MPQ alternatives?

I get an Xbox One the instant Elder Scrolls Online hits the console. It looks more and more like that will be 2015.
Dungeon Gems: Tried it for ten minutes and deleted it. Too noisy and not enough fun. It really just made me wonder why Dungeon Raid 2 is not a real thing that exists.
Spirit Stones: Same. This lady is a princess but she can only afford a tiny piece of armor on one shoulder? I call shenanigans. The game suffers from serious overboob - and this is coming from a guy who grew up watching misogynistic anime.
I now remember a chillingo-published game called Puzzlecraft. It uses the same mechanics as Dungeon Raid for matching. You play monarchs attempting to rebuild their kingdom by collecting wheat, fruit, vegetables and animals in the field and types of ore in the mines. You can then create resources and new peasant classes to allow you to obtain more wheat/ore/etc. Like other f2p games Puzzlecraft has that annoying timer system where you have to put the game down for a while unless you pay them real money, but it is more forgiving than many f2p games and I managed to "beat" it without spending a dime.
No PVP or anything, but it's not like this game really has PVP either.
Dungeon Raid: A funny $0.99 tile matching roguelike for the iPhone. It came out years ago and has not been updated in forever. Still lots and lots and lots of fun. Stupid spiky skulls may haunt your dreams.
So when do we all get together and kickstart our own mmo tile matching game with RPG elements as a response to the garbage currently available?0 -
haha, nice post
Will look into Dungeon Raid. I have no issue with a game not being updated. Better than a game being updated, that makes the game worse.0 -
It'll only work for multiplayer for six more months, but Ascension: Chronicle of the Godslayer is (along with Carcassonne) pretty much the gold standard in adapting a real-life board/card game to the iOS, and the base set is free. It's probably my favorite constructible card game, and I play it more than Hearthstone, not least because it's more suited for asynchronous play. The company that makes it (Playdek) has also done some other great games, and has made most of them free for brief flash sales at times.
Since folks mentioned DC stuff upthread (and I agree that a DC version of MPQ would just be another skin of the current game), has anyone played their freebie, Injustice: Gods Among Us? It's large enough that I've never been able to justify the download or time investment yet.0 -
I downloaded Spirit Stones off the app stone. That's when they spring the other download on me. 444 megs? no dice.
Not surprised, given that is published by Gamevil.0 -
I am quite into Dr Who now. Seems to be MPQ, but without the silly changes. Will see how deep I get into it.0
-
So, I tried the original Puzzle Quest on Nintendo DS..
Man, it was hard.. I wiped so many times on the tutorial fight thay actually fights back LOL
All the while I kept saying "if only I have my CMag, you will be toast..!"
Though the game mechanic is so different from MPQ.. MPQ could be so much better if not for screwed up devs0 -

Hearthstone isn't on my Galaxy and Puzzle and Dragons isn't in the UK, so I am struggling to find an alternative right now. Haven't given up on this game, yet, though. Not far off mind you.
With a little Googling it is possible to get the US version of PaD, annoyed me too as I have an S3. Very very good game.0 -
Ah, OK. I will investigate. It's a work phone, so I can't do too much "dodgy" to it, but will take a peek if/when this Dr Who game wears out it's welcome.0

All it requires is you uncheck the little box in the settings that will allow you to download apps that are not from the Play Store. Be sure tomdownload the most up to date version.0

I'm 29 tnx for info i will play seems like fun game and good too....0 -
I'm playing Fez when I need a short playtime, and Torchlight 2 when I have a bit longer to put in it. These are both games I was putting off due to MPQ...right up until True Healing. That change made me finish off the Lego Marvel game (I like most of the Marvel games), and Party of Sin from one of the humble bundles.
For those looking for fun games at good deals (and might not know), try:
humblebundle.com
--Tuesdays (usually, none now) have some great bundle, including for phones occasionally. That deal lasts two weeks, their "weekly" tab has a new bundle every Thursday that lasts a week. These you can pay any amount for some games ($0.01), $1 for steam codes, or beat the average for most of them. The weekly's are usually $6 instead of an average.
https://www.indiegala.com/
--Another good bundle site, Monday/Friday bundles. Not usually as high of profile games, but I've found some gems on here occasionally.
With these two bundle sites my steam account has 300+ games, and my average price for them is well below 50 cents (which would include a couple that I bought on steam sales at $20 or so).
Gog.com -- all your classic games here, often at super cheap prices. These are a bit more money, but there are some great titles in here.0 -
Just a reminder guys: the REAL puzzle quest games ( i.e. PQ and PQ2) are still on sale on steam for their summer sale for the next ~20 min for $5 ea. If you're interested in playing a PQ game without all the **** health packs, required grinding, MMO-like play-time requirements, micro-transactions, and overall **** that Demiurge brought to the franchise in MPQ, you might want to give them a spin.
Snowcat, if you liked the original Diablo, you'll love Torchlight 2.0 -
I play on PC (through Steam) and some alternatives I have found are:
[NOTE: These are other Free-to-Play games, but don't restrict how long you can play them like MPQ does.]
[NOTE 2: Again, these are on PC. Click the links to be taken to their Steam store page.]
1. Path of Exile - A fun Diablo-like game. The "pay" stuff is mostly cosmetic stuff. So it's not pay to win!
2. Hearthstone - A pretty solid card game. You can pay to get more cards (but can win card packs playing for free too!). Matchmaking against other plays seems pretty fair, as well.
3. Marvel Heroes (AKA Marvel Heroes 2015 now) - Marvel: Ultimate Alliance meets Diablo meets World of Warcraft. Most of the stuff you can pay for you can get for free simply by playing the game or through free promotions.
4. Dwarfs!? F2P - A fun single-player game where you have your dwarfs dig for resources to get a high score. Try to get the highest score possible while protecting your city of dwarves from the dangers in the hidden caves. This one somewhat restricts how long you can play, as you can only play in 5, 15, 30 or 60 minute sessions. But this is simply due to scoring. You can play a 60-minute game and then jump right into another 60-minute game right after. So it sort of restricts but sort of doesn't as well.
5. Games on Kongregate - Thousands of free flash games for you to play. While a few of them have an energy system (like some games on Facebook) they are rare, since Kongregate users usually rip those games apart and rate them lowly. Play the games, earn badges. Pretty addictive. A lot of popular indy developers have gotten their start on Kongregate. You can even find some Kongregate games now on Steam, such as Kingdom Rush and Cursed Treasure. Kongregate also has a mobile app, but the mobile app doesn't have nearly as many games as the website does.
As for paid (although cheap) alternatives (Again, these are also on PC, but might be on mobile too, I'm not sure.)
10,000,000 - Nice little oldschool-feel game. You match puzzle pieces to run through dungeons. Upgrade your house for better upgrades to run further, and harder, dungeons. Reach a score of 10,000,000 to escape and win the game. $5 on Steam.
ReignMaker - A match-3 game where you defend your city by matching the puzzle pieces. Match gems to eliminate the monsters trying to attack your city. Very fun and unique match-3 game. Although it gets kind of tough later on, especially during boss battles. $15 on Steam.
The post above me also mentions Puzzle Quest 1 (Challenge of the Warlords) and Puzzle Quest 2. Those games are also great. Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords (1) is by far the best, though. The others don't quite live up. If you do look at the other Puzzle Quest games, do yourself a favor and just ignore Galactrix, though. That one gets boring very fast. Regardless, all of them are $10 on Steam.0 -
Playing Fable Age now. A bit different type of matching game than MPQ, but good so far. Easily good enough to supplement, if not supplant MPQ now that I'm not playing nearly as much. It's fairly addictive, and has lots of characters that I know. Similar/better level up process with evolve capability similar to Puzzle and Dragons. You can totally play on your own terms and earn/win new heroes and such. I really like that the story missions have more than a week's worth of content and everything isn't a competition to win stuff. I can totally play as much or little as I want and am choosing to play quite a bit...sounds like the the goal of another game I remember.
Seriously, I'm not sure I'm going to quite MOQ entirely right now, but am playing half if not a quarter as much as before the end of season 2 and then the new healing changes. Eventually will prob end up just stopping as I care less and less, but I'm not even really mad about it anymore. Horay MPQ! You've taken me to through the journey that every game/team/product hopes to avoid, from avid fan to regular fan to angry fan to total apathithetic fan. All that's left if non-fan and then I think I get a badge or a token or something.0 -
I almost forgot Scurvy Scalawags. It's a fun match-3 with some interesting mechanics.
I also just heard a third Sword & Poker game is out as a soft-launch in some territories. Unfortunately it is f2p with timers. =/0 -
