It's just weird for me to see, because for years the conventional wisdom among the player base was along the lines of:

We don't ever want to see the devs add any new 3★ characters to the game. That will dilute the 3★ character pool even further and make the game more of a slog. New players should just roster every 2★ & 3★ character as quickly as possible so that they can get their productive resource farms up & running, but the goal is basically to reach the 4★ tier ASAP (within a few months?) because that's where the game really begins and gets interesting!

And now everyone seems to be ret-conning the logic to:

Finally we're adding new 2★ to the game! This is exactly what new players need, and it's what we've all spent years begging for! This solves so many complaints that we've had about the game!

They've been adding new 3★ characters for a while now, so you get interesting characters / powers / synergies there. I always just thought the 1★ & 2★ tiers served as a sort of extended tutorial to ease you into the game mechanics. But you should get through it as quickly as possible - it's not a place that players should be spending even more time in.

If we are going to see even 3* levels of dilution in the game, I hope that 2* characters are going to be favoritable.

Fair points. But I think it's important to remember that while a lot of the playerbase fits into the style of getting as far as possible as quickly as possible, there are a lot of casual players that won't step into forums/discord/etc because they just want to play with fun characters.

I appreciate that we've already been given communication that this is likely to take the place of a existing release (and I would have to imagine it would only be replacing a 4star, not that we'd miss it), and that we'll only see a couple this year.

I see it as a way to grow an app/game with no ads. This is a creative way to cater to all facets of the playerbase, not just the high end/endgame players.

We see time and time again that the vocal players want more/new content, but get upset when it's not what they explicitly asked for (e.g.: pretty much every non-mainstream character). This is one of those cases where the devs are taking a risk to see how something plays out, and I like that it's addressing some issues with how this new character is being rolled out.

    Whaaaaaat?!?

This was something I never would have guessed would have happened. A new 2★ and my favorite Marvel character to boot.

Speaking for myself, I like it. The tier is pretty stale and this adds some interest to it. It does mean that it might be hard to get him for his PVP (will he get a PVP? 2★s usually don't, though I think Ms Marvel and Human Torch did when they introduced them,) but whatever. Guess I'm hoarding Elites and Heroics until they tell us when he's in...

Still, at least they didn't introduce a second Nightcrawler to the 4★ tier. Having more than one copy of a character in a tier is, IMHO, very stale. Particularly if that's the only copy of the character in the game.

I like the idea of a new 2* because newish players can have a favorite that started around the same time they did. They don't have to play with the characters that are old news to the rest of us.

Everyone saying "more twos help new players" but I don't see how.

The more twos you have, the harder it is to get specific ones. Making the tier bigger means it's harder for new starters to get certain characters.

    Character wise, art is cool.

New 2 star characters should come with a free roster slot, change my mind.

We all have something important to bring to this discussion, but i think going forward, what you should bring is silence

You could use that argument for any character going forward regardless of tier

So wait, no 4star this week either?

    Oh.

    Do we get 2* PvP?

The thing that is interesting for me is that they can also change up the 3/5* release too. So perhaps a 4/5 Sentry or Psylocke.

Chiming in: there is no current plan to change the release cadence. Rather, on occasion if we see opportunities to insert characters of lower tier than the norm (3,4,5) we will. You can expect to see 1 or 2 more 2*s later this year, but that's it.

Sorry @DevpoolMPQ_BCS I’m still a bit confused. Your response makes it sound like this is an extra character and we’ll still get the “regular” new 4* character this Thursday. Is that true… or is Nightcrawler replacing that release (which reinforces your “no change to the release cadence” answer, meaning we’ll only get one new character every 2 weeks but it won’t always be a 4/5/4/5/etc…)? EDIT: (And I realize the week with a 5 release also gets the 3 at the same time).

I think this is awesome. With ascension now in play, new 2* create a benefit for newer players and older players.

I think they've held off on it for so long because the 2* tier was irrelevant to all but the newest of new players, and it's not that way anymore at all.

    This is great.

I would like to see the both 1s and 2s show up.

But, I would like them in place of a new 3 every month. So if there is 1 new 1 a year and 2 new 2s, then there should be only 9 3s.

I'm not a fan of cramming in more characters to an already fat release schedule after adding an extra 3 every month.

    Next wave of counter-arguments:

New & Casual players are going to love this!

They're unhappy with the 14 current 2★ roster and were going to quit, but because of Nightcrawler the 15th character they'll keep playing? There's a lot of players who are happy staying in the 2★ tier even longer (or indefinitely?) and don't want to progress to 3★ or above any sooner?

It's going to revitalize interest in the 2★ tier!

Are there a lot of 4★ / 5★ players who now play most of their matches with the revitalized, newer 3★ release characters? Personally I roster, champ, and ascend all the new 3★ characters, but I don't play them unless they're required. Even then, the 3★ sits in the back while my 5★ characters with 10x damage & 10x health do all the work. If we're not using 3★ characters, isn't a 2★ going to be even worse?

I like releasing a 2★ because I think it will interrupt or slow down the existing release schedule which I dislike: new 3★ & 5★, two weeks later a new 4★

It doesn't really solve that problem though - the devs apparently said 2★ will be rare and infrequent (for now?) And if you dislike the current release schedule, then it can just be modified or slowed down separately.

    • Maybe new characters should come every 3 or 4 weeks, not 2?
    • Maybe it should be a 3★, two weeks later a 4 star, two weeks later a 5★, two weeks later a different 3★ (so there's one new character at each tier every 6 weeks, not 4)?
    • Maybe 4★ & 5★ rewards should be more generous to account for the existing dilution with ~250x 4-5★ characters already in the game?

But randomly sprinkling in 2★ characters doesn't really fix anything about those larger, ongoing problems...

New 2★ are fun because they're a new 2★ and not one of the boring old 2★ that we're already used to!

But after 76-126 covers, 2★ Nightcrawler is just going to be Ascended 3★ Nightcrawler for most of us. So... why bother to release him as a 2★ at all? In a few weeks, he's just going to be a 3★ that cannot be upgraded using shards or be favorited or feed a 4★ character with champ rewards. So why not just release him as a new 3★ without any of those drawbacks?

Is diluting the 2★ Ascension rate the devs' implicit goal - they just won't come out and admit that?

I don't mind the 2*. It helps the new players. They do want to grow the game and retain them, so it helps with their business plan.

    @KGB said:
2 star releases are going to be excellent news for those players in a HP / roster slot crunch since you don't need a 2 star to do CL10 so you can safely ignore this character giving you more time gather HP for the next 4 or 3/5 release.

I don't understand why new 2★ characters would be good for new or old players. For new players it's just going to be another delay before you move on to the 3★ tier (unless you think his powers make him a total game-changer among 2★ characters?) For older players, it's just 1-4 additional roster slots you have to set aside while you Ascend a character you never use so that you're not "wasting" the covers you earn for them. Everyone is going to suffer from dilution - getting these characters to high levels more slowly, and earning the best Champ & Ascension rewards less often.

If you claim that adding new 2★ characters is good for all players, then aren't you also arguing that the game would be even better if there were hundreds of characters in both the 1★ and 2★ tiers?

As someone with a second new account, I know it helps me and people in a new alliance I joined a month ago. Maybe you should delete your account and start over and find out if it's helpful for you when you start over?
