From what I remember of the lighting round, to score high, you usually need a decent level for the featured character. It took me about 3 months of playing this game, starting last November, before I was able to finally score high in a lightning round and win a 3* cover. There's no way I'd be competitve in this game (without paying $$$) if I didn't score my Magneto (red and blue) and Doom covers before the lightning rounds got nerfed. I still only have 1 Magneto purple cover and I think that was a daily reward.

Since there were no shields for the majority of the time where villians are available for covers it usually boiled down to you must have at least the featured guy leveled high (and preferably two others) do have a reasonable shot. Sure you can always try to play at odd hours or hope MMR is in your favor but it's hardly reliable. When shields become available it's more feasible to try to manuever into a position for a 3* villian cover but I think that lasted a relatively short time before the villian covers were pulled. It wasn't hard to place well in the lightning rounds if you had that hero at a respectable level but you either needed to be very lucky on heroic tokens or you need to already be doing well in LRs in the first place.

What do you consider competitive? I've been very competitive even to the point where I messed myself up into too high of a bracket for my levels of charectors without spending any money. I found I was getting behind on 1 occasion so I did drop $20 on a couple cover (yes, CMAGs, can't beat em, join em, plus I love mags in comic life anyway), but other than the 2 covers of his I bought I've recieved all of the rest from random token rewards, I'm 3/4/4, and with nerf coming wouldn't put anything more into him, but it helped me pass the point where EVERY PvP match I could have was Thor and OBW...I almost quit playing. Soo boring fighting the same 2 every single time, oh, throw in the odd ares, but I skip ares, man he can hurt. Point is, I bought 2, and got 1 from daily, but other 8 were from random draws.

I played and was competitive and had fun for months before treating myself to buying a couple covers. You just have to be smart with your HP and play enough to keep the cash flow coming.

However, now I'm at the point where I don't have any maxed out 3 stars but a few higher level and am a couple hundred k ISO short of being a big threat. So, I don't place as well since on first match on PVP I might only be facing lvl 110+. So, I agree, it can be tough, but this game is designed after all to make money.

Hard to define what is competitive now since I've lost interst in this game and play casually now. The game is now stale and an endless grind. I can still be somewhat competitive if I tried, but I don't try anymore. My progression went from slow to total atrophy once they started with alliances & seasons. I played a lot before they implemented Seasons, but once the game became ridiculously cut-throat..... and you needed to be in a large alliance to score certain covers, I knew my time was limited.

Also, once you fail to score a featured hero in PvE, you're screwed the rest of the way. So, once I failed to win a Lazy Daken cover (not that I wanted him or approved of any of the release of Lazy characters), it spelled the end of me trying to keep up with the game.

I'm on day 300 and most of my high level characters are the old guard; Spidey, Doom, Punisher, Black Widow Grey Suit, Magneto. I can do well in PvP most of the time, but it certainly doesn't last against the endless teams of maxed Sentry/Lazy Daken/Lazy Thor that I see in every PvP. When they nerf my beloved Magneto; I'll have a team of 3*'s that most people would love to smash.
