This is sort of profound. The weirdest thing about this game is that all the skill comes in the meta game and there is actually very little skill in the actual game. Can you get better at matching and ability selection against the AI? Probably, but it won't matter much at all. You can cheat the **** out of this. Can you get better at manipulating MMR, tanking, shielding, playing at the right time, resetting stacks correctly, entering tourneys at the right time, picking a good defensive team, opponent selection, having the right characters for PvE's, for late pushes, early pushes, etc.? Absolutely, and I submit that it will make 10x more difference than whether you know what color to match when.

This is really true. When I was just straight up playing the game and pushing through pain MMR, I lost interest because the core gameplay is so basic.
I still can barely muster up the energy to play through PvE content for ISO.

Somehow though, inadvertently MPQ has created a pvp system that's actually interesting beyond the mechanics of the game itself.
    charity stuff

I'm mildly amazed how much interest that generated, considering when I'm actually trying to be funny usually only one or two people comment on these forums =(

  • My, after a VERY hard day at work, coming home to find this thread was a delight. Thank you guys.

I would love to see what happened if everyone were given the same roster and same shielding opportunities and same amount of playing time for a single tournament.
i.e. For one tourney, everyone gets a 3hr and an 8 hr shield, any set of any configuration of 4 maxed 1*'s and 3 total hours of playing time (including healing runs). Everyone starts at even MMR which is unaffected by other play (no tanking in other events). That would interest me SO much more than whatever it is we have right now.

I've often proposed a 'timed' PVP mode. Where I would face your team of 3 and my winning time would be posted (but not presented to the you). Then you would play my team (at your lesiure) and try to best my winning time. Lowest winning time is granted the points.

I think it would introduce another layer of strategy where defense, tile matching efficiency and ability usage play a greater role than they do now. It still wouldn't be a perfect solution, as I'm sure there would be a bunch of unforeseen ways to 'game the system', but it would add another wrinkle to this game.

Just out of curiousity, can you still get attacked?

I ran into two cheaters in the lightning rounds this week. They weren't impressive, characters were not fully maxed. But I was currently in 7th and constantly check my status against the other peoples and both of them were not in the standings. One had a slightly higher rating than me the other slightly lower but both would be in the top 10.

I did attack one of them, (probably shouldn't of because he had a 110 Rags) but I did win unscathed and I am fairly certain his points dropped when he showed up in my MMR again. So from that you can still attack the sandboxed players, and steal points. Might affect their points but that doesn't actually matter.
  • If there's nobody that's eligible to have more than 0 point how's the game supposed to conjure an opponent out of thin air? We know the game can't break the MMR rules, as in it can't just give you someone whose team is a level 20 when you're level 141 just because they happen to have a comparable score, so the number of opponents you can have is generally a lot less than it'd appear.

As for the skill in this game, the game is not that complicated but it's not just grinding hard that lets the same guys who consistently place well in PvE events (PvP is harder to do with any kind of consistency because MMR means not everyone is on the same field). Matching the right tiles quickly is a lot harder than it sounds. You may think this game isn't timed, but whenever you exit a game and found out you lost 150 points you'll realize that there's definitely a very real time dimension in this game. Walkyourpath used IM40 on his team, and that is a relatively weak character, but part of what made his strategy worked was that he can still win relatively quickly with a weak character, so that he always have IM40 on defense to discourage potential attackers. Although it's mostly due to accident, the characters that are difficult to attack tends to be pretty weak offensively, so you actually have to know what you're doing when you used these characters. Bugpop had a post about how he stopped using Spiderman because Spiderman was only slowing him down, and that's a true statement, but without the safety net Spiderman provides, you really can't make any mistakes and you really have to know how your matchups work. For example, without Spiderman, you definitely need to be watching for Berserker Rage because you can't just stun the other team when they do that, and it might even be a good idea to have someone who can clear green tiles (Thor, GSBW) without that safety net.

Hm, then how would we be able to tell? For all we know, anyone of us could be put into a sandbox without even realizing...

I'm sure there are a couple of cases where legit players who might have spent a fortune on he game were sandboxed because their speedy level ups of covers. they wouldnt even even know it since the game doesnt give out warnings or say hey you've been sandboxed enjoy single player while we still let you attack legit players. also they will probably keep spending money till whenever. idk if me attacking some of the ranked people affected their mmr after i attacked someone on the top ten they had less mmr than beofre i attacked them i dont know if its from me or from another person who might have fought them at the same time i did or if even though i am sanboxed i can still afect the other player which would diminish the point of having a sandbox in the first place.

    Edithehe 69 giggity
  • Yeah it would really sucked if you are legit player, but still get sandboxed for some mistake. And there's no way to tell.

Unless you're the top ranker in unbraketed tourney anyway. Without someone telling you that you are not on the leaderboard, no way to even tell if you got boxxed.

even in unbracketed tourneys you dont place first if you're boxxed the game goes with the same leaderboars of legit pve. Not to mention same rubberbanding and everything its like your really competing against the world in pve in which case the people who have the time to grind will always win
  • Lol, Exitium, weren't you in my Simulator bracket? The one that lilu has been leading since round 2 or 3? 'Cause our main bracket did have a mysterious place shifting when I was 12th and then reached 11th without doing anything at all. My normal sub has 201 players atm.

I sooooo love the idea. But then the characters with fastest animations would rule too much, lol. Maybe it's just my notion and they actually have animations of the same length? Including passives which should be compared to other passives.
I agree with what has been said about the meta game, but I actually dislike the fact that to do well you need to know this. I came for a PQ game, not for a timing contest game. But it's alright, because I do not wish to do well at a fast rate anyway, I want the game not to lose its charm too fast. Actual PvP would bring so much flavour! The meta game only exists because we fight one and the same AI.

  • But the other question is, "If you're a legit player and you're sandboxed and you don't notice, who cares?" (Also, if you fall in the woods, do you make a sound?)
  • Which leads to the next question, "Do cheaters even care?"
  • I think they care. They either want to grief the players who care too much about a game or they want to fool players into thinking they are equals/great players that earned their spot.

There's definitely an attention-seeking aspect to most cheaters. Although with some recent games, there is a profit-incentive to cheating (selling accounts, gear, gold) that rewards those that remain anonymous.
  • I hit the 0 pt. zone this morning. I bet the extended length of this event is part of what is breaking the math. Already a ~360 pt. delta between 1st and 10th. Devs are aware, at least! Hoping for a fix today. Time to do my best Donatello impersonation and demonstrate some T-U-R-T-L-E power.

(If you recognize that reference, you're probably "old" like me.)

How come TMNT are old? I mean they are old, but they are also having movies, running series and whatnot.

I meant specifically the Turtle Power song that came out around the time of the first movie (1990). I had a cassette tape of the single. icon_eek.gif

It was gloriously cheesy, but I thought it was the coolest thing ever when I was younger, lol.
  • The song where they say Raphael is the leader not Leonardo? Always bugged me. I like it.
