Man... got a slow start on this Hunt event because I was out of town and couldn't play much and it is REALLY hard to catch up to decent scores now

Yeah, I'm finding that to be true for me as well. I didn't really play the PvE that much before since I was in a 5 man alliance and the chances or getting anything out of it (read: none) wasn't worth the time involved. I'd just play the easy - medium once to get the first time bonus then not play them again. Now that I have a reason to play them I've scored around 10k on the past few and been just outside the top 10 but I'm still waaaaay down the list near the bottom for the Alliance. icon_cry.gif

So adamLmpq, if you feel someone right behind you pushing you some, that would be me trying to climb ahead of you on the ladder. icon_e_wink.gif

Im still at work. I missed the end of one of the subs (again. It kills me that they end while im at work) and im seriously jeopardizing the chance of getting top 20 on the main hunt event. I guess i'll have to grind to 1 every node this weekend.
I shielded yesterday on the GSBW event with about 800 pts, at 2nd place, but with my luck i'll been pushed out from the top 10 when i get back home.

This seasons ranking is getting on my nerves too. I cannot miss the 10-pack. The collectionist in me wont let it happen.

    How is everybody doing?
  • Pfffftttt.... You would be surprised.

I am shielded at 842? I think around there.

Have not been hit once and still in first in my bracket by a long shot... So... either the grind is going to happen tonight, or... The Hunt savage Lands is going to take over... Who knows.

I barely hit 2 or 3 nodes in that Sub for now. Gonn have to hit it hard later and have not touched the other sub event, Alaska? Yet.

Still sitting in 2nd place in my main, back by about 1500 points and up by 4K on third. Boy, oh boy, they gonna find it bad when I actually start collecting some points there today/tonight.
  • Don't worry adam, we're in good position to win a Falcon cover. Any contribution to secure our top 100 finish would be great.

We're doing well in Hollowpoint Kiss. I haven't made my charge yet. Hoping to get to 800, though I might not make it that far.

RWTD and Berk's contributions are big, but ya know... call me crazy... but I kinda miss being a fringe 100 team. Oh, the intensity of fighting for that Torch cover

Earlier in the thread, there was a question regarding our best placement. DD replied that he didn't keep track but we're Top 100 finishers. What bugged me was that I'm almost certain we had a Top 50 finish somewhere in there. I remember seeing 100 HP from alliance rewards some time... I think I remember now though. I'm almost certain it was the Dark Avengers tourney where we got Top 50

I'll make sure to stop trying then. Also I'll make an extra effort to find and hit RWTD so we cancel each other out. Then the rest of you can have the suspense of hanging at around the 100 border mark icon_razz.gif

Let's get excited about finishing close to top 50. Maybe get that extra 500 ISO - Oh wait - that's not really worth anything...

I'm glad I could make a difference. If you find me TOO helpful I can apply to one of the 5 Deadly something sub-alliances icon_razz.gif

    Or not, hate their image.

Its about the things we've been talking about in the alliance, about burning out, about the pressure and about the casual side of the CBStare. I think the guy who wrote it is right, alliances do put a lot more pressure in players by putting some rewards out of their reach if they dont join or if they dont perform. The most prominent example should be Nick Fury, an alliance-only reward.
From the start, DecoyDuck wanted this alliance to be fun to play, stress free, but without noticing, the game mechanics pushed for a more competitive, always online, side of the players. Now if you skip A DAY everyone in your alliance will now, they wont get their daily ISO.
I really dont like that. This is a game, and should be enjoyed like that.
If someone doesnt play for a week, it should be ok. Should. Personally i value more interaction in the chat and forum than performance.

So, the question is, does anyone have an idea how can we cope with that? How to avoid the pitfalls you can see other alliances are falling into because of this system? One of the carebears has a giant heart in his belly, thats our flag icon_razz.gif
With the new members we are doing alright, we were top 100 comfortably (top 10 in savage land!) so no more 98th last minute positions for us i guess...

But i'd love to hear everyone's opinion about the matter. Maybe im the odd man out.
  • We're placing in the top 100 pretty regularly, and higher sometimes (we managed a top 10 in a sub recently, I think). I don't think we have anything to worry about. I think, for me anyway, I feel less pressure than I would if we were in, say SHIELD, and the prize difference between top 10 and top 100 really isn't that high. I'd rather be here than in SHIELD, because I can get 750 in a PVP and not screw things up for everyone else.

I think as long as we emphasize communication, we'll stay fine. We do well. There have been a few incidents where someone drops out of sight for a week or so, and communication is the key to avoiding hard feelings about that.

Having some discussions and opinions about casual/competitive and burn out while the alliance is performing well seems like the right time to do it. When our performance is borderline, then feelings can get reactionary. Torches and pitchforks!

Winning is intoxicating! Losing is a drag! Fortunately for us, we've never had a rage session if we didn't place as high as we wanted. I hope that speaks to the attitudes of anyone who was willing to join a group with 'Care Bear' in its name.

Some of the competitive nature is my responsibility. I want the members who score high to feel that they're contributing to a goal that can be attained, and at the same time, not feel as if they have to carry the entire group on their own. So I market our alliance as top100. That attracts higher level performers to share the load. High level performers tend to play a bit more competitively. Everyone is pushing each other and no one wants to let the rest of the team down. The performance ratchets up.

What if our performance were declining? What if we started becoming a top250 or top500 group? Not because we're getting worse, but cause other alliances are getting better. Some of you might need to move on to more competitive alliances and that would be understandable. If we were #105 in Nick Fury with 2 minute to go and you got an invitation to join a top50, would you take it? This is a game. Most, though not all, people play to win. The spiral continues and we would have a more difficult time recruiting high level players and our rank (in this hypothetical scenario) will reflect that.

One of the benefits of being in a large alliance is that it spreads out our risk and play styles. We've been a 19-person alliance the last 2 weeks cause of Mr. Panduras' super super super long vacation and we have a variety of scores. We've still been able to place where we wanted to. A percentage of us who wish to play competitively can (and will) do so while a bit more casual play will still contribute to the overall goals. Hopefully, we can agree to support this model. I've communicated with some of you regarding alliance imbalance and I think we can do very well with a certain % competitive, a certain % casual, and a certain % "evolving". The challenge is finding the right mix of those percentages.

Come to think of it, Panduras' long absence (he'll be back May 5, I think) is a good test for us. Not it terms of our scores, but in terms of our attitudes. It means that at any time, one or two of us can take a break or back off on our play styles (temporarily? permanently?) and our alliance can still enjoy success.

So I'll let you in on my super-secret, unscientific recruitment method. I look for interesting people. Unless you're volunteering the info, I don't ask for rosters or pve scores or how many times you hit top10 in pvp. I look for people who align with our CareBearStare attitude (whatever that is). I look for people who engage the forums. I look for people who have strong opinions about alliances. I look for people who love communicating. Do you guys recall this eduhiga1 in our chatline who wanted to join? Big ballin' scores and monster roster. Number 1 everything. I was tempted. But he wouldn't send me a pm. I couldn't communicate with him and that might mean he wouldn't communicate with the rest of us.

Aside from encouraging our quieter alliance members to communicate every now and again, there's no plans to change the alliance (don't worry all). Play, communicate, contribute, encourage.

Small recap for those who are clicking through their rewards too quickly... Top10 in Savage subevent. Top100 in Hollowpoint Kiss. Amazing work all! Build up those Lazy Thors, his time will come soon...
  • Out of curiosity. What caliber player is our vacationing BroBear? JUST curious how many points he might have contributed had he been here.

I had a look at the members contribution for the hunt and I'd say we have 10-12 hardcore players and a few casual daily guys and we're currently 64th.

I almost think that if we all stopped playing today then we might still be ok for top 100. It's very impressive and as a new guy to the alliance it feels really balanced.

Regarding the issue of what might happen if we miss out on top 100 down the road; maybe our alliance should do a Poll Thread before each PvE just to ask member how much the predict to contribute. Summer is coming up so people will be away from time to time and it's always good to know prior to an event if a number of people are going to be away because then you can decide if it's worth making an effort or if it's better to skip one event and "relax" for a week.

At the very least it would be really appreciated and respectful towards the rest of the alliance if people could give a heads up when they know that they can't be active during a week.

Speaking for MYSELF regarding the shield seasons I'm going to keep my expectations relatively low. If I don't win Nick Fury then it's not the biggest loss because the time it would take to get his cover will take a long time. If people really want his covers then I believe you are better off trying to finish first in PvP and rely on your own abilities and time commitment. I assume they will roll him out as a PvP reward just like X-force and IW.

With regards to the current HUNT event I think it has stagnated severely. I woke up this morning and I had the exact same placement as last night. My bracket doesn't seem to be moving much anymore. I'm even considering not waking up at 4 am on Monday morning as rubberbanding seems to be eliminated a little by the sheer amount of subevents that we've had this week.

    Please don't hit me, that's what's my wife's job. icon_e_wink.gif

There will be times where I won't be able to contribute nearly as much. My job is almost always feast or famine. I'll go from nothing to do to a project that takes up 60-80 hours a week. Thankfully those aren't too often. I'll let people know if there is a time frame that I won't be playing much.
  • I basically have two modes when I'm playing video games:
    1) super casual I dunno **** is going on (I'm like this when I play fighting games) mode
    2) intense, competitive all-out mode

If I'm not giving this game my all, then I'm not playing this game at all. Escaping with narrow victories or suffering narrow losses is intense, but I live for the intensity. The alliance structure doesn't change the way I play that much. I may shoot for the extra 20 points here and there if we're sitting at 102 or something, but overall, if I'm trying, I'm trying.

It's OK, I'll just wait for Tonzil to unshield and then hit his laaaame roster. 101 !!!!!

As all the other alliances continue to ramp up and optimize and reorganize, we may certainly find ourselves back in that position sooner than we'd like! icon_lol.gif
