Thanks for being active at removing spammers! But think you might be a little too active! My friend created an account yesterday and got blocked already. now she can't post. Can you please unban "ruussh".

    Thanks in advance.

And ... I'm no long a mod. Someone didn't like one of my complaint posts, and contacted the devs. Demiurge/D3 decided I couldn't be a mod any more.

I'm sure the new mods will do fine.

    Are there any left?

You did a great job Nonce. This was not a good decision on D3's part.

Did you get a right of reply or an appeal?

An appeal? Probably not. They specifically mentioned this post as a reason to remove me as a mod.

IceIX tells me he's made some changes that should cut down on spam:

Users are Newly Registered until 5 posts
Newly Registered Users no longer have access to homepages or signatures
Newly Registered Users cannot post new threads anywhere but in Suggestions or Bugs (since that's where the majority of the legitimate single thread requests come in)
They can't use BBCode or parse any code, so no html links. They can still post the link, it'll just be text.

Which, to be fair, only really raises the bar on the arms race but doesn't solve the root concern.

Once they figure out the new status quo, you'll probably start seeing more random "Is that English? What are they saying" semi-gibberish posts across multiple threads to hit the magic 5 posts, THEN the real spam from the same ones. The root problem lies in a method by which to get and keep the sweat shop paid spammers out that doesn't also keep out the legitimate users that happen to be using the same ISPs or email services that they use.

Seriously? That one? I didn't realize that they were that thin-skinned. Those seem like genuinely legitimate questions.

I thought so too. And Demiurge_Will answered it, said how much he appreciated the polls I set up, and then went into detail for why my lists of buffs/nerfs was wrong. That post is his most popular post. But I suppose it really annoyed him, so not-a-mod now.

Yeah, that seemed completely in good faith. I guess having backing links seemed cheeky? But it's really just having your homework done already. I belatedly upvoted the post.

Just as a note, I'm not going to stop discussion on this line of thought.

I'd much rather have criticisms out in the open for everyone to take part in the discussion on it than to have it solely in PMs where everyone just trades rumors about evil Illuminati-esque things surrounding someone getting modded/de-modded. For what should be fairly obvious reasons, I'm not able to get into the exact reasonings behind the decision but that doesn't mean I'm going to stop discussion about it.

They may have disliked that post because it contained the Nerfs list.

I compiled the list when Modern Storm was nerfed on June 30th, without warning. I was feeling quite negative about the game -- D3 had promised that stealth nerfs would never happen again. Hours later, when d3 mentioned the nerf was done in error, I wasn't feeling nearly so negative. But by then the post was pushing +50, so it didn't feel right to remove it.

Less than a month later, Modern Storm got virtually the same change. However, as I mention here, I'm okay with it, since the team-up powers will put Storm in a unique position, and they gave good buffs to Black Panther and Daredevil. The last week has shown a lot of positive actions by the devs.

But yes, a month ago I was getting mad and frustrated. When TheUnwiseOne and Clintman retired, they both mentioned spam as one of the reasons, and I was clearing spam away from the board constantly. Constantly. Mass-banning 2000 spam accounts helped a lot. Things are better now, but my pointed posts from long ago have caught up with me.
  • How soon can I send PMs? Is it a time elapsed thing, or a number of posts thing?

Try sending one to me, and if it works, then you can do it.

Sorry, you are no longer a mod. Few worked as hard as you to keep the forum working/sane. I find it rather insulting that they would take action based on one person's complaint. I think of they would have polled people on the forum, they would have seen you were not one of the problems here. Oth, it was kind of wrong of them to have you do that work without any compensation, in game or otherwise.

    Edit - 2 other points.

    1. If you wrote something in black ink, we all know it's your personal opinion, and green if it's something official. It was black, I don't understand why they would force you to forgo being a forum member at all times to be a moderator post of the time.

    2. As many meetings as they have with their staff to keep everyone on the same page and effectively communicate, I don't see how they could literally abandon the site for a substantial period, provide no guidance on what moderators were doing well or what they need to do better, then punish someone for doing the best they could under unfavorable circumstances. It's really dishonoring that they want you to do the work of employees for free, bit penalize you for not providing the assistance to put you on a situation to be successful.

Consider it a well-deserved vacation. Despamming in particular is some thankless work, and is something their new CM can take up. Maybe they'll care more about it when it takes up time they're paying for.

edit: I don't mean to sound all ****. It's just that Nonce was about the only thing keeping this place from total anarchy for a month or two. Gets my back up a little.
  • I just get "We are sorry, but you are not authorised to use this feature. You may have just registered here and may need to participate more to be able to use this feature." whenever I try to compose a message from the User Control Panel. I just wanna join an Alliance, haha.

You need to get up to 5 posts, then. Just 2 posts away from raw, unmitigated power.
  • Okay, cool. Thanks!
