I've been monitoring how many people have been attacking me for a couple of hours I worked myself up to #1 in the prologue danger room. I don't see any messages that I have been attacked. I think to myself "What Luck!" I decide to break my shield early and try my hand at getting past 2000. I see that I'm able to select shielded individuals in the 2300-2400 point range. No sooner than I do so I'm blindsided by thewreck (you can see him on the screenshots in my previous post). I'm making average to awesome progress but I'm slammed 7 times in the time it takes for me to beat 3 opponents. I'm thinking that's too quick, considering his lineup. 85 Ares, 115 Magneto, 125 Hulk. I attack him, he attacks back. I manage to recover to a bit higher than before and shield up. Then I get notifications that I've been attacked by more individuals.

I'm thinking that he already beat me several times before I broke my shield, the messages queued up, and processed after I released my shield, resulting in many lost points. I was lucky to grab a shield at 1640 (a bit higher than I was). He only attacked me once after I put up my shield and he hasn't bothered me since.

    Maybe I suck
    Maybe he's awesome
Maybe the server is calculating things funny, and updates are delayed.
Maybe he's burning through Hero Points to buy heal packs, and isn't bothering with a spider-man heal.

Maybe Magnetic Translocation is too powerful. I say Bagneto icon_evil.gif

One interesting thing. In these types of tournaments I've never encountered anyone on my leaderboard. I think this is understood to be normal. I fought #1 on my leaderboard, Tmaine.

Thereck has been winning questionably for the last couple of weeks. There is strong suspicion of foul play.

Thereck was in my Hunt bracket. Always had over 2k more then second place. And always has about 2600 points in tournaments. But he could be a real player with a massive bunch of luck.

    But who cares .... icon_e_smile.gif
  • I don't know about the longer duration shields, but at least the 3 hours one is good for me. If you get a high place in the tourney, it still pays for itself. Can't say anything about the longer duration ones, but they look really expensive.

In my brachet from the top 10 guys we have 9 shielded.

I'm actually in that bracket as well.

I usually start playing quite a few hours before events tend to finish, since I kind of think it puts you into more casual brackets. Since the hardcore players probably will start to play closely when it finishes or right from the start.

I still use shields, but less than when they first came out. Sometimes I used to shield up and then go for it for a while and then shield back up again.

I just hate that D3's changes incentivize NOT playing the game. IceIX once said the devs didn't enjoy that tanking seemed to be a necessary strategy. But they really should be concerned that "don't play the game until 5 hours left in a tournament" is the strategy of choice right now.
  • I voted no shields in other thread, but succumbed argh to using one last time (will try at least) as I managed to climb 4th for Wolverine cover. I did not get yellow last time so I really want it now. I hope my cushion is enough.

I see your point, but as a correction i started playing when there was about 13 hours left on the event, not 5 hours.

It's true that you will get an easier bracker if you "dont play the game until 13 hours left in a tournament" (at least in this case), but actually it kinda makes sense.
There was The Hunt : Florida and The Hunt : Savage Lands. Those took some time for me to complete ,and for some i required med packs, which again means more waiting. Since it took me 2 hours or so, i went to sleep, and started playing Rage and Ruin as i woke up.

Obviously, this means that the bracket i will play in will be a bracket with people just like me. With rosters that actually take quite some time to clear the hunt, with people that wait for medpacks and that can't play to many hours a day. Those people will of course not be able to get a really high amount of points.

Of course, that means that people with good rosters, that clear events really fast, don't have any downtime, and have very good 3 stars characters will start their Rage and Ruin event much earlier, since they have nothing to do. And since they are better than me, of course they will be able to climb up to 1400 (let's say) instead of 700. So if you are in their bracket, of course 700 wont mean a high position.

Also, i think this is an etiquette thing. Pretty much anytime you ask for some advice, the people with really good teams will tell you to not rush in, just take things one at a time. The guys with amazing rosters usually start playing really fast, to avoid having people with one or two star rosters in their bracket.

In the end, if you think about it, if a guy that can make 1200 was in my brachet, he would be the first. Would that be fair? yes and no. Yes because he is better than any on my bracket, but no because he is not supposed to be compared with the people in my brachet, since probably he haves a much better roster, and he knows the game a lot better than us.

Oh thats still the point of shields, they just want to make more money off the idea. Having shields become self sustainable like they were previous to these events was bad for business. Raising the prices and dropping the HP rewards was a great idea from a business stand point.

    1. They are able to deplete the supply of HP.
    2. The amount of HP gained is not enough to allow for sustainable shielding unless you can place in the top 10 and only use a 3hr shield or no shield.
    3. More players will buy HP to use shields.

The only reason this happened was because they saw the great success of shields and decided they wanted more profit off of it. It has 0 to do with maintaining balance in pvp.

Yeah, I have been attacked by him too when I have had a much stronger team and he manages to beat me 2x in the time it takes me to finish a retaliation against him, once I could see being possible, but there is no way he could do it consistently which he did when he was in my MMR. I think there is something up too.
  • Could these fast people be due to steam vs mobile difference?
  • Could these fast people be due to steam vs mobile difference?
I also wonder if they can have multiple instances of the game running.

I do not think I will be using any more shields. They just burned me hard.

Was playing in the last hour of the Ares event and three fights in a row I won like 20 Ranking points and during the fight was defeated by 2 people and lost 40 points. I was hemorrhaging points...

Buy a shield to protect me in last 30 minutes of round sense I was high enough to get 1 Patch Cover and KNEW that if I bought health packs and kept fighting I would lose points overall...

Put up shield... Was only attacked one more time the whole 30 minutes.... Slipped to under the Patch cover in last minute of the event... Won Storm Covers I already have.

Excuse my french but **** shields.

    And yes I am mad.

I don't know. It's pretty common for online poker players and mmorpgs.

I guess I don't get it. How did using a shield directly affect your lower-than-desired ranking?

I play on both Steam and Mobile. To my knowledge you cannot run both at the same time, when I log into my mobile it logs me out of Steam MPQ and vice versa.
  • i'm not using shields because i've had a 5/5/3 punisher for 2 weeks and all they keep giving out in events is punishers. and oh look divine champions ... the reward? more punishers.

    the shield not-using will continue.
