Character Rankings May 2015 Edition: The Results!

HB and, to a lesser extent, Kamala, suffer from new character syndrome: anyone not a fairly experienced vet probably has very few covers for them and never sees them in PVP, and they just aren't going to rank them very highly as a result.0

#11-15 are up on the second post now.0

Wow, LazyThor in top 10 while TGT, X-Force, Fury, Daken and BP are out? Really didn't expect that.
Anyway, this is the current top 10 (once again, in no particular order):
Prof X
3*Thor
Iron fist
Luke cage
Cyclops
Cmags
Patch
Hood
LazyCap
Blade
It's a little surprising for me to see Lcap up there, he's good, but not top10-good.
I'm starting to get a strong suspect that IF may be in first place.0 -
With the way the rankings are going so far, I fully anticipate Hood to be ranked top 3, as villains have been overrated in this. I really hope we get the raw data after this. Guessing 3* Thor is #1 again; most people rate him at least 8.
The reason I don't think IF is #1 overall:
Transitioners just won't see IF. He's never in PVE. He's generally part of higher level teams which sit higher in the PVP rankings, so again not seen by transitioners. If he is seen at low levels, he's generally at a low # of covers, so not too powerful. Further, he doesn't carry a team; he generally still seen as support to a black user. 5th looks possible with 141 - 8 votes and 160 - 9 votes.0 -
My guesses which are surely wrong:
10) Professor X - 4* seem to be undervalued across the board based on rarity alone.
9) C. Mags - Solid support, works well with others
8) Lazy Cap - High number of 10s for PVE alone, but fair number of middle votes due to slowness
7) Blade - Once he gets going it's hard to stop
6) Cyclops - New hotness, covers readily available
5) Iron Fist - Strong, but needs help. The way he is talked about around here likely swayed some voters.
4) Patch - a staple for most transitional rosters
3) Luke Cage - free defense to most match damage on offense and defense, one of the best yellow skills in the game
2) Hood - EVERYONE understands the function Hood provides (either from their own roster or matched up in PVP/PVE) which likely explains the highest number of 10s
1) Lazy Thor - AI proof, everyone's got one, no major downsides
When all is said and done, probably worth looking at how the characters who were stuck in the vault forever were rated by newer players0 -

It seems like everyone says that every time this poll gets run, and every time Steve Rogers is right there up at the top.
Also we just had 9.5 days of Ultron, which was basically an event designed to showcase how freaking strong Steve Rogers is in PVE.0 -

I would agree too if this game was made only of PvE events, but sadly it's not. Steve carried me through both Ultron events, never failing me, but still there are many other characters that I put ahead of him because they're more all-around useful.0 -

Based on what I see in the people looking for alliance thread, a good number of people focus purely on PVE.0 -
Steve is also decent in PVP, just not as fast. If you aim for 11 red, you can generally down low level support a little after the first shield throw (~6-7 turns in). With the returning red AP it's only a matter of time before everyone else falls, and his blue stun and shield really helps mitigate damage. It's super satisfying to stun an enemy XForce with 11 Black AP and watch the enemy use an Intimidation instead, not to mention him being able to take out a Recovery tile without damage.
I think it's his wide range of use that keeps him up so high in the rankings.0 -
If I had to chose between making my roster consist of nothing but maxed out versions of the top 10 characters, or 11-20 I'd pick 11-20. I think there must be something wrong with this poll format.0

He's alot of people's most well covered character.
He's versatile and powerful.
He has HP.

4*Thor is wayyy to high(above Black panther? rofl) when there's weekly buffs and Kingpin/Hulkbuster outperform her, not even touching on the 3* characters that outperform her. I think she's ranked with the worst 3* right now.
Black Panther should be higher, but not by much.
X*force I'm conflicted about. It seems folks haven't fallen into the trap of "HES NERFED HE SUXXXXXXXX" because now he's a PVE specialist with a still-powerful Black. I don't know where he'll end up.
Daken is about right...Hmm.
Nick Fury, always the bridesmaid....I'd say he could be a little bit lower because of the potent 3*/4* that were ranked under him.Goobady wrote:If I had to chose between making my roster consist of nothing but maxed out versions of the top 10 characters, or 11-20 I'd pick 11-20. Nothing is wrong with the format. This is what the People's Choice Awards look like.0 -

I don't think the top 1-20 would be dramatically changed by the change in poll format. This new poll format definitely helps out the top of a tier (such as OBW or Juggs) and hurts the bottom of a tier, but I doubt someone that would give Iron Fist a 10 and Black Panther an 8 would decide to put Black Panther above Iron Fist if asked to rank the characters relative to each other.
I would like to have a ranking with a little more granularity next time (half stars or greater than 10 stars), but I used the same survey site used the last time and didn't feel like searching around. Another thing I like about rating each character individually is that you can see their value even if they may be behind many other characters. There is only ~1.5 point difference between 1st and 20th. Even though Kamala is 20th, she is still above a 7, which isn't that bad.0 -
I'm a bit surprised at 3* Cap's apparent popularity too. Don't get me wrong, I don't think he is bad. I think he's quite good, actually. But in my opinion he really isn't top tier, and by quite some margin. There are many ranked lower in this poll that I would choose for my team above him, like Black Panther and Fury, just to name two obvious choices.
My own Cap actually sat at lvl 120 until Ultron, when he got fed some . He is stuck at lvl 139 now, because - like I just said - there are plenty I would choose for my team before I use him (and I have 18 3* characters at 166 currently).
His obvious strength is that he is more or less "self-sustaining", and that his CD tiles can be used to overwrite enemy special tiles. His weakness, however, is that his abilities are pretty expensive and he therefore takes a little while to get started, which doesn't make him much of a deterrent on defence. Just use Hood and leaving him for last is pretty safe, actually. Moreover, the AI tends to match his own CD tiles away or at least to place them so you can get rid of them. And let's be honest, who actually uses his yellow power? At 3 yellow (which is the build commonly agreed on) you can't even overwrite enemy special tiles, and it's so expensive that I often don't collect enough yellow during an entire match.
I get the feeling that his popularity in polls has something to do with the popularity of the comic book character.0 -

Lmao. Hilarious results.
Italicized characters who are much higher than they deserve, bolded those who fall lower than they deserve.
I'm seeing a trend of the better 4 Stars being criminally underranked, and I think several factors play into this.
1. Inexperience. People who don't use them and don't play against them don't have a good idea of what they do.
2. Some people are sour about the changes and are voting them low just because they see 4 Stars as a whole as being no longer worth it.
3. Some people are factoring in investment and weighing it against payoff, rather than just evalutating the value of one character against another.0 -
Caps popularity could be down to the recent buffs to health.we all knew he was good, with one of the best reds in the game but took a long time to get started. Now he has that time (apart from his yellow which can be useful though in pve) and while I still dont class him as top tier either, theres no doubting for me he has become harder to play against.0

For the newer players, I never understood why no one has ever listed the characters ranked IN their own tiers.
Each and every ranking I tell myself that I'll do it for them, but it's really hard to do on a cell phone. lol
Would one of you charitable gents like to do this, for they very first time?0 -

I did a quick cut/paste job. Edited my post on page 1 for it so it's more visible.0 -
I hope ebolamonkey doesn't take offense to this - I really appreciate his efforts on this, and regardless of the outcome these discussions are always a lot of fun. And the results are not your fault.
But with that said...dear god this forum has gone insane. How about this - would anyone trade 5 fully maxed OBW's (#18) for a single maxed Hulkbuster? (#17)? Or Patch (top 10) for girly Thor (11)??
Who do you see more of in PvP, assuming buff independent? The top 10 or 11-20?0 -
