Yes but he said "buying packs", not "buying Hero Points." sounds like you can increase your rank by leveling up characters, recruiting/training characters, and buying cover packs with HP. There is already a reward for purchasing hero points and ISO with real cash, I don't see them adding a reward onto that.

It also specifically says this is the first part of the rollout, so there is more to come. Stop panicking and wait until they give the full details on what this new feature entails, and then you have free reign to tinykitty the tinykitty out of it, should you decide that it is deserving of such criticism.

Wow at the negativity towards whales and vets in this thread.

I'm sorry that my 1022 days of supporting the game both with my time and my money will give me some miniscule measure of progress over day 60+ people.

I'll trade you your scaling for those rewards.

This first version will give players Iso-8 rewards and access to different features. Players will gain XP from everyday actions like buying packs, and improving their roster by recruiting, leveling and championing characters.

Something very important is missing here.

    How about playing the game?
    Clearing nodes?
Participating in PVP and PVE events with different exp values rewarded for placements?

Buying things should already have obvious and direct rewards.

It essentially looks like a player gets XP from spending Iso and spending HP, both of which you get from gameplay.

You play the game, you get iso and HP.
You clear nodes, you get iso and HP.
You participate in PvP and PvE events, you get iso and HP.
You spend your rewards in game, you get stronger characters, and you get XP, which cascades into more rewards.

    Seems pretty reasonable to me.

Yes, you spend money, you get iso and HP, which you can use to accelerate your rank progression. That's fine. It's a freemium game, not a charity, so naturally it's designed to reward spending.

Championing and command points were already the last big features HEAVILY stacked in vets and whales favor.

They're about to introduce tiered play within the game with the SHIELD clearance rank feature, as far as I can tell. So, it doesn't matter if the features are "stacked in the vets and whales favor" - if you're entirely free to play, you'll never play against those players anyway.

I'm fine with whoever pays to keep this game going getting a boost, there'd be no game otherwise.

So on Monday they're going to evaluate all my characters and champions and give me a Shield rank, and then give me all the rewards for each of those ranks all at once?

This could very be interesting......the rank/reward for 9 champed 4s and only a couple of 3*s left to champ should be quite decent.

Interested to see how they can spread all players, from noobs to (he who shall remain nameless), within 65 levels....surely 1 level per 3/4/5* character would make sense (currently 86), but 65 levels....

Well done to the devs for implementing a scaled reward feature, let's just hope it's done well

Boo-hoo. It's not like whales don't have enough advantages already.

All I'm taking away from the shield rank system is that more Iso rewards are being added to the game. Sounds good to me.

They have jacked progression up 22k for this event, as usual they dont give a damn about new players and are making it vet only. Heaven forbid they touch brackets, this feature will be useless for non-vets or non-whales.

Progression is generally fine at lower levels, so it actually makes sense for a feature like this which increases rewards for people with higher level rosters, realistically rewards should have also had scaling applied to them to reflect the greater iso needs of those who were facing vastly tougher opponents in pve.

Any xp system is non-linear, so it won't be that tough to separate everyone out and adding a cover or level to a character will get you far less than a full shield xp rank, whereas going through the intro will get you at least one rank so that they can demonstrate the feature.

In the article they mention needing level 5 to access the full game, so I Think you'll be able to score at least that many levels from the prologue alone.

It's also quite likely that each S.H.I.E.L.D. rank will cost more XP to attain than the rank before it. The first few ranks will likely fly by as people are introduced to the full game, but it's unlikely to continue at that pace or everybody would be at rank 65 in short order.

Ugh, have a max-covered OML at Level 434 with 2 yellow covers in my rewards queue. I was planning on leveling him to 450 and champing him before they expire this weekend. There's no way I let them expire to see what XP reward I'd get from champing my first 5*, right? I'd have to assume that champing your first 5* is worth a decent amount of XP? And, I'm not close on any other 5* (yes, I know, first world MPQ problems).

Maybe CS would let me open a ticket due to a shift in the game mechanics so close to expiration of a cover?

The announcement said you will be retroactively awarded all level rewards you would have gotten on your way to your grandfathered level, so I see no reason to let the imminent launch affect leveling behaviour. If you were going to level OML, level OML.

Yeah, I was thinking about that after I posted. I guess I've been influenced by the "wait until Monday to do anything" posts I've seen. Thanks.

XP for buying packs means another pay-to-win system, right?

Not a surprise; this game has always been very aggressively monetized. I just hope that playing the game f2p results in meaningful (if slower)XP accrual.

    Two mild thoughts....

    1) Regarding a system that's "stacked towards whales": real-life casinos are heavily stacked towards whales -- that's where the term "whale" comes from, after all. But that doesn't mean that you can't enjoy a casino and what it offers if you've only got a hundred bucks in your pocket. Just keep that in mind....

    2) I like the concept behind the SHIELD rank, but I do wish it would go one further and have rewards for roster usage. Make it beneficial for the player to roster a bunch of characters and actually use them. I can think of several ways to do this, all of which have pluses and minuses.

Not a fan of this analogy... it's not as if casinos offer whales 2/1 on a blackjack instead of 3/2. It's not as if they let whales at the poker table call with a 50% discount. Everyone at a casino is playing the same game. The free stuff whales get are separate from the actual gameplay mechanics.
