What a pleasant PvE this is compared to the last.
Couldn't agree more. Particularly this 2nd sub, which has been a cakewalk. However, the difficulty gets ramped up for the next sub, when DOOM is introduced. Summon Demons and Masterstroke, on repeat, all sub long.
I already reached the final progress reward and don't care about placement, so in theory I could skip the last sub completely.
I probably won't, but it's good to have the option.

I am in a similar boat that I either need top2 or top150. Right now, we have little separation for top2 (12 of us with just some timing differences separating), so I will push while XF is in sight and can pack it in (with no reprecussions) if he is no longer a viable dream.

Without 8 hour refreshes, I would never have been in a position to consider going after a top2. I have never enjoyed PvE more than now.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I still go in to the nodes with Mistique and goons expecting to be obliterated by Masterstroke every 3-4 turns and then checking to see if I'm about to get hit and being pleasantly surprised to see almost no black AP in stock on the opponents team... icon_cool.gif I think this is because the goons no longer generate AP in colours they don't have, which is SUCH a relief. Makes for a much more enjoyable experience this time around, on the second sub anyway. The 3rd sub still has Doombots pumping black and blue (and now purple? icon_eek.gif ) for Dr. Doom IIRC
  • I apologize for being naive in saying strategy beats AI rediculousness (i.e., Twin Pistols). Thank you, raisinbman (my alliance leader) for fearlessly criticizing me on the forums, and I am not being sarcastic.

But here it is, I grew up playing 8-bit video games and plenty more games where you die on a level or boss fight and have to start over. Games where you get your butt handed to you and maybe sheer LUCK is envolved, this I am used to. HOWEVER, I will not spend money on boosts to beat a level. I draw the line at that. And I am not here to say anyone is playing the game wrong by spending money on boosts, it's obviously my choice. So if I wipe on a node and the frustration sets in of "OH NO SOMEONE WHO HAS A BETTER ROSTER/PAYS TO PLAY GETS ALL THE GOODIES AND I DON'T." Then that is that.

EDIT: Okay so boosts don't have to cost money, directly. The point of my rank is- MPQ PvE looks to now have nodes with a risk/reward set up of "Hey you might wipe 50-85% of the time on this node". I don't mind the dynamic of that. Like I stated, it's a nastalgic element of how many games are/have been. The only strategy seems to approach these high risk nodes after burning throught the rest where a one-shot ability on turn 2 is unlikely.
  • Just claimed my blueflag.png . Now my icon_rocket.png finally has all 3 colors!

I'll do a sweep when we get to Latveria, but, other than that, I'm all done. Now I'm free to concentrate on 1K in Category-5! icon_e_wink.gif

GL to DreadL0rd in my slice, my fully covered icon_daredevil.png and my 5 greenflag.pngicon_wolverine.png are rooting for your 1st place win!

I actually didn't realize it was you until a little bit after(I barely look at names on anything anymore icon_razz.gif), lol!

I mean, I understand where you're coming from. I, for the longest time(due to being a noob/proud) did not want to use boosts either. But I:

    A) Did not realize how cheap they were

    B) Did not realize how easy(Keep in mind I'm a 2*player with access to MagStorm) it made matches and how fast it made them. No more getting beaten by level 94 Thor in PVP(usually) because I took too long to match!

    C) Did not get any response from D3 on how long I'll be here as a transition player(almost 200 days) as opposed to a 3* player. My suggestions still sit on the forum, unresponded to, so I guess they're okay with the fact that I'm going to be a transition player for a longgggg time. There's no rhyme or reason as to what covers we'll have access too(BESIDES NEW CHARACTERS WHO MIGHT BE FOUR STARS!!!!ONE!!111!!!). I only grow horizontally, not vertically.

I mean, I get it. Sometimes I shake my head and say "I'll NEVER do that" in certain games and with certain techniques/strategies(using and purchasing a fight stick for fighting games, buying certain cards to play certain decks in MTG and a lesser extent hearthstone, having to sit down and practice against cheapo/OP strategies and characters, using voice chat), because I'm slightly hardheaded.

But since my ISO usage doesn't matter since I'll be stuck a transition player for the foreseeable future and it saves me time, I'll gladly do it.

As I was getting my feet wet with MPQ I was in the idealistic mindset of not putting a penny into this game. However, I have an affinity for Marvel, a collection of comics that include 300+ issues of Uncanny X-Men, and so on. So I don't feel like I am making a deal with the devil if I throw some dollar bills at roster spots. So right now I feel justified in expanding my roster with my collector's mindset. As far as spending money on packs, ISO (130% sale almost had me giggling on the floor), or boosts... no current interest.

I have already immersed myself in this game to where there's no going back. I love this game. I do. But where do we draw the line at the actually co$t of beating a node in PvE?
  • There's strategy involved in everything even when it's X Force with a green pump or Devil Dino (NPC uber version) with a green pump but it's not your strategy that did most of the work compared to your boosts or the AI going "Let me skip my one hit kill move for no reason". Hood with 4 yellow AP a turn is well outside the realm of strategy once his level is at all respectable. It doesn't hurt if you have an idea of how to approach this fight versus going in blind, but strategy isn't going to stop that turn 3 Twin Pistols that take at least half of your health (and outright one shot someone at high levels) as well as immediately scrambling the board which allows Dormammu's Aid to go into full gear.

I think a lot of people also don't recognize that some combination of villian/goon is subject to a wide swing of luck. For example, one of the essential is Mystique + 2 Empiricist. Iso 8 Conversion has the same cost as Infiltration, so it's exactly 50/50 which abilitiy gets used and the two aren't exactly comparable in terms of danger. If you get mostly Iso 8 Conversions then it's an easy fight. If not, you could end up taking 5 Masterstrokes before you knew what happened. You can take a chance, or just boost some more and have a much less likely chance of running into that scenario. You don't have to boost (I don't in this particular case) but it's not wrong to avoid a potentially disastrous situation either.

Latveria. 2 essential nodes are Star-Lord, the third is back to Rocket and Groot.

    Doombots. Lovely.

I find the essentials a tough one to beat. I've successfully conquered them once but not so sure on my 2nd &/or 3rd attempt. Anyone got any tactics?
  • Got to lab work node on 3rd sub and just stared for about a minute. My brain went into overdrive on how many ways mystique/doom/ap pumping goon could kill me. Short answer: a lot. That is some serious synergy. Not to mention they'll be competing for ap with any combo of mnmags/cstorm/obw. Any tips before I tackle this one?

I went with Panther and oBW, with +3 Black. Boosted up, she still covers black for me, so with the pump, I was getting 4 black per match and got to 12 pretty quick. Rage knocked out Doom (who I started on) and the Bot. Mystique was trivial after that. It helped to have a lot of black on the board but that always seems to happen when I fight Doom (tinfoil hat alert)

Ah yes, bp. I've heard rumors of such a creature. Along with Bigfoot and the loch Ness monster, I've never personally had a sighting myself. One of these days...

Luckily I got an extremely good board with wolvie/mnmags/cstorm and beat it. With 8 hour refreshes I may even try again if I'm feeling froggy.
  • Doombots have exceptionally low health and a lot of time it's best to try to knock them out first depending on how your scaling looks like. Similar to The Hood, match damage boosts are handy here too.

I hope those who were asking for a 3rd ability for Doom are having fun with the last 3 non essential nodes
  • This pve has been good for me, a transition player. I've been able to get up there and stay, hopefully I can pull a top ten.

Here is something that drives me nuts because I can't figure it out. I have hit each of my refreshes as soon as they've reached FULL POINTS, and I have hit each node on each clear. So I should have the maximum points available in my bracket.

So if I'm sitting at 2nd place, why does the bracket leader have 45 more points than I do? And I have 30 points ahead of 3rd place. I'm not exactly worried about my placement here. But I have been noticing this more and more lately (before 8-hour refreshes) - where point totals differ by he slightest of points. Are other players unable to beat a node so double-tap another node to compensate or something? I'm all kinds of confused over this.

OBW is the shizznits for Doom/Mystique/goon nodes:
    1) OBW shares the exact same colours as Doom/Mystique - purpletile.pngbluetile.pngblacktile.png
    2) Espionage will steal one purple, blue or black tiles that the opponent makes every time she makes the same colour match, denying the NPCs of APs
    3) She is boosted for this PvE, thus she will be tanking all the above colours.
    4) If you let the NPC match one purple, then two other purple matches allow you to cast Aggressive Recon, given your Recon is at 3 covers. Which subsequently will steal 3 other colours that the NPC has, including blue and black.

Just lump her with damage dealers/board clearers and it's doable. As a 2*-3* transitioner my partners of choice are cStorm and 2*Thor.

When I'm early to my refreshes, I notice that node point values hit their peak sometimes 3-4 minutes before the timer has ended. Is there any kind of advantage to waiting to extra minutes if I'm already getting the full value?

I usually wait (unless I'm in a rush) for the time to reset but think it's silly to waste time for no reason. Maybe there are weird fragments of the score not seen because the value being shown is rounding up to he nearest whole number?

It's these little questions that keep me up at night.
