Hi Everyone -
The next update for Magic: The Gathering - Puzzle Quest is live today (December 8th) and it’s a big one! Let's take a look at what's planned for inclusion.
New Features / Content
Happy 1-Year Anniversary of Magic: The Gathering – Puzzle Quest!
Holiday Update
In preparation for the Holidays, we’ve planned a handful of festive changes:
New Features / Content
Kaladesh card expansion!
The Kaladesh expansion is now live! 184 new cards lets you explore the world of Kaladesh, Chandra’s home plane. Battle with vehicles, massive constructs and harness the plane’s energy to gain the upper hand on your opponents!
This expansion features 4 brand-new mechanics: Energize, Overload, Fabricate and Crew.
Energize and Overload go hand in hand. When a card performs Energize, it adds Energy to gems on the board. By itself, Energy doesn’t do anything, but when you match gems that contain Energy, ANY card you control on the battlefield with the Overload keyword will activate and the Energy is then removed from the matched gems.
Overload comes with a number - Overload 1, 2 or 3. The number is the amount of Energized gems you need to match in a single match to trigger the ability. For example, a card with Overload 3 needs 3 Energized gems in a single match to trigger. Overload 1 only requires a single Energized gem. Note that doing a Match-4 or 5 and hitting those gems through the line counts as matching them. Overload is particularly effective when you have multiple abilities that can benefit from a single match - if you have three creatures and a support which trigger on Overload 1 and you match an Energized gem, all four of those effects would trigger.
Next up is Fabricate. When a card triggers Fabricate, it summons the listed amount of support gems that give +1/+1 to the first creature you control. Fabricate is an interesting ability as it scales very well with support counting abilities, as well as helps to make your creatures stronger.
Last but not least is Crew, which is an ability exclusive to Vehicle creatures. It works as such: When a creature with Crew is in your hand, it gains mana equal to the listed amount when a non-token creature enters the battlefield. This greatly helps ramp up your vehicles as they will always cast much faster than your other creatures if you prioritize them correctly.
New Planeswalker: Dovin Baan
We’re also introducing a brand new Planeswalker to the game: Dovin Baan!
Dovin Baan is a White and Blue Planeswalker, which is a brand-new color combination in the game. His card limitations are quite lax (5 Creatures, 5 Supports and 8 Spells at level 60) so you will be able to build interesting decks with him.
His design is based around the Kaladesh Energize -> Overload cycle, and as such all three of his abilities make ample use of it.
His first ability, Tap the Aether, is very straightforward. You’ll Energize 1 (up to 4 at max rank) gems then gain 3 (up to 6 at max rank) mana, for 9 Loyalty. With this you can ensure there’s Energized gems on the board, and you’ll also gain mana to boot to help you speed up your cards.
His second ability, Aether Siphon, creates a Support that Energizes for 1 (2 at max rank) at the beginning of your turn, and also has Overload 3 (down to 1 at max rank): Draw a card. With this Support on the board, you’ll be able to load up on Energy, as well as ensure you have plenty of card draw to fuel your duel. This ability costs 12 Loyalty.
His third ability, Aether Innovation, is very powerful. It creates a Support with Overload 1: Each of your creatures gets +3/+3 (up to +6/+6 at max rank!). This is a permanent buff, which means that your creatures on the battlefield will gain massive power every time you Overload, not to mention the other Overloads you might trigger. The ability costs 21 Loyalty, and will definitely help you win quickly and decisively!
Events
We’ve been working hard to re-balance Events to make them fair and fun for everyone. We’ve adjusted the length of events, the rewards and many secondary objectives.
In addition:
These are just a few of the brand-new events in the 1.9.0 update:
Fateful Showdown
Join the Gatewatch and try to prevent Tezzeret and his allies from confiscating all the wondrous inventions at the Grand Exhibition of the Inventors' fair. You will need the support of your Coalition for this event. Be quick! Players from across the plane are also battling to bring down Tezzeret. Similar to the Avacyn’s Madness event, you and your Coalition are ranked by the total damage dealt during the time of the event. Reach the top brackets before the event ends and earn the best rewards. The event ends when the boss's health reaches 0%.
Node 1 - Encounter 1
Dovin Baan’s Challenge
Dovin Baan, Senior Consulate Inspector, has arrived in Magic the Gathering: Puzzle Quest. Fight against Dovin Baan in a series of four challenges. Winning encounters and completing secondary objectives will earn you a wide variety of rewards.
Encounter 1
Holiday Showdown
The Holidays are fast approaching; time for a mighty brawl! Assign your strongest Planeswalker to this event’s single node. There’s only one objective - trounce your opponent. Oh, and all mana gained is doubled in the brand-new Supercharge Mode.
Old Events
Over the next few months, you’ll see a variety of classic events return to Magic the Gathering: Puzzle Quest. These events are short and sweet, lasting less than 24 hours. In addition, we’ve re-balanced many of the optional objectives.
Nodes of Power
This classic Event has a brand new set of optional objectives that will test your deck-building prowess.
Terrors in the Shadows
The final optional objectives for Terrors in the Shadows have been partially reworked. In addition, this is no longer a Coalition event, meaning that your score will not count to your Coalition’s overall score. The new optional objectives are:

Changelog (Planeswalkers & Cards)
Saheeli Rai changes
With the release of Kaladesh, we’ve tweaked Saheeli Rai a bit so that she has a bit more synergy with the card set.
Her abilities have been changed to the following:
-
- Whirlermaker: Now costs 9 Loyalty, also Energizes 1/2/3/4 gems (per rank)
-
- With the increase in Energy, the Loyalty cost also had to be slightly increased.
-
- The increase in Loyalty and the Energy cost also comes with stronger buffs to Constructs. This will let you cheaply make your constructs much stronger.
-
- The Loyalty cost remains the same
- It now fetches the next 1 (up to 4) Vehicles in your Library and puts them on the battlefield
- This is an incredibly strong ability with Vehicles. It’s strength offsets the slight loss of power with Construct Artistry and the change from Supports to Vehicles should ensure it’s always useful and gives you a very strong battlefield presence.
The rest of Saheeli Rai’s kit remains unchanged.
Menace changes
-
- It is now an evergreen.
-
- It’s functionality show now be normalized amongst all cards. This means that all cards with Menace work exactly the same (this was an internal issue with some cards). It now also shows an evergreen icon.
-
- Creatures with Vigilance now also count in the “2 or more creatures” calculation. This means that one Defender creature and one Vigilance creature now block creatures with Menace, whereas before the creature would be unblockable.
- Disabled creatures with Vigilance, Defender or Reach no longer count for Menace, which means if your opponent had 2 Defenders but one was Disabled, Menace will trigger and the attacking creature will be unblockable.
System Improvements
-
- Improvement of the latency issues when starting / ending an event.
- Improvement of the Profile Management & Messaging tool for Customer Support.
Bug Fixes

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!
SAHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!0 -
Exciting.
Thanks for the card gallery!!0 -
Events, an expansion and deals!
This is going to be a long 24 hour wait.0 -
Why make the events non-coalition? Even more impetus to keep slumming it in Silver/Gold. Why oh why did I go to Platinum?
No mention of story or making the First Strike (OGW) a story mode we can play through. Thanks for listening D3/Hibernum!0 -

Her abilities have been changed to the following:
Whirlermaker: Now costs 9 Loyalty, also Energizes 1/2/3/4 gems (per rank)
Construct Artistry: Now costs 12 Loyalty. Removes 2 Energy from the board (this is required for the ability to activate) and each Construct you control gets +3/+3, up to +6/+6 at rank 4
Artifacts Assemble has been renamed to Vehicular Assembly
The Loyalty cost remains the same
It now fetches the next 1 (up to 4) Vehicles in your Library and puts them on the battlefield
Ok the change to her first ability's loyalty cost is fine, lets just hope adding energy doesn't increase the time it takes to use the ability by even more.
Second ability sure whatever
Third ability... what in the what? She creates contructs, buffs contructs, and then for her ultimate she fetches... not constructs.0 -
one question.... how are you going to release Thalia? she is an event reward... she should still be0
-
Yes... Saheeli's ultimate was fine. But if it had to be tweaked then why vehicles specifically... why not constructs?0
-
Poor Saheeli. Poor people who haven't got to use her in her perfected form.0
-
Way to ruin another Planeswalker.0
-
Saheeli is ruined. =/
What a bait and switch.0 -
i'll reserve further judgement for saheel's changes until i play her with the new cards and mechanics. She might have improved... you never know0
-
Energize 4 is a big number. We await to see if Energize/Overload is another Ingest/Process.0
-
What does overload 2 and 3 mean, with that description of overload? Do you need to match multiple energized gems? Do you match one energized gem and it randomly removes others?
I assume fabricating creates unique supports each time, like clues, given that some cards fabricate 2. How many shields does each one have? Do they change color like clues?0 -
After looking through the card gallery, it looks like there's really only one vehicle worth fetching with Saheeli's third ability; Skysovereign, Consul Flagship. If I was a gambling man, I'd wager it will be an exclusive that costs $30. There is one rare vehicle that doesn't look bad but to make the most of her abilities, you really only want one vehicle in the deck anyway since you are limited to 3 creatures on the battlefield and her first ability already uses one of those spots. Fetching 4 constructs would be too strong with the Gearhulks and all the other new constructs. Why not just leave the ability alone and let it summon supports?0

Just my opinion, but I think this means that she is probably coming to the vault for crystals at some point and had to get tuned down. Right now she is a fun novelty to see as an opponent and the AI doesn't play her to her full potential. If she stayed "S" tier and didn't get tuned there would have been a Saheeli plague at all brackets of play.
I do think that it sucks for folks who won her though.0 -
I guess that's the end of power creep, then.0
-
Fetching vehicles is a bit of a disappointment. It already looks like it's a binary "Do you have a sky-sovereign mythic?" ability as vehicles are a bit limited and look mostly lackluster.0
-
I can guarantee to you guys that Saheeli Rai is still very strong. Energize 4 is very good on top of making Thopters, her 2nd ability is stronger (and there's a lot more Constructs in Kaladesh) and her third is absurd with the right vehicles (Sovereign Skyship being fetched to the battlefield 4 times is very, VERY strong).
As an aside we decided to do some changes to Saheeli Rai because we wanted her to have more synergy with the Kaladesh set - when we initially did her limited release, the Kaladesh cards hadn't been designed, nor had the abilities, and we anticipated Vehicles to be something different than what the ended up being, so fetching 4 Supports made sense. Now that Vehicles are out and have a much simpler design than what we were initially thinking, and since the ability was designed for Vehicles in mind, repurposing it for Vehicles made sense. Energy is also a huge component of Kaladesh, and as such granting her abilities that create and consume energy was a no-brainer.Rootbreaker wrote:What does overload 2 and 3 mean, with that description of overload? I assume fabricating creates unique supports each time, like clues, given that some cards fabricate 2. How many shields does each one have? Do they change color like clues?
Here's the low-down on Overload. Essentially, when you match gems, if Energized gems are destroyed as a result of the match (either a standard match-3, or part of the line on a match-4, for example), each card with Overload will activate as long as the amount of Energized gems matched is equal or higher to the Overload cost. This sounds complicated, but is in essence very simple:
1- I have a card with "Overload 1: Your opponent takes 1 damage". I do a match-3 with one gem that is Energized. The card with Overload 1 triggers, and deals 1 damage to my opponent. The same would apply if I matched 2 or 3 Energized gems, by the way - the number next to Overload is the minimum amount of Energized gems that must be matched to trigger the ability.
2- I have a card with "Overload 2: Draw 6 cards". I do a match-4 with 1 Energized gem contained in the match and 1 in the line the match-4 clears. Since 2 Energized gems were destroyed as the result of a single match, the card with Overload 2 triggers, and I draw 6 cards. Each card with Overload 1 also triggers.
In more technical terms, Energize and Overload are similar to "Activate X" abilities, but instead of the ability being tied to a single gem, each Overload card is tied to all your Energized gems.
As for comparisons to Ingest/Process, we learned a LOT with BFZ with these types of abilities that impact the board, and we feel the Energy mechanic is better designed and integrated. There's a lot more cards with Energize and Overload, a lot of the Overload cards are powerful, and the Planeswalkers take full advantage of Energy (through generation, scaling and consumption). Kaladesh is a very fun set with a lot of interlocking mechanics that make a lot of sense together.
As for Fabricate, it works similarly to clues where it summons non-stacking supports. Each support has one shield, and they scale with Support-scaling abilities (like Tezzeret's ability that scales with Supports). They attach to any color.0 -
Does a cascade count towards overload 2 or 3?
Let's say you match 3 gems including 1 energized, and the resulting fall ends up with a match 3 including 2 energized. With that trigger overload 3?
What about breaking the energy gem matches over extra turns from match 5s?0 -

That's very good to hear.0
