't around. In the Sentry event I wish I had 5 in Supernova instead of 3, but I did see quite a few opportunities to use World Rupture even though it turned out to be unnecessary because I had X Force too. Sacrifice is still quite good though it seems to have the opposite effect as whenever I use it, it tends to get matched right away and made me wish I didn't have 5 in it.0

The game became a little more balanced with the nerfing of Sentry, now even fat thor ou xforce take a lot more time to win a pvp and that is exactly why I cant be playing the game as it should be (in a strong alliance) .
I always have to work, travel or simply do real life stuff, with sentry I could get 300-400 points in literally 10 to 15 minutes, now it takes 2x that ammount of time, the game as simply became inviable to be played for someone like me ...
I will have to say that it was maybe a good step in the direction of making people play more, but for me it was the end of the fun, I just cant stand playing for one whole hour to do simply 700 points. If i had a full level xforce it would take less, but still more time that with sentry, so I will leave one suggestion, make matches faster, some people really cant play as long as you want0 -
So my sentry is currently 4-5-4...should i respec him to 5-5-3 or 5-4-4 if I get the red sentry from finishing thunderbolts mountain?0
-
So because you now actually have to play the game, you want to stop playing the game.

When 2* characters were the norm, they nerfed Wolverine and Thor. They used to be mega. I sold Thor and never looked back. Selling him meant buying cover slots and allowing me to broaden my roster.
And so similarly I sold Sentry. Sure, I miss some event-specific fights, but it allowed me to further grow my roster. It also allowed me to comprehensively level Daredevil, whose tournament will no doubt yield an Elektra.
Time or Money, man. Choose one. I like the game. I'll continue to play. Some characters get nerfed. QQ.0 -

Or, you could drop from a top 100 alliance, where time constrained people don't belong, and play in a lower ranked allieance because you enjoyed the game.
I know, madness.0 -

I think a lot of people want to join a 'hardcore but still forgiving' top 100 alliance without realizing there's no such thing as a forgiving top 100 alliance unless you're an Internet celebrity.0 -

Play in shifts. Join a bracket that's not heavy normally. Climb to about 600 if you have a good team, sit there unshielded overnight. Come back later and push for 900+. That's how I became a slacker able to still get top 25.0
