If you don't want your points and prizes I'll gladly have them instead A lot of 5* players have Gambit as their highest level character, either through luck, hoard breaking, or spending. Some also took advantage of a couple of bugs that aren’t really worth discussing here again. Some of those players may have skipped later characters because they paled in comparison to Gambit. (Or because they weren’t very good.)If Godbit becomes just one of the crowd, that means you spent lots of resources on someone that is basically now as good as someone you skipped or just barely covered. Not a good feeling. Not to mention that your team composition and who you have been running, strategically built around Gambit in some cases, is out the window and you may not be able to be as competitive now. After the rug is pulled out from under someone, quitting might be a good option.

Anyone who has been playing this game long enough should be well aware that Gambit would be nerfed sooner or later and therefore if they built their game around acquiring all the Gambit and building their roster around that character... well IMHO they have no one to blame but themselves if it falls apart. He was OP from the start, and a nerf was just a matter of time. I'm really surprised they didn't nerf him seasons ago - most likely the delay was due to all the new features they've implemented since then. They got a lot of good use out of him - hopefully he'll still be top tier but who the tinykitty knows.
The same argument can be made for any character, really. Putting your eggs all in one basket is a terrible idea for a massively multiplayer game - any character can get nerfed. TBH, MPQ is rather light on the nerfs, from what I've come to understand.
The flip side of this is that any player entering the 5* tier without Gambit will be a second-class 5* player. That is also not a good feeling, and will provoke many of them to quit the game. The rug was pulled out from them because they assumed that all 5* characters are on a relatively even keel. They are most certainly not.

Biggest problem with Gambit was his AP generation/destruction. His purple was mean but far second to that. His red was great but no problem really.
