My only other problem with him is that he's a 4*, so it'll take me about a year to make him a playable 5* character (or more, since I'm already focusing on someone).
I get that's a problem for every 4* character release, but it does put a dampener on me tinkering with different team builds.

I think if we play him with Beard Cap and red Guardian, we should get a special beard bonus.
Like a bonus to rugged manliness.

Some 4 stars are pretty good right off the bat. Like Sidewinder and Polaris. Fingers crossed he will be as well, I have always been a big DD fan (due to Miller's run)

Hope somebody can explain what happened with the updated rewards.
I understood that an ascended Daredevil 3* would give the rewards of 2 non-ascended ones. An unascended DD 3* at max level gives 1 cover and 800 shards, but the ascended rewards for 2 merged max level 3* gives 2 covers and 1500 (instead of 1600 shards). Is this correct?
It worked correctly for the secondary feeder (Echo getting 1200 shards for the ascended)And why is hunter now a part of the non-changed feeder info?

I actually do miss the flavour text on the abilities. It would certainly help here explain the philosophy a bit.
"Daredevil senses an opportunity. He pulls his punch, lulling his enemies into a false sense of safety, waiting for the the right moment to spring his trap.

....He also grabs his teammates and holds them back too, just a bit, to better ensure the trap springing in the future"

Daredevil actively hinders his allies by arguing that Kevin Bacon wasn't in footloose. Causing detrimental effects as we need neuter the leapfrog support but don't want him to have the advantage so we come up with this bizarre scenario.
I'm trying to find a good spin on his red and that's the best idea I've come up with.

4* Daredevil (King of Safety Co-Ordination): "Elektra, together we will fight crime in Hells Kitchen and sweep the streets clear of crime but well, I wont lie, I've been looking up health & safety and there are a few minor things we might need to tweak. Like what? Well for starters...punching. It seems it might not be OK for us to be doing that quite as much as we do, so if we just tone that down a bit? Also...rooftops. We don't have a permit for working on rooftops, so, uhm, we have to stop that. Just for now of course! What else? Ah yes, do you have your high-visibility jacket on?"

At the start of the fight Daredevil has fun hulk punch gloves and he brought enough for his pals. Daredevil and team mates do less match damage but you will get to hear fun "hulk smash" sounds with every punch.

To be fair to Daredevil it must be hell on his super hearing to have all the bad guys moaning and groaning after he and his mates batter them, so I can see how he would want to tone it down a bit for his own health.

I will attempt to justify his red:
for new 4* players, it can be a decent "build up" power. At 270, each purple is 85 damage x 3 = 255 for a match 3. His red passive reduces that to 191, so a loss of 64 damage. It then lays a trap that does 730 damage, over 10x the damage lost. Then it triggers for any power fired (and his are cheap).
If he is the focus on the team, he is not costing anything and building up for the take down.
If he is paired with anyone stronger than him, he actively hurts. so really, as @bluewolf said, he's a raging narcissist and has to be the one doing the thing

He also reduces his allies' match damage.Apologies for the mixup. I was originally told that the reduction AND ability proc was to DD only, but the live version is working as intended since the text uses "you" and not specifically calling out DD.
