So how would 3 passives be viable? Obviously it could be a support character in some capacity. But what if we get a character whose match damage scales? Maybe one of those passives scales your match damage based on your current AP... or "momentum."

He's not breaking any rules. We can't rightfully do anything do him about it. They (a.k.a. the publishing house) "frown on it". All they can really do is suggest it is a problem for them, like they did in the video.0

3 passive sounds interesting. If the passive are great, like how falcon blue and yellow ability is, it could be a great 4*.0

It could be a character that only had actives in certain situations. Like say: *red passive: Johnny Blaze form* - When Ghost Rider or an ally is dealt over 20% of his health in damage, this ability becomes: 5 red ap: Penance Stare. Ghost Rider looks into his victim's eyes, seeking vengeance. Deals 4x the damage that was dealt to Ghost Rider or his ally. Ghost Rider transforms back into Johnny Blaze.
This kinda stuff makes for way more interesting defensive characters than just protect tiles in my opinion0 -
Recall that the release info for Doom's Purple ability described it as the "first active-passive" ability. Reading between the lines, I got the impression that the devs saw active-passive as a new way forward. My thoughts and speculation on this are:
Active-passive abilities can essentially be 2 abilities for the one slot. I think this concept will be important to making a clear distinction between 3* and 4* characters - basically 4*'s get "more" stuff. If you look at the 4*'s we currently have, there's already a lot of abilities that do extra "stuff". XForce's Yellow essentially has two different modes; Fury's Yellow has a whole range of different effects depending on what you've got; Th4r's abilities are already fairly strong, and they leave behind charged tiles which further impacts the way you interact with available matches; Star-lord; etc.
Doom's purple is really maybe only worth 1.5 abilities instead of two wholly distinct abilities, but that extra .5 represents him locking out purple tiles, which we all know means he plays nice with Patch. If the active-passives do become both more frequent and mostly the abilities of 4*'s then the fact that 3* Doom gets to play with one also feels quite fitting.
So Doom was a "trial run" to see how these new abilities would work in the wild, and how we reacted. I am fairly certain we'll see many more active-passives, and they'll mostly be on 4* characters.
As for a character with 3 passives. Well, we'll need to wait for more details - they could be active-passives, but there's certainly no rule that says they're not just regular old passives. It will be interesting to see how it turns out regardless.0 -
