Spending 400 jewels and a chance that you might end up with basker, yahenni, whale?
Err no thanks. I am just going to ignore that tab in the vault and pretend that it doesnt exist.
Which is also what i am gonna do with the Trials event.
So in short for most players this update has brought nothing new but instead taken away fatpacks and big boxes for something worse.0 -
Two premium packs and 3 x KLD Booster Packs opened since update. Dupe Rashmi (4th one I have pulled), and the only other rares I got were the two guaranteed bonus cards...Smugglers Copter, and Deadlock Trap. Overall I am disappointing with the changes. I know its only a few packs but the drop rate is similar (about 1 mythic and a couple rares per 14 packs with old Big Box), but I keep getting dupes of Confiscation Coup from the events and QB which was a reward rare. I get there should be a few dupes now and again with rares and mythics, but since there isn't any trading, there should almost be a limit to how many you get. I have quite a few rare cards and mythics, but it is really starting to wear on me and don't see any point in opening packs anymore. Loosing a lot of interest in the game to be honest.
Before this update it seemed there was a decent balance between the FTP and PTP players, this new system is way more geared towards PTP. Examples: less packs and lesser chances at Mythics in the booster packs and the new Jewels are vastly more available to paying players. The Big Boxes were a way for newer players to round out their Uncommons and Commons, and you have also taken away the chance at a mythic with the bonus card. Granted for the same 600 xtals you get another guaranteed rare card, but overall its 20 less cards. The incentive to get the bigger box has dissipated for me.
Also the Trials seem decent to start earning Jewels, but the 60 xtal price tag is not cool, in gold you can only recover 10 xtals at 60 ribbons and 8 Jewels doesn't seem reasonable to open an elite pack for 400 Jewels that contains more mythics than masterpiece cards. There will be other opportunities for Jewels I am sure, but at the Gold level, you would need to finish 50 Trials to even get a chance at a Masterpiece. Not to mention, you still have to pay currency in Xtals to enter (lame).
I hope you take some of this to heart from a loyal player of almost a year.0 -

This isn't a problem in the paper game. I can trade (or sell) my duplicstes. This gives you the value of the card even if it is a duplicate. It is a massive problem here though. When we get a duplicate here it is useless in every way. I can do nothing with it except turn it into useless runes. Nearly every other card game (Hearthstone, PVC Heroes, etc) has a crafting system that allows duplicates to be recycled into useful cards. Your system of duplicates amounts to a slot machine.
Sometimes you win and get a good card, sometimes you lose and get literally nothing. If I want that model I'll go to a casino, at least there when I put real money in I have the chance to get real money out.0 -
I said early on that, while I was willing to give the new update a try, I had serious misgivings. Moreso when I found out that the "small amount of crystals" for the new daily events was *60* crystals.
And now, with the release actually out, and seeing that it takes at least 1620 crystals - barring the all-too-frequent "hey, the AI just got a 60 mana cascade 3 turns in a row" nonsense butt-kicking - to get *one* card that could very well be a duplicate mythic, I'm not impressed.
And then there is the issue of the supposed "less chance of duplicates when opening packs": I bought a KLD premium pack post-update. Across the 5 packs, I got 4 duplicates. Even worse, one of the times I got a duplicate was in the *same pack* - I got Consulate Surveillance back-to-back. Is this the (paraphrasing) "overall, there is a cost reduction" thing that Cthulhu was talking about? If so, please start giving us the "less cost-effective" 14 packs for 600 crystals again, rather than the current 10 for 600.
Basically what it boils down to is: we have to spend more per card, now. Which leaves us with the horrible choice to either buy fewer packs or have less chance to join the new daily events for a opportunity to get the new masterpiece cards. And by "opportunity," I mean "gambling on getting ridiculously expensively mythics, potentially duplicates."0 -
Brigby wrote:Hey Everyone,
Here are the Release notes for the 1.10.2 update!
Masterpiece Cards
Introducing the brand new Masterpiece Cards! These elusive cards are powerful Mythics, and will help you in your climb to the top!
We’re adding a selection of Masterpiece Cards to both Kaladesh and Aether Revolt. Masterpiece Cards can be obtained through a new Elite Pack in the Vault, and can occasionally be found in Kaladesh Booster Packs.
Check out the Card Gallery here: https://d3go.com/mtgpq-card-list-masterpiece/
Mana Jewels & Elite Packs
We are also introducing a new currency to the game, called Mana Jewels. Using Mana Jewels, you can purchase the brand new Elite Pack, which offers a single card. This booster guarantees a Mythic, and has a chance of a Masterpiece card!
Every two weeks, a new selection of Mythic and Masterpiece cards will be available through the Elite Pack in the Vault. Check out the current rotation of cards by clicking the “View Cards” info button.
Mana Jewels can be acquired by participating in Events, so keep an eye out for them!
Super Packs and Premium Packs
Introducing the new Super and Premium Packs! Super Packs and Premium Packs are available for the Origins Set, the Battle for Zendikar Block, the Shadows of Innistrad Block, and the Kaladesh Block.
The Super Pack contains three Booster Packs, and the Premium Pack contains five Booster Packs. In addition, the Premium Pack contains a bonus Rare Card! These offers will replace the old Fat Pack and Big Box offers.
In addition, Booster Packs from the Kaladesh Block will now have a small chance to contain Masterpiece Cards!
Old boosters will be removed from the vault, however they will always be claimable, even after the update. Once those boosters are claimed, the category will then disappear.
Special Offers *New Update*
Short on Mana Jewels? Check out the Specials section in the Vault. We’ve updated a number of our Special Offers to include Mana Jewels!
New Events
We are also introducing new events to the game!
Trial of the Planes
The first event, the Trial of the Planes, runs every week day. The event is a brand new variation on our current events: it is a non-competitive Player vs Player event with a big twist - each node is more difficult than the previous.
Here’s the lowdown on this new event: *New Update*-
- Each day, the Trial of the Planes is centered on a mana color
- The mana color cycles each week day, with a fixed schedule (the color is the same every week day of every week, so for example Monday is always Red day)
- With the exception of the first node, you can only play with Planeswalkers that match the day’s color. (Dual-color Planeswalkers can play on both of their color’s days).
- The event consists of 4 nodes that do not refresh. The goal is to make it as far as possible!
- Each node has exactly 3 fights on it. When you win a fight on a single node, the next node is unlocked.
- Each fight is played against another player’s deck in the same tier as you are currently in.
- Each node you unlock is harder than it’s predecessor -
-
- The first node is a standard node
- The second node has your opponent become Enraged on round 5
- The third node has your opponent become Supercharged on round 5
- The fourth node has your opponent become Legendary on round 3
(
- There are no special objectives for any of these nodes. Build the strongest deck you can using your best cards and bring your strongest Planeswalkers into combat!
- Entering the event costs Mana Crystals - the cost of a single Booster Pack.
- Winning a single fight grants you a Booster Pack of the current block.
- There are no leaderboards - only progression rewards based on the amount of fights you win.
- Each tier gains different rewards. The higher your tier and the more fights you win, the more Mana Jewels you will earn.
- You can only enter the event once per day
The further you get in the Event, the more Mana Jewels you’ll win - with a bonus at higher Color Mastery tiers. Try to enter and reach as high as you can every day to get as many Mana Jewels as you can!
Planeswalker Arena
The second new event we are introducing is the Planeswalker Arena!
Every weekend, you can compete in this new PvP event. The twist here is that this event consists of three nodes, two of which are locked to specific Planeswalkers. You can play with any Planeswalker on the third node.
Make sure not to miss it - with small leaderboards of 500 players, anyone can take first place!
Legacy Events *New Update*
With the new update, we’ve taken the time to adjust some of the older Events.
Nodes of Power, Emergency Ordinances and Fate is Rarely Fair now have smaller leaderboards of 1000 players (reduced from 3000 players). With the smaller leaderboards, we’ve also rebalanced the rewards from the Events. Smaller leaderboards - more competition!
Finally, we’ve added Mana Jewels to the Revolt Against the Consulate Event. You can win Mana Jewels in progression rewards and the Coalition Leaderboard.
Changelog (Planeswalkers & Cards) *New Update*
The following two cards have been changed:-
- Gonti’s Aether Heart: Now has 3 Shield, but loses 1 Shield every time you Overload 3, in addition to giving you an extra swap
-
- This was a necessary change to the card. It is still quite powerful, and its mana cost has not changed.
-
“Overload 1: This creature gains +X/0 until the end of your turn, where X is the amount of Energized gems on the board, then remove 5 Energy from the board”.
-
- Electrostatic Pummeler became too strong under certain circumstances. Using this new mechanic instead of the old one, it can still reach very high levels of Power but shouldn’t be able to reach the amount of Power it could before.
Bug Fixes *New Update*
- Each creature you control fails to get +3/+3 when reinforcing Rishkar, Peema Renegade.
- An infinite Thopter summoning loop occurs when Sly Requisitioner triggers Mirrorpool.
UI, UX, Localization & Graphics
- The text fails to display in all caps when viewing the Battle Log button in the Pause prompt.
- A gap displays between the Chat and Quit buttons when viewing the Game Paused Menu.
- The Battle Log text displays on two lines when viewing the Battle Log button in the Pause menu.
- The Potion button graphic display cut off when viewing the Potion button.
- The damage amount size displays inconsistently when viewing damage dealt in the Battle Log.
- The Challenge artwork displays stretched when viewing the Challenge selection screen.
- Extra Reward image is missing the AER icon
- An infinite loading screen displays when proceeding to any encounter from the Nodes Screen.
- The Evergreen description boxes fail to display when tapping Evergreens.
- The timer begins on a 7 hour timer when viewing the Fate is Rarely Fair Event.
- SOI training is not correctly translated.
- The Opponent's cards erroneously display when multiple in-hand abilities activate in the Battle Log.
Progression & Rewards
- The Player Ranking Rewards fail to be received when achieving the Silver 6-25 Player Rank.
Hi Brigby,
I have a couple of questions that I didn't see covered in the notes you kindly shared:
1) Where was the note about drastically reducing the rewards in Oath of The Gatewatch?
With the new crystals requirement to unlock certain events, it feels duplicitous to simultaneously reduce crystal earning potential. It makes us think there are sinister motives (forcing players to spend more on crystals in this case) and sneaking such a change in with no prior warning is disappointing and undoes a lot of the improved communication we have seen. Did the dev team feel that we would a) not notice or b) wouldn't object because that would be wrong on both counts and silently changing this does not work in D3's favour. Was there another explanation that the devs would like to share on why it was felt these progression rewards needed to be cut so heavily?
2) Minor point to say the least but I note that the player count has also vanished from the events. Was this intentional and will this be for all events going forward?
Again, without any commentary on this we are forced to make our own conclusions with the obvious one being you don't want us to observe the steady decline in participation. I know more than one player/coalition that tracks this data and the numbers are unarguably pointing downwards. Is there an alternative reason for why this was removed that you can share?0 -

Thanks for the response brigby, much appreciated.
On the first note, just an observation that oath has no leaderboard so would be surprised if this was a driver. However, appreciate you don't have all of the information in hand to comment further.
On the second part, as a numbers person I liked seeing this and didn't feel it cluttered anything but this is an explanation so thanks.0 -

Except the OGW events dont have any kind of leaderboards.... small or big.
Cant wait to see what rebalancing have been done to the events that actually do have leaderboards.0 -
Drop rates are still garbage....with fewer cards for the same cost.
Totally garbage. Opened two of them and got nothing but the "bonus" rare...both dupes.0 -
Opened 3 or 4 300 origin crystal packs, not a single mythic and 8 rares in total
I miss big boxes already
oh did anyone noted that they've also cut montly rewards ?
used to be fatpack now only 3x pack
YAYYYYY!!!!!0 -
What I learned in this thread...
The word "rebalance" means nothing more than "give you less for more."
Congrats mtgpq team ... your game has officially become a "pay to not suck" game.0 -
I can't even express how disheartened I am with this new release. There was evidence that the developers were starting to listen to the community.
1. Recent communication with the community has been better
2. A new daily challenge was promised with exciting new rewards and no tedious objectives
3. Ability to prioritize chances of certain mythics and masterpiece cards
4. Superior drop rates
5. Smaller player pools, improving odds of reaching top tiers in events
6. Exciting new masterpiece cards were being released
And yet, the rollout has taken all of this hope, optimism, and goodwill and dashed it against the jagged rocks of greed.
GoblinPile has already lost 1 member, who was on the fence, and has now firmly quit the game. Several others seem to be right behind him unless their is an immediate change.
What did we do wrong ask the developers? Let's see how they squandered the list above:
1. If you communicate with us and get our hopes up, then dash them with horrible rewards rates, you will get a worse reaction than just not even communicating.
2. The daily challenge (while I like the format) is a total rip off. Will I trade you 50 crystals for 15 jewels and a booster? No I will not. 15 jewels is 0.035 of a mythic. I won't make the trade with you then I certainly won't play a lopsided set of games to EARN the trade. No thanks!
3. The card pool in epic packs is way too big. I might get a dupe of whale, basker, LR, Yaheeni... or I might actually get the masterpiece... Should change this to like 2 masterpeices and 2 mythics to give us a better idea of what we can get. Otherwise we will all almost certainly be subject to dupes galore. I promise it will feel bad for players to spend 27 days and between 1350 - 1620 crystals for a dupe. If these packs are that epic.. make it a guaranteed masterpiece.
4. I have no idea if drop rates have improved. If you communicate the drop rates with us then we can at least take your word for it. Instead, we have to anecdotally try to figure it out. Guess what, that's pretty well impossible. So even if you drastically improved drop rates, the community has no way of knowing that. So you get no credit.
5. You set up smaller player pools then you give us no event with the roll out. That's just blind sighted and stupid. Give us a **** or EmO or FIRF or something and show us that jewels can be obtained in other ways. Just shows that you don't understand the community, or that we might have a bad reaction to the devaluation of currency. Or maybe there will be no jewels for events... or maybe they will give 1 jewel for top 100, 2 for top 25, and 5 for top 5 (with mythic removed as a prize). Trust us, we are assuming the worst at this point.
6. Great new cards and no way to earn them except blind luck or 27 days of grinding.. Sigh.
Honestly guys, it really feels like you snatched defeat from the jaws of victory on this one. I hope you get exactly 0 people willing to purchase that ridiculous $100 pack that gets them 1.25 guaranteed mythics. What a steal! Greedy people0 -

@brigby @hibernum_jc @whoever_else
There is no mention of objectives on the new weekend PVP event -- usually this is listed in the Release Notes.
I don't see it -- does this mean there are no objectives? (The awful weekday event states this outright -- the weekend event does not).0 -
Getting rid of mythics as coalition rewards is probably going to be the final straw for some people.
If we were earning jewels that could be redeemed for guaranteed cards at a reasonable rate, it might be different.
However, grinding long events for a handful of jewels to eventually open a pack? Wow.
Goodbye carrot, hello stick.0 -
You reduced the monthly reward too?
Is there anything you didn't gouge your customers on in this update? I'm serious.0 -
Well not we know why they didn't release an event in tandem with the patch. They nerfed the competition rewards to the point of useless.
I guess I gave you guys too much credit for ever seeking victory.
You remind me of Tezzeret. It's time to Revolt Against the Consulate!0 -
Seems that maybe they are bored of developing the game now and are trying to kill it outright by making everyone quit?
If so, you are succeding.0
