Been out a year, has the game changed?

Some of them got scared into not jumping into 5* land. Common reasons I saw are:

4* land is more fun and diverse.
5* MMR makes matches more difficult.

I saw a post a few years back where the op fully covered IM40 and Dr. Strange but left them capped to exploit the 2* MMR for 75 easy wins. Every time I see Kitty or BRB fully covered but lvl300 I think of that. Having just taken a 5/4/3 Kitty through the first few nodes of SCL10 in Spider Silk it seems like a reasonable strategy.

On a side note and I hope this doesn’t get branched off to a new post , but I have a member in my alliance with over 50% 5* “champed “ at 13 covers yet they’re all 255-265. Explain this logic and is it rational to play that way ?
This describes me though I leveled the meta ones to 300. And I have 25 million ISO so it's not an ISO issue (could be your alliance mates issue).
It's definitely so I can remain in 4* PvP where I enjoy playing due to diversity. Plus with the bulk of my 4* at 320-330 level I am a big fish in 4* land where I'd be a minnow in 5* land with 450-455 level characters.

Do you find your underleveled 5* better than the majority of 4*s? How do Okoye and Apocalypse play?

I never use underleveled 5* unless they are boosted. They just aren't near as effective or as fast as Grocket/Polaris or America/Karnak or other top 4* meta teams.
But the 5* boost has made them all viable when they are boosted because at level 400+ they suddenly hit like trucks with match damage and powers.
In truth I can and should probably level them all to 330 now given that I have more than 15 4* already past that level so they couldn't change my MMR. That would make them even better when boosted but probably still useless when not.

Now that PVE roster scaling hasn’t been around for a loooong time, the only reasoning for soft-capping is 1. Severe lack of resources or 2. Cowardice.

There are a lot of ways to play the game and I think all of them are ok if having fun.
If I had softcapped my 5*s then I'd be wondering how I'd be feeling playing them.
And perhaps I would champ one.
And, oops, then there is no turning back, much better the 5*s.
However is a question of personal ambition, or hunger of new experiences.

Hello (old) friends. I retired in June of last year (I think?) so I guess 16 months ago? Like Riddle I had a ton of resources. I never deleted my account but I knew I wouldn't go back (and haven't). I quit cold turkey one day when I realized the game no longer felt fun but felt more like a chore. Some mix of reasons thousands of people before me have already given. I tried to play casual and here and there and, well, that wasn't much fun either.

I never replaced it with some other mobile game. Getting my eyes off my phone for hours a day has been... enlightening. I do miss my Line friends and some of our shenanigans, but I also quit Line because I didn't want to get sucked back into it.

Anyhoo, glad to see some familiar faces are still getting enjoyment out of the game.

Hey,  Smokey, I think you gave me the courage to quit when I saw that you didn't come back and were happier.  I had quit many times before,  but stayed on line which made me come back.  At our levels,  playing casual is very hard.   Now about the conversation about why underlevelling 5 stars, if you want to play the game for the mechanics,  is a smart move.   One thing I've noticed in other candy crush type games is that after a certain point,  they make level hard by just decreasing the turns available to you.   You become reliant on boosts and prayers for a proper cascade.    That's why I usually stop playing those games.   MPQ is different,  you can make the levels harder by leveling you characters,  but you don't have to.   It also makes it tedious.   When it was just 3 and 4 stars and everyone had them,  you saw a variety of other players to beat up on.   Plus the matches didn't take forever.   Once 5 stars came in and then champ levels,  the characters received an obscene amount of hp.  Matches took forever to finish.   Many people are just playing for the sake of playing, with a couple of matches here and there.    As has been mentioned,  only 2% are on line (I think it's less) and are scheduling their lives around this game.  I was ecstatic when I first got my 550s.  Matches were fast and plentiful because only 10 or so other guys had that high of a roster spread over 5 slices.   Then the dark days of hoarding started and okoye came on the scene.   460 rosters were beating 550s and so many 550s were there that it took some time to get through the matches.  With mmr the way it is,  550s could only see each other.   You couldn't find the 460 roster that just hit you for 3 or 4 times because they can see you for points,  but you can't see them for mmr reasons.  Also,  because 5 stars are so expensive,  you only see the same meta for about 2 years plus the same person behind the rosters.  550s are also entitled jerks.  Once we get hit at the most unopportune time (usually because we have to eat up all the points and be the last person to shield and by that point we are the highest point available,  and did I mention that 460s can beat 550s) we tend to pout and not shield up making it harder for the rest of the 550s.  In 3 and 4 star land,  you have many more (by a factor of 10 to 50 I would think).  3 to 4 star players aren't going to win top placement,  but they will win all the progression rewards for a much more enjoyable time I think.   It's a trade off,  for not having your phone on at all times to make sure to que high point targets all day.  It can become very frustrating.

This is exactly my approach, too. Though I levelled my to 360. It's my perfect sweet spot.
I have zero intentions to ever champ them and I wouldn't do it any other way. To each their own, however.
