Standard.

So, standard is a thing now. Dunno if it'll rotate like paper MtG or work more like modern, but either way, I'm very interested to see what this does to the metagame. This cuts out a lot of the most powerful cards from Pvp. Which is a good thing. The devs will have to be very careful with the power level. If it turns out like modern in paper MTG then we have a problem. There's only a handful of cards in each new set that make it into modern, standard however has a constantly lower power level and I think this is the direction they should take the game into. They screwed up with SOI and raised the power level stupidly high, and they're undoing it now. This is a good thing. But they'll need to be careful to not make that mistake again. Are they learning? I'm hopeful.

Kind of weird that you can have cards from Origins in "Standard". Maybe they haven't noticed the Starfield of Nyx / Insidious Will combo.

SOI had a lot of problem cards, but then, so did BFZ, and, indeed, Origins and KLD have some problem cards too.

Core sets don't really work that way - it's more like having a new origins like set every year0
-
Origins is Puzzle Quest's Alpha.
There are no more base sets, BTW. Standard is now just "the last 4 blocks."
Base Set + Last 2 blocks was the way they did things when they had 3-set blocks. Now, blocks are 2 sets. Origins was combined with Dragons of Tarkir to form one "Block" which rotated out last September.

Maybe some of the older cards rotate into Orgins? The base set always evolved but never created net new cards, rather they were reprints from expansions.0

The only way to crawl out from under the SOI/EMN shadow was to do something like this.

Core sets always had new cards. Core sets are different from Base Sets. Base sets (after Alpha) were all reprints. The first Core set was Magic 2010, and it had a mixture of new cards and reprints.
Origins was the last Core set in paper Magic. Magic has switched to a new block structure where blocks have 2 sets per block, and standard consists of the most recent 4 blocks.

I'm a bit dated on my paper magic history but I still think AER is to MtGPQ what Fallen Empires was to paper magic... Printed way too many packs for way too small of a set.....0
-
It wasn't the print run of Fallen Empires which was the problem. It was the fact that they were trying to Nerf the power level of the game by deliberately printing bad cards.
Since then, they've figured out better ways to do that. In later blocks, they would print powerful cards and then ban / restrict them in formats where they became a problem. Just recently, they've banned several cards from Standard.
In Puzzle Quest, they can just change the card if it's too much of a problem, or at least that's the theory.

Arlinn better has some great amonkhet cards. otherwise, she's screwed big time.2
-
The way they're doing it seems to follow the method that Android: Netrunner and Hearthstone did. Include the base set cause that set probably had the most time for playtesting and was intended to be a set introducing a lot of the basic cards. Then include X number of the latest sets for the latest flavour.
There is no reason that they can't decide to tweak an Origins card some time down the road if they find that it is warping the meta. But restricting it to the base set and the latest few sets makes it much easier to balance the game.0 -

I don't think she's screwed.
Edit: Could a restriction of PWs also possible? I ask, because they're set bound as well, aren't they?0 -

but for many players that use pig n olivia in their arlinn deck, yes, it is a major nerf. works better for me as i will face easier opponents now.0 -
Including origins with the most recent two blocks is actually an elegant solution. We should be happy they came up with something reasonable that doesn't screw new players. It actually increases the relative value of origins rares and mythics, which should be a boon for said players.
Complain all you like about locking out BFZ and SOI blocks from the recent events (for the record I'm looking forward to the reduction of some pretty ridiculous power creep from SOI particularly), but including Origins in the PvP cycle was a smart move that gives newer players with less bomb mythics a chance to compete.2 -
Rotation doesnt work in MTGPQ, the blocks are much much smaller than paper so less choice to build your own deck creatively, you can't'buy specifc cards like in paper.
I think this idea stinks. it's'a bad way to combat powercreep. it's'an easy way, but bad.1 -
I am at silver and I don't have that many mithycs. I don't have a formed opinion yet, but for sure we are going to lack several cards from bfz/SOI, not just the incredible mithycs. I am talking about the cheap black removals, Mana changers. Playing J2 without sunken hollow will be tough.
Ok, everybody is going to face the same problems, but I hope they include in AKH similar cards so we can still have viable decks after the update. And at the beginning we will be mostly building decks around origens + kld, Just after a few weeks we are going to be able to use AKH, unless we throw money into packs....0 -
It's not just against power creep. It's the only way they can keep making cards, especially staple cards like removals etc.0

We should get another free deck slot if they are going to require us to use special decks for pvp1
