MPQ alternatives?

  • Tried Hearthstone and found it to be excellent so far. Taking a wait and see approach with MPQ now. I think True Healing will be rolled back to something less extreme. While I do like the variety it forces, I can no longer mindlessly grind for hours on end. And I rarely prologue healed - maybe once every few months. Just didn't need it.
  • I've heard good things about Hearthstone, and will nab it the second I'm able.

I've found Rhythm of Fighters to be hilarious and surprisingly satisfying, so I'll recommend that for any of you who like King of Fighters, rhythm games, or both. It's not MPQ, but it makes me feel good. icon_e_smile.gif

24 hours almost without anyone in my alliance chatting. Sad.

I am enjoying the expansion in diablo 3 on the pc. Enjoy Hearthstone as well.

Played spirit stones with the wife for a while.

I will checkout the frontier game mentioned. Don't really enjoy the while little girls with the cutesy pet thing so limits the Japanese games to play.

Come back to mpq once a day to see if they fixed anything. Love my collection but bored. I have over 200 days but they have driven me away.

    Hi gang!

So I've been away for a couple of weeks, and in that time I've only been logging into MPQ once a day to collect my daily reward. I came here today to recommend the main reason for that (other than being bored of MPQ) and lo and behold, this here thread is perfect for it. I also haven't seen it mentioned yet!

The game that is my current iOS crack is called Dragon Tactics, and it is - imo - hella kewl. It's like a match-3/pokemon style affair, where you put a team of element based monsters together and fight your way through dungeons, earning other monsters to level, sell, or use to feed (level up) your team. The match-3 aspect is kinda different though, in that you pick a gem and can move it about the board to anywhere you like within a time limit. This takes a little bit of getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it's a lot of fun and very tactical as moving the gem causes other gems to move (obviously) and when done effectively you can get some silly cascades happening. PRETTY LIGHTS. Cascades create combos which increase the damage done by your monsters. There are over 400 monsters, ranging from 1* to 6*. There's IAP, but you can easily play without it, as when you build up your friends list, you earn "ally points", which you can use to spin the coin slot style egg machines to earn monsters.

Everything just works really well, and it is a HELL of a lot of fun. There's also PVP, limited time events, and -get this - the customer service is really good! I messaged them yesterday as for some reason I can't connect to Facebook to save my game there. They got back to me the same day with a solution. It was a bit convoluted, so I said that I'd just use iFunbox to back it up. They replied again saying not to worry, as they store everything via the player ID anyway, and they gave me 150 dragon gems for my trouble. Gems are the in-game currency to spend on the rare coin slot machine and to buy stuff like skills and evolution monsters in the store. (which you earn in-game anyway, so it's not P2W at all. Just helps speed up the process, like using HP to buy covers in MPQ.)

So yeah, I honestly can't recommend this enough. If you do give it a go, PM me your player ID and I'll add you as a friend. My team captain is pretty awesome and will help starting players a lot.

    Enjoy!
  • If you're looking to scratch that Marvel itch, Marvel Heroes is a pretty solid F2P action game.

Tons of characters that can be earned in game or bought at a reasonable price if you don't have the patience. Best of all they have a dev team that actually seems to care about it's players, which is a refreshing change.

Anyone know of any match-3 games with more than 6x6 boards? One of the reasons I like MPQ is because it has an 8x8 board, which lends itself to actual strategic moves. Playing on 6x6 boards often feels like luck and cascades, rather than strategy.
  • Yep that is the one issue I have with Dr Who (other than it seems to get quite tough quite early, but maybe I am just no good!), the smaller board. Other than that it is pretty good.
  • Well there's Puzzle Quest 2. I've never tried it so I don't know what the f2p/iap is like, but it's published by Bandai Namco.

I actually don't even like match-3 games. I personally feel that the match-3 aspect of mpq is very diminished, which is prolly why I tolerate it.
  • Just gave Dungeon Gems a try. Looked really good, tutorial made no sense to me but I figured it would be simple to pick up.
Then it asks me to enter my name for some online shenanigans.
Typed in PACman as I like to use the same name everywhere.
Game come back telling me I have entered 'Offensive Words' and to try again!!!

****, I really dont think i will bother.

Time to give this Dr Who Legacy a shot.

EDIT: I am actually really enjoying Dr Who legacy although I find it completely hammers my phone's battery life LOL
You know one of the best things about it. All health you lose in a level is replenished at the start at the next one! No death timers! No downed characters for hours on end! No health Packs to buy!

Can you imagine that? It's almost like these devs want me to play their game , can it be true? icon_e_biggrin.gif

Yep. Doctor Who Legacy is the one for me. Sweet.

    For retro feel enjoying 10000000.
  • I'm trying Dr Who : very nice to play without any kind of stress icon_e_biggrin.gif
But the mechanics of matching are very strange : you can move a gem all along the board to make your match icon_eek.gif

(in fact, i'm more on Brave Frontier, i do not thanks the one who talk about it icon_e_biggrin.gif )
  • Yeah I am really into Dr Who now. Is actually taking time (along with the healing change) away from MPQ. Difficulty seems to have ramped up but I don't mind going back to replay other missions as I can play whenever I like, which is nice.

Exactly! you can actually play when you like and its simple to go back and do earlier levels to get stronger cause you know your characters arent gonna be out for hours after you do that.

I second this - MH is a great game, although it's a completely different genre than MPQ, so I don't know how much crossover appeal there is, outside of having the same Marvel universe.

And I also agree that their dev group is immeasurably more engaged with the forums than MPQ's, although I'd note that in spite of that, there's still a lot of tinykittying about bugs and such. Which just goes to show that no matter what, some people are ungrateful tinykitties. Or funnel cakes.

At least they acknowledge the bugs, and try to fix them. I still can't believe that they didn't know about the mid-air crit matching with OBW, like half a year later icon_eek.gif

Ever since being kicked out of MPQ, I am playing X-Com Enemy Unknown on my tablet, during transit.
It's an actual console game (and a great one at that, was GOTY 2012), and it doesn't require an internet connection.
    Very fun game.

xcom is great for sure but one thing that really bugs me with the mobile version--everyone seems to shoot right through obstacles/cover. I don't recall the console version having that issue?

For PC, "PUZZLE PIRATES" is an awesome game. It has like 20 unique puzzle games, each of them different and solid with pirate flavour (sailing, bilging, carpentry, distillin, smithing, foraging...): You can also play classic card games, like poker or hearts.

I also recommend HEARTHSTONE, a simpler version on Magic:the gathering card game. Gameplay is easy, dynamic, and each match is unique. You can play with other players in real time

This thread is great; surprised D3 doesn't shut it down. Trying out a few of these makes you realize just how much D3 is lazily relying on a solid core mechanic and a great licensed property.

I've tried PAD and Doctor Who so far. I'll probably try Brave Frontier soon as well.

PAD seems like a pretty in depth game. Lots of things to do. Leveling, fusion, social, dungeon exploring, etc. I'm going to have to read some guides on this one before I make stupid early game mistakes like spending 50 HP on c.hawkeye and m.widow.

DW:Legacy is a fun game, especially starting out, but I can see where it might get very grindy. I've already got a couple characters stuck at level ten needing a single time artifact to enable their upgrade past that point. I've replayed missions that can drop that artifact a couple times with no luck yet. I could also see myself grinding away on some levels to get certain characters. At least it's another licensed property that has an appeal to my inner geek.

Both games have a huge plus in that I can play them on my schedule. Although they both allow moving the gem anywhere on a smaller board, which still feels very wonky to me, not used to that quite yet.
