New feature: Shields

In my bracket, I have 824 points. I have purchased the 24 hour shield. I have had a lot of people attack me when I was at 710 [edit: I tried out the 3 hour shield]. Looks like some people attacked me multiple times. I ran into a problem I haven't run into in a while. I can't find anyone with more than 9 points.
Unless a lot of other people shield w/ similar points I won't be surprised if that doesn't change.
Why? Because while you may not be losing points, everyone else still is. And people aren't attacking only people with shields. So everyone who isn't shielded continues to be inexorably dragged down toward 400 points, even while you stay a juicy target.
But as we all know, it doesn't matter if you can get 40 points off one match if five other people each hit you for 25 points a piece.
I'm still going to wait until the weekend before deciding, but the current system remains broken.0 -

i assume the scoring is still semi broken from that statement?0 -
It appears scoring is still broken. I was attacking anyone worth more than 15 points to get to 824. I just wanted to see what would happen if I scored high and shielded myself. Would the scoring get higher?
Consider I was attacking anyone with more than 15 points... well, maybe 13-14 points if I had a streak of single digits. I basically took points from players I wouldn't ordinarily attack. When they retaliate I'm expecting them to get good points. At least that's what I'm thinking. Then if they keep cycling through opponents they can nail me two more times. That's gotta be good for 120 points per player and I attacked a lot of players. Even if players don't use the shield feature, the persistent players ought to be able to wring out those points and bring up the overall top score. At least that's what I'm hoping.0 -
Assuming no new players enter the amount of points in a system is fixed. It does not leak out a hole somewhere, so there is no inexorable drag toward lower points. Anyway if you work out the math, let's say hitting a guy with 800 points generates 40 points. People start out at 400 points, and there are 100 players loosely affiliated in a MMR bracket.
To bring everyone's score to 600 points requires 200 * 100 = 20000 points. Each attack on the shielded guy at 800 generates 40 points. So after the 800 point guy was attacked 500 times, the average of the group would be 600.
This shows getting points is a group effort, and in particularly everyone has to attack the shielded guy as often as possible. It'd probably take more than one guy to bring the whole bracket's score up, and someone has to be the first guy to volunteer. Suppose 10 guys shield themselves at 800, then the remaining 90 have to hit them about 6 times each to bring the whole bracket's points to 600. You probably get 30 points per hit now, so now you need 1.33 times the games, so that's another 8 hits on the same 10 shielded guys. At this point, the group's average will hit 800, which is certainly high enough for the shielded guys (or anyone else) to make an attempt at the 1000+ range stuff. This is clearly workable over the period of 3 days which the average tournament lasts. Yes a new guy would drag it down some, but he's also another guy that can hit the shielded guys. One key thing to remember is that people should be focusing their hits on the shielded guys, who almost certainly will not retaliate. It's a good policy in general to attack someone who almost certainly will not retaliate, so shouldn't take long for people to catch on.0 -
Bugpop -- are you getting retaliation targets for people who are attacking you?0

Yes, Just now
539 ForrestBorg got 42 points from me. I lost +0
Edit:
684 common 35 (probably a retaliation)
719 common 32
751 common 30
Edit:
781 common 28 (I wonder if it's two retaliations and two normal attacks, maybe they got lucky)
Edit:
809 common 26 (whoah)0 -
Oh, if you're asking if I'm getting the red retaliation option. Nope
derp0 -
I got up to #3 in my bracket fairly easily... Top score is maybe 460?
Only one person in top 10 is shielded, and at #6.
Maybe it's still early for shields or my bracket isn't indicative of what's going on.0 -
-
Actually if you're trying to hit progression rewards, it is never too early for shields. The only way scores can get propped up is by shields. Of course, the question is who is going to be the guy doing the shielding to prop up the entire bracket's score? As people get closer to juicy rewards, you should seriously consider putting a shield to prop up everyone else's score, so that you can actually hit people later to hit those 3 star covers.0

I'm seeing attacks from people who have nearly reached 1000.0

Zathrus, I have to say I definitely noticed a tweak. I just got to 1004 and am calling it a night. Not gonna shield so I expect an onslaught by morning but the fact that I got to 1000 is amazing since I just started today during lunch and got halfway and then powered thru tonight for about 2 hours. I couldn't get past 700 without killing myself a week ago. I just want top 15 so I hope I dont lose 600 pts by morning. Not saying its fixed but I noticed a larger pool until I hit about 900 mark.0

I couldn't even break 800 without getting hammered for -100 every 10 minutes. It's 2am on the east coast.
Pointless. Hopefully the next 2 day tourney has reasonable scoring.0 -
It might take awhile before we know, but I'm curious if you still gain points if someone yields to you while shielded.0

The same. I reached 1100 for the first time ever only to be rewarded with a red IM40 that is useless to me as anything except 25hp. I'm going to see where I am come morning and just plunk down the 200hp for a day's shield if it looks like I will still finish in the top 5.0 -
That is what I hoping. I pull a small one so I can get a few hours sleep and not lose 100 points. I may do the day one so can in 2-5 and all 3 spidey covers. Right rankef 1. Gotta love it.0

I just hope they remembered to lock your MMR while being shielded otherwise I see it as quite exploitable.0

I just hope this isn't the 'fix that required a client patch' IceIX was talking about, and that fixing the scoring system is still on the table0
