The current packs system is already unacceptable, but to add this caveat is to just make the entire game unacceptable.

The fact that non-dupe boosters have changed isn't surprising, and if anything it's a milder change than I was expecting. Non-dupe packs will still be worth thousands of dollars worth of crystals each, but that value (for Standard packs) will just be set locked. But I can clearly see the issue for people who paid money specifically to stockpile non-dupe packs, under the assumption they'd include THB cards. I believe those customers' reasonable expectations around those purchases won't be met unless they do. I think it would be unreasonable not to apply a grace period (effectively including THB in stockpiled Standard packs but no subsequent sets), or failing that, some kind of (fair) compensation for affected players. (I do not have any stockpiled Standard packs.) That will probably mess with D3's profit/loss forecasting and may have some real consequences for their forward plans, but the alternative is basically screwing their paying VIP customers.
Well said.
I have stockpiled packs too and having them be grandfathered in would satisfy me as a VIP member and happily accept the change going forward. Not doing so though, will leave me and many others with no choice but to cash in those packs and dupe them out for orbs, which we also cannot use because we cannot craft anything. The latter is a very good reason to cancel a VIP membership I think. That would be the same as saving up free movies from your monthly streaming service only to have them make a change and can only watch movies released the year before last and earlier.

Just adding to the chorus here.
I don’t mind them making changes going forward. I’ve defended their right to make changes to existing individual cards. However, this feels different; it’s hard to get on board with the neutering of dozens of packs that VIP users purchased, because it’s affecting us across multiple levels of currency.
For example, with Throne of Eldraine. On release date I spent my crystals and bought a lot of premium packs to eliminate as many commons/uncommons as possible. In other words, reaching critical mass. Then I spent some jewels on elite packs. After some targeted spending, then and only then do you open a small amount of hoarded packs to finish out a set.
I suspect this is the same process many others use. Sure, it felt generous—but that’s the only reason VIP was worth purchasing. We only spent those crystals and jewels because we were optimizing the packs; if we'd have known the Standard packs would only be applicable for that set, then there would have been no reason to spend that much.
Thus, by neutering the hoarded packs, VIP users are now out:
1. The amount of money they spent to accrue packs for future sets
2. The amount of crystals they spent to reach critical mass in previous sets
3. The amount of jewels they spent to reach critical mass in previous sets
That's a huge amount of lost currency/value.
