Please note, I am looking for a maintainer of this all important list; someone to love and care for it. Requires a careful eye, good compliation skills, time and patience. Send me a private message if you are interested!

***

There are approximately 60 characters in the game and particularly when you are moving into collecting your 3* characters it can get confusing as to who to put with who.

This guide will help you use more of the breadth and depth of your roster - pick a character and you can find some other characters with whom they match well and regardless of what the state of your roster is, you can find some new and interesting combinations to play and experiement with. Looking at an opposing team and have no idea where to start? Try this thread that has some suggested counters to a variety of characters.

These are not in any particular order (except loosely alphabetical) and it is assumed that each character is at reasonably usable level and that some may work better with certain cover levels (discussion found elsewhere). I've also combined identically skilled characters (as only their different numbers differ). Overall, you will need to use your own judgment about the suitability and sustainability of character use within your own roster.

Your contributions and updates are most welcome (just the "best" combinations please, not every single possible variation)!

  • OBW is good with a lot of characters -> probably ends up being the best with a lot of characters, although they might be only mediocre for her. Similarly for Daken.

2* Ares and 2*Wolverine? That's Pure GRY overlap, mostly a waste.

    2*/3* Daken + 2*/3* Wolverine.

    1* Hawkeye and ... 1* Storm?

2* Hawkeye works decently with 2* Thor. Covers all but black, and Thor's Yellow sets up match-5 opportunities. Since you're probably running a 3/5/5 Thor, Hawkeye's Red can be better anyways.

1* Juggernaut and OBW. OBW steals AP for juggernaut, and heals his self-inflicted wounds. 1* Venom might also work, stuns with small green generation.

2* Spiderman and the sell button.

2* Wolverine and Storm? Is this just for strike + hailstorm? Storm's board clearing abilities don't work well with Wolverine's strike tiles. Johnny Torch seems more appropriate for that combo.
    Also, Daken.

Actually they work pretty well together. The only overlap is Green color which usually you will pick Ares green because of the damage. For the red Wolvie wins because of his tremendous damage. And yellow is a win/win situation because while it charges Sunder it also provides health for Wolvie if he is below his 50%. I have personally tried this combo and I have to say it works very good and it will not go down easy on defense either.

While both of them are good characters in their own respects, the synergy doesn't seem that great.
    1. You sacrifice 2 active powers.
    2. You may need to over-prioritize yellow collection which leaves Wolverine vulnerable to not having any matches when you need it.

Due to Wolverine's low hp, the enemy will target Ares first, then save a killing technique for Wolverine to totally negate his healing ability/potential. They only have to first deny green, then deny red. It's debatable whether this is as strong as Ares/Thor.

Hoods black with Human Torch green.
MN Mags purple with Steve Rogers blue.
Spidey blue with Venom purple = Venom black.

In the time it takes to deny/kill Ares, you can often find yourself facing Adamantium Slash, because it's not always possible to completely deny green/red at the same time. Even if you do, then you usually get smashed with Sunder. So Ares/Wolverine you often need to deny all 3 colors, whereas Ares/Thor, denying green/yellow is usually enough. Even if they gather red, neither hits very hard with it.

Wolverine is often underestimated. In my own experience, he's one of the characters I wipe against most (anecdotal evidence for now). Doesn't take much for things to go horribly wrong when he can spam strike tiles/damage at 6AP a pop.

Exactly! I almost always skip max level Wolvie/Ares combo. They are just too risky to take down. You might take them down easy with the help of a lucky board, but if you are a bit slower than you need to be, you might lose. But even if you don't lose the game it takes one Sunder or one Adamandium Slash to say bye bye to one health pack.
  • Some possible additions to "the list":

I don't really want to list these cause they're surprisingly effective and I don't want to run into them icon_e_biggrin.gif

    2*/3* Human Torch and:
    + Black Panther + Patch
(Depending on placement, they both tank for Torch [apart from red] and Panther's beefy strike tiles are great for Torch)

    4* Wolverine and:
    + 3* Daken + Falcon
(No use for red but X-Force is a good outlet for both passive abilities)

GSBW pairs well with Black Panther & Punisher. Punisher matches Black, Red, Green. Panther matches Blue & Yellow. That leaves Widow to only match Purple. You get full colors, BP uses Black, Yellow, & Blue, Widow uses Green & Purple, and Red becomes circumstantial between letting Widow use it to eliminate out of the way special tiles or Punisher finishing them off.

I'm sure a lot of you noticed, Punisher is really only there as meat shield. Sure there are tankier characters, but Punisher covers the most relevant covers you should be prioritizing with these 3.

Though honestly any Purple user can pair well with BP & Punisher. Falcon is nice since you've not got 2 ways to make defense or strike tiles, 1 way to make attack tiles, every yellow match boosts those that are out.

star.pngstar.pngstar.pngicon_blackwidow.png : I haven't tried this due to not having a maxed Ragnarok but I think she would go well with icon_thor.png and icon_ragnarok.png. That gives you greentile.png generation in yellowflag.png , redflag.png and purpleflag.png . All 3 of them can make great use of this.

icon_bullseye.png : He goes well with star.pngstar.pngicon_magneto.png. You can line up 4 whitecrit.png more easily. You can create two whitecrit.png with Polarity Exchange ( purpleflag.png ) with 5-of-a-kinds and add 2 more with icon_bullseye.png to get the maximum damage.

star.pngstar.pngicon_captainamerica.png : Goes well with icon_moonstone.png . Especially against goons ands enemies with countdown abilities. Sometimes both of them are buffed in PvEs. They only need a greentile.png user to complete the rainbow.

icon_ares.png : He also teams up nicely with icon_moonstone.png . You get two stronger offensive abilities in purpletile.png and redtile.png unless your enemy is producing lots of special tiles. In that case her purpletile.png power is mostly diminished. You'll need a bluetile.png user if you want to complete the rainbow. For example icon_doctordoom.png

star.pngicon_hawkeye.png : With icon_bullseye.png due to him being able to create whitecrit.png tiles.

    star.pngstar.pngicon_hawkeye.png : With star.pngstar.pngicon_magneto.png and icon_hood.png . icon_hood.png 's Intimidation ( blackflag.png ) reduces countdown timers. icon_magneto.png is used to create 5-of-a-kinds.

icon_punisher.png and star.pngstar.pngicon_blackwidow.png : She double dips in strike tiles with her passive Espionage ( blackflag.png ).

star.png and star.pngstar.pngstar.pngicon_storm.png with icon_thor.png : Good against goon fights. You can get more than enough yellowtile.png using icon_storm.png 's Lightning Strike ( greenflag.png ) to fill the board with greentile.png with icon_thor.png

You have BP to tank for Hood and Hood steals the AP you need to hit battle plan, followed by Rage of the Panther, and Sniper rifle.
Since Hood Steals so much AP I can ususally get 3 matches out of them before I need a health pack and the Health pack is never for Hood so I can use him with someone else.

    Comments:

    a. Some of the team combo synergies are not self-evident. The strategy in Daredevil, Magneto Marvel Now for example may not be obvious, in that you use Polarity Shift to create match 4's for the AI to trigger Daredevil's traps, since the AI always makes match 4’s. Some acronyms can be added to this list over time, such as STS=Strike Tile Strategy, or shorthand comments like IM40 Yellow->Lcap Red (IM40 Feeds Lazy Cap Red), or Hulk(Hood) for Hulk tanks for The Hood.

    b. I didn't verify all these combinations personally. Some of them I'm sure are good. I pulled some of them from the character specific pages in the Character Discussion part of the forum. Specifically posts where the poster commented that that specific team combination was very effective in a PVP, the Simulator, or an event such as the Gauntlet. Others, I gathered from the Events pages.

    c. Redundancy: A team combination of Classic Storm, Lazy Daken, and Patch would ideally exist 3 times in the list -- once under Classic Storm, another duplicate under Daken and a third under Patch. I did insert these duplicates in many cases, but certainly not in all cases. Further editing could be done to either remove the duplicates, or to make the duplication uniform for the entire list. At the moment, to find all the combinations for a specific character would require performing a "Find All" in the list since some team combinations for your character of interest may exist under a separate character that teams up well with them.

    d. The list doesn't explicitly state so, but for characters with identical 2* and 3* versions of them (i.e. Thor and Lazy Thor), either character would work in the combinations listed. In this initial draft, I tried to list 2* versions of characters if the team combos was primarily 2* chars, and the same for 3*. This means that the list would have fewer 2*/3* mixed teams, but such combinations are certainly possible and practical.

I had some time so I put together a long list of team combos from your list plus some more of my own plus many I found on various pages on the forum. (I wish I could give credit to everyone, but it was multiple dozens of sources -- credit to everyone...). Feel free to add or rework this.

I theoretically tend my offer of resignation.

That is astonishing. Well done. I feel bad even just thinking about copying directly what you have done.

Do you have a preference as to what you would like done with it (including just starting it as your own thread and I'd probably leave this one)? Also happy to merge it into what I started.

Once again, all respect to you, such a great piece of investigation.

Edit - Upon further consideration, you did say I could do what I want with it, so I guess I can. icon_razz.gif Just need to think for a little bit about merging / layout considerations...

There are way tankier characters namely Hulk exactly the same color combo as Pun and a ton of extra HP + he doesn't have an active black to interfere with Panther on Defense.

    3 star.png Loki + 3 star.png Wolverine (Patch) + Daken

Berzerker Rage with Trickery is amazing offensively and defensively. Covered out Patch gives you (6) 174 Strike Tiles and with Trickery you get (6) 174 protect tiles. If Loki is around 100, 3 star.png Daken Classic hides him so he does not take damage. Patch and Daken also heal which allows you to use less health packs once you hit the 700 wall in PvP.

Just an idea to include a Loki pairing.

    Some additional comments:

    1. I originally did this list in Excel. I couldn't find a way to paste that into text in this forum, so additional editing was needed to arrive at the final format.

Cool. My first layout attempt could do with a little prettying perhaps.

    2. I used the character names as they are written in the Characters and Skills Compendium (credit Nonce Equitaur 2). My recommendation is to keep the names in that format for consistency with the other page.

In theory, I am totally all about this and follow it a lot when I've written some of my other posts. The reason that I didn't so much in this instance is that I am expecting that people reading this will not really be new players; they'll be people well into their early rosters (likely well into levelling their 2* characters) and looking for something new and it's just easier and quicker to be able to quickly scan over something, already being familiar with the overall character. Also it massively cuts down on editing to just use a single number and name. Your list does look super pretty though, perhaps there is a middle ground somewhere.

    3. The vision is for a living document that is accurate, comprehensive, and enduring. It'd be great if it could be put into some sandbox/wiki type environment -- maybe google docs? -- but barring that, someone would need to manage it. It'd be nice is several people could manage it, but not sure that's feasible.

What this really needs is a check the box / selection a menu option scroll list, more interactive type thing, but plain text is our only option here. You could do a google doc type thing but it's just going to be easier for people to read it here.

Perhaps acronyms could be developed, such as STS=Strike Tile Strategy, or IM40 Yellow->Lcap Red (IM40 Feeds Lazy Cap Red), or Hulk(Hood) for Hulk buffs for The Hood. I didn't arrive at a conclusion or preference on how to do this, but I did have comments in the original excel version. It's just that the text is too long and wraps around complicating the formatting.

I thought about this very briefly, but not much to say at the moment. I was just trying to keep it simple and felt like explaining every combo was just not worth the effort and people would just try and experiment for themselves with the suggestions. Your acronym idea is interesting though. eg. 2* Magento purpleflag.png triggers Daredevil trap.png .

An interesting side note here is when one person suggests a combo with one set of 3 and then another person suggests 2 of those 3 characters and then a seperate third with a totally different justification. I have visually put them together, but their reasoning is not connected at all.

Ideally, again, a comprehensive document would include a reference to the source, or perhaps community endorsements so the better combos become emergent over time. Others, I took from the Events pages.

Again, not much else to say about this but seems like a lot of work. There must be hundreds of suggestions all over the place and given the number of events and sub-events, it just doesn't seem with it. I just take the combination at its' word and the fact that someone typed it indicates a probable use in some way and assume people will just add and suggest things as they see fit. A sort of middle ground would be to select the "top suggestions" from the list and go, "Ok, in PvP, here are some of the top suggestions" and make a small list but this is meant to be more character based than event. An alternative might be, within each character, to say, "here are the top couple of teams" and "here are some other suggestions you can try" or "here are some full complete teams, just use them" and "here are some groupings to try but use with caution" or "the best threesome" and "the best twosome". This is more how I would see it and would actually be a good idea once the list was more complete and you could rate each grouping.

This is where the shortened form of editing comes in handy and trying to combine things where you logically can, eg. there is a Falcon and A or B or C or D or E somewhere. Yes, it doesn't look as nice, but I am thinking that people will just likely scan over this document and quickly look over a line of suggestions. Other than that, it's just making sure you get all 3 combos - no easy way out there if you want to do it properly.

This was something I did on purpose. I took this approach to try and break down the artificial barriers between the rankings and promote cross-ranked teams. I also put the duplicates together to save time and space and as long as the relevant character is levelled enough you could maybe try them with others in a game.

A main reason I started this list was that I have just levelled up (though not very high) a bunch of some of my more covered 3* characters and I wanted to actually make an effort to try and see how they work - I can't field 3* teams yet, but I can field 2* teams with a trial 3* in it (or maybe for low level enemies, 2 3*'s), so I wanted to know who I could use with who. Another reason is that I have close to the entire collection of 2* characters maxed and wanted to try and get more use of the lesser used ones.
