Dang, sorry to hear about that Nonce. You did a hell of a job.
On the bright side, you might actually be able to sleep without dreaming about spammers.0 -
Nonce, enjoy your new quality life as a contributing user, you have been a great mod but at least you don't have to fight hordes of spammers anymore (not that there won't be any, har). To this day I don't know how you managed to keep your sanity and fondness of the forums, so I salute you.0
-
I dunno, Nonce. I might bee too snarky to be a mod0
-
So, uh....are there actually any mods that still come around the forums? I can't recall the last time I saw pandabery and riggy0
-
Way to ensure no-one's going to volunteer to keep your forums usable, D3. Stripping Nonce of moderation powers for that? Not exactly improving the forumites' opinions of your decision-making or communication powers, there.0

I am frankly shocked that action would be taken against Nonce. He should have gotten a medal instead of a knife. If he had not maintained the board for D3 it would have been utter garbage.
Someone complained and Nonce get canned? I just don't get it, how disassociated can the staff be to take the rantings of one of our **** forum users over someone who has done as much as Nonce has? It is like D3 came back from vacation, found the house a wreck after a party and punished the guy that put out the fire that would have burned the house down.
Does anyone else see the irony of a complaint against Nonce being the thing D3 listens too?
Do you guys really think Nonce is out of line being aggravated? How many months has the clear need for more moderators been ignored, leaving him alone to handle all the trash?
I am truly sorry Nonce, you deserved better than this.0 -
I'd say Nonce got a raw deal if his punishment wasn't no longer being allowed to roll boulders up hills. I'm skeptical the complaining customer actually existed.0

Is that possible?!0 -
I cannot see the reason for any 'players' to complain about the topics Nonce posted.
I can on the other hand see why D3 would want a more 'moderated' moderator who just 'do his job', and not passionately trying improve the game or the forum. (which makes it a real job and deserve to get paid)
I would like to thank Nonce for his hard work in many aspect. I think you are a very responsible person, and hats off to you.
I would say this is a real blessing, as you can now relax from worrying about spams no more. From Nonce posts so far I don't think he is missing his mod role much, either. so win win situation i guess?0 -
So let me see if I understand this. You have someone who's been diligently working, as a **** volunteer no less, to keep the forums up and running against a mountain of sewage that the powers-that-be have made no reasonable attempts to curtail. This selfless volunteer posts a few things that could be considered slightly subversive and instead of taking him aside and asking him to be more careful about what he posts, him being a moderator and having more responsibility blah blah blah, instead of acting in any reasonable way in acknowledgement of what he's done to be of service he's summarily canned. Yeah, 'cause that makes good sense. Good job all around.
Enjoy your forced retirement, Nonce. The community appreciates your efforts, and the powers-that-be don't deserve your hard work anyway.0 -
IceIX wrote:Just as a note, I'm not going to stop discussion on this line of thought. I'd much rather have criticisms out in the open for everyone to take part in the discussion on it than to have it solely in PMs where everyone just trades rumors about evil Illuminati-esque things surrounding someone getting modded/de-modded. For what should be fairly obvious reasons, I'm not able to get into the exact reasonings behind the decision but that doesn't mean I'm going to stop discussion about it.0

Good job Nonce, shame to see you go. I can see both sides of the argument and I guess NE just sailed too close to representing the community rather than simply moderating discussions. I've seen similar actions taken on other 'official' forums and some of them out there are downright totalitarian in application of these things.
So, to play devil's advocate, NE was an excellent poster an great moderator in 75% of the elements of the job but I think he just cared too much to stay on the 'right' side of neutrality as far as D3 are concerned. I'd probably be the same if that was me.
p.s. I response in the EU thread IceIX / Will would be appreciated - and guess what? A comment about bad EU end times happens to be the most liked comment on that promo Youtube video you released.0 -
As long as they make clear that they're speaking only for themselves and don't represent the company in any way, volunteer mods should be free to express their opinions. Even ones that reflect negatively on the company or the game. They're forum members who help the company clean up the **** on their forums for free, limiting their speech as a price for that 'privilege' is utter nonsense.
Of course, all of this could have been avoided if there had been a direct, available line of communication between volunteer mods and one or more devs. Let your volunteers sign an NDA, and that way you can both give them concrete guidelines about what you expect of their posting and actually explain some of those things that you can't/won't explain publicly on the forum. Suddenly you have a volunteer mod who feels appreciated because he's 'in the know' (even if he can't share that info), and who no longer posts any negative comments on the forums because he can express his concerns in a more direct manner. But by going for the easy, more heavy-handed route of simply removing Nonce's moderator status, you instead create a forum culture where nobody in their right mind would volunteer for you. Good job.
I really hope that community moderator position gets filled up soon by somebody competent, because D3 is in desperate need of one.0 -
Don't really know where else to put this, here seems like as good a place as any - and besides, it's not like anyone's going to move my post anyway.
I've been off the forums for a few days, so I'm shocked to see that you've been relieved of your post, Nonce. Many thanks and congratulations for all the hard work that you did put in. You tirelessly undertook a thankless task and deserve some recognition for your effort.0 -
I guess there was a stretch there where none of us had heard anything in a while and the general feel of the board was rather disgruntled. The tone of Nonce's posts had shifted a little from 'which of these is better' polls, to 'which is the most broken ability' polls and consolidating the general level of complaints into easy to digest lists like the nerf list and the (shorter) buffed list. I can see why D3 would have preferred the most active authority on the forum to be trying to dispel the unrest instead of sorting the pitchforks and torches into neat piles for easy use, but we all were getting into that and without any actual insight from the Devs Nonce was just one of us with a green name.
I am imagining a lone officer trying to quell a riot. Is it better to try to tell everyone to calm down and get overwhelmed when they turn on him or blatantly ignore him? Or is it better to sympathize, get the mob to quantify why it is upset, lead them in preparations and then tell them we move out tomorrow, always tomorrow, never today, always tomorrow...0 -
Nonce Equitaur 2 wrote:They may have disliked that post because it contained the Nerfs list.
I compiled the list when Modern Storm was nerfed on June 30th, without warning. I was feeling quite negative about the game -- D3 had promised that stealth nerfs would never happen again. Hours later, when d3 mentioned the nerf was done in error, I wasn't feeling nearly so negative. But by then the post was pushing +50, so it didn't feel right to remove it.
Less than a month later, Modern Storm got virtually the same change. However, as I mention here, I'm okay with it, since the team-up powers will put Storm in a unique position, and they gave good buffs to Black Panther and Daredevil. The last week has shown a lot of positive actions by the devs.
But yes, a month ago I was getting mad and frustrated. When TheUnwiseOne and Clintman retired, they both mentioned spam as one of the reasons, and I was clearing spam away from the board constantly. Constantly. Mass-banning 2000 spam accounts helped a lot. Things are better now, but my pointed posts from long ago have caught up with me.
Sorry to hear this Nonce. I really liked your honesty, and I disapprove of a company that removes your volunteer help (greatly appreciated by the community) because they don't approve of your honesty. I can see how they look at it as "bad mouthing the product", but it's not like you went out and said anything untrue or wrong. You were speaking truth, from the heart: something that is nice to hear.0 -
Tinykitty them. You were too good for them anyway, Nonce.0

As for Nonce no longer being a mod, I'm just bummed b/c now my alliance no longer has the lion's share of moderators (which admittedly was only 2).0
