So it's not at all clear what they're actually meant to be. They're hard to acquire and level which suggests they should be strong, but most of them are truly awful.Went way back in the time machine to find this gobbledygook from the original announcement in April of 2018!
https://forums.d3go.com/discussion/71833/brand-new-supports-feature-4-5-18
"We are excited to share a brand new feature we believe you will enjoy called Supports. Supports will be arriving in Marvel Puzzle Quest next week. What is Supports you ask? In brief, Supports brings all the elements of the Marvel Universe to Marvel Puzzle Quest in the form of bonus items, vehicles, locations, and sidekick (companion) characters, which will be equipped to your 3, 4, and 5-star characters, giving them access to increased stats and new powers and abilities! "
Basically, even back then it isn't clear quite what they are and how powerful they should be and nothing has really changed much in the seven + years since.
Disagree. They were a nonfactor for years. Impossible to finish and near zero impact on any game mode. Being a joke, no one cared, beyond thinking what might have been.
Then they became obtainable, and impactful, and player passions were aroused.
That's a heckuva lot of change.
I thought they were worthless and had no impact until they showed up in PvP, but I wasn't a PvE player. Players were using the free AP ones (and ONLY the free AP ones) to turn0 PvE fights for a long time.
A "long" time? Only since the release of 5May. Not that long before supports were tossed onto PvP.
Oh no, there were teams that could do it WAY before her! She's just the fastest/most reliable/accessible.
Again, nahhhh. Clunky convolute AP gimmick teams never set the pace, and therefore weren't affecting the PvE mode as a whole, until 5May came along. Various teams helped rosters prematurely punch up into higher SCLs, sure, but they were not fast. Not fast enough, anyway.
Apocalypse/BRB/KK could turn0 all the hard nodes with AP supports, and that team is very old. There were others.
(Ok, I forgot you needed two iso boosts too -- it was a long time ago!)

Oh, right, thanks for ... illustrating my point so well.
Again, yes, highly-leveraged teams using AP supoorts as jumpstart exist and havbe existed since supports have existed. But match lengths aren't measured in turns, they're measured in time. When that one turn lasts half an hour, requiring abilities to be fired repeatedly and multiple rounds of tiles to be created / resolved, a player can punch up, clear a node otherwise beyond reach, win the battle ... but lose the war.
Why such teams, until 5May, couldn't match, much less set, the pace.
The PvE metas prior to 5May were about passives, AoEs and damage boosts. It took 5May to get a ludicrous, 1st turn, side-clearing AoE.

(Removed snark)
You cast apocalypse yellow then black then the game is over. It's not "leveraged" in any way, it's a turn0 two power kill.
If you haven't been around that long, or haven't been at the top that long, you wouldn't have seen this sort of thing, and that's ok.

I'm not a big pve player, but I have alliance mates that are and that team was literally the fastest pve meta team prior to aunt may being introduced.

It kind of does? I think you’re one of the funniest players in this game. But I’ve noticed this past week your posts are more frustrated, personal, and even aggressive than I’ve seen from you before. Now, of course that is your complete right, and i am just another player in the black void of what’s online interaction. But I also wanted to share that recently I’ve not recognized the funny DAZ that I’ve come to enjoy and appreciate so much.
That said, no offense taken at all if you ignore this or tell me this is none of my business, because it isn’t.
I guess none of us can bring their A game every time. I feel like the game and everything around it has likewise been characterised by the same values listed above recently. I am not going to lie and say some of it hasn't frustrated me and possibly my tolerance levels have dropped a bit. It happens.
It seems a bit unfair that I seem to be held to some higher level of expectation when I am only as human as the next player. I suppose I should be flattered but I see myself just as you see yourself - just another player. I am glad that my nonsense amuses people and thank you for your kind comment. That said this is not the first time that somebody has said to me "Oh your purpose here is just to be a goofball, you can't have real opinions or get frustrated."
That said if anything I do or say negatively impacts on others enjoyment then absolutely I should and will evaluate what I post on here because that is never my intention.
So sorry I have let you down, I can't promise not to do so again but I'll try.

It takes a lot more than that to offend me and I'm happy to be your favourite Canadian Floridian. You're my favorite Game of Thrones Recapper by far.
Anyway, I wrote the 5 star player comment not because I can't be a 5 star player (I clearly can) but more to remind EB that he's seeing all supports though the eyes of a 5 star (really a max champed 5 star) player. In other words there are other players viewing those same supports through different eyes depending on where they are in the game. My stepson for example has a very different roster than mine as a relative newer / part time player. He basically only has the 'best of' characters in all the tiers beyond 2 (where he has everyone champed). In other words he just has 4 or 5 3s champed (the best ones) and 4-5 4's champed (the best ones) and about 10 5s in various stages (Shang has the most covers at 10) plus a few others in 3/4 land he is slowly working on if I tell him they are useful. For him support look vastly different than they do to EB or even me. He uses a R4 Sharon on his Shang because he doesn't have a Chimi and even at L300 those bonus red/blue match damages and extra purple AP chance make her a very valuable support for him.
KGB
I do understand - my wife and son have likewise similar rosters and lack of Supports (in fact your stepson's roster is much better than both).

Thank you for your thoughtful and honest reply. Incredibly fair points. Please know that I value your opinions, the funny and the serious - all of them. It was simply the delivery I was commenting on. And even then, you have every right to be as frustrated as all of us are right now.

It's all good matey. My tone was too aggressive to KGB but wasn't intended to be. We can all now return to the totally non frustrating subject of Supports in PvP. Oh...

All supports, even the 4 that are on break for rebalance, are live in lightning rounds.

I have barely dipped my toe in and yes, this looks quite bad. We might actually need Supports on this one..
