Top 10-15 were hard to rank
    Top 2-9 were even worse

I put C Mags as first but after that it gets really competitive. Sentry is the ultimate defensive specialist but can be a liability on long term offense. With spidey's nerf, OBW is the healer in town and comes with good offense and ap denial. Hood is truly underrated on defense. BP can kill teams in 12 ap. Patch can OHKO hulk and turn the tide. How valuable is self healing now among 3 stars? Everyone has a lot to offer so its up to a ton of interpretation.

    Also, some small side plots...
    - How high up do you put modern storm who can fit in 2 or 3 star teams even if she gets tinykittied on defense?
    - Spiderman... nuff said
    - How many 3 stars do you put behind Ares?
    - IW and X-Force are hard due to my lack of playing them at max level.
  • I honestly didn't find it that big a deal to go through and rank them all. I made one pass, going "You're top...You're low....You're middling", and then a second pass, starting with yelena and bagman and working up. Each successive pair, I'd ask, "Would I rather have a maxed X or a maxed Y? If X was better, then I'd bump it up a rank and continue with the next pair.

Took me ten, fifteen minutes, most of that just thinking about choices.
  • I have good news and bad news.

Good news: we're up to 144 responses!

Bad news: SurveyMonkey's free version only reports a maximum of 100 responses, so all the responses after #100 are basically lost. icon_e_sad.gif Since I'm not terribly excited about paying $26 to upgrade (that's 4100 hp I could have instead, thank you very much), I've closed the survey a couple days early. Sorry to everyone whose input won't be counted this time around; I'll try and find something better for next time.

Good news: this means I can get started on writeups!

It sucks that this happened, but it's great that that many people responded. I guess we can get results a lot earlier now, which isn't a bad thing icon_e_smile.gif

Could you open another free survey with exactly the same questions and then just combine / average the two sets of results?

I think they weren't saved since he said that all responses after hitting 100 are lost.

Yah. Obviously you would need a note on here or the top of the thread or somewhere. Obviously some will not reappear though might get some people willing to do it again.

It would be nice to know if my vote didn't get saved in the first place.
Is a 100 people batch large enough? What was it last time?
  • Mean averages rankings of 100 results is plenty, given that there is only one actual question. If there were more questions to segment the results by then 100 would be on the small side.
  • I would love to know how people are placing falcon ...

For future surveys, I think the one with google forms and google drive doesn't have that limitation and should be gratis (free).

Who the heck ranks a 1* at #1? Are we sure it wasn't someone mixing up OBW and MBW again?
Positive. But that's all I'm saying about it until voting closes. icon_e_smile.gif
If it's not a mistake then it must be mStorm. I admit she can be a one-woman army with a good board on desert but it's still nuts that someone would rank her at #1.
  • The survey monkey is reached it's limit. Hope the people voting knew what they were talking about. And I have 42 characters not 41, am I crazy or something.

Do you have Fury? I don't think he was on the list, so that's probably why.

But none of those compare to the hardest character to rank, who so far has votes at a whopping 33 different positions!

I bet it's Spiderman, it's too soon after the nerf for people to have really figured out where he belongs.
  • Bah, that's what I get for slacking on this one. Silly, SurveyMonkey. Totally missed out on the vote this time. Oh well, I guess there's always next time.
  • curious to see where my personal list ranks.

A lot of people have different opinions on these characters. To me its very much about match ups and the team. A character like widow isnt good in a 1v1 match against any 141in the game. But on a team she can be a beast. See her match for 1800 with 6 patch tiles out. Because its a team game and she can help a 141 deliver a kill quickly or steal and prevent damage, a 2 star ended up in my top ten.

I picked L Thor number 1. Not because hes S tier. In fact I think Mag, Sentry and Patch have more of that capability to just roll teams on offense in an S tier type of way. But the reason I ranked Thor ahead of them is that he has no flaws at all. You could argue his ap cost is high for yellow and green but red and yellow both generate ap typically. Hes top 3 on D in the game and that's again where he has now flaws in his game. On offense hes a top 5 guy, on defense hes a top 3 guy. Only other character you can say that about really. Sentry might be better at both though. Time will tell. So even though he's not broken hes still the best character you can have on your roster at max level because he's so well rounded.
  • The problem with putting characters in tiers is twofold. One, it isn't very interesting, because most of us have a pretty good idea of what the tiers look like, so such a ranking doesn't provide us with any new information. Two, if you put characters in tiers and then rank them, that's exactly as much work as just ranking them, unless I put them in tiers for you. And if I do that, then we don't get interesting results like the guy who ranked a 1* character #1.

To me the tiers give us information about the state of a character. B tier generally means that character is good. But in this game you might have 8 characters there. So to me it just shows that character ranked at 8 isnt really much different (in terms of needing a change) from the one ranked at 16. If you are ranking them you just end up with data that suggests that HT is somehow much worse than Psylocke. Which IMO just isnt true. They are in the same grouping.

Doesn't mischiefmaker already do this during his results posts?

    This is from March's edition:

    #30-35: Blech
    #23-29: Meh
    #17-22: Bridging the gap
    #11-16: Best supporting actor/actress
#5-10: The best of the rest
    #1-4: The Best There Is
  • Hey folks, quick update. Been a bit busy trying to figure out how to deal with all the data and actually get started on writeups, so haven't had time to respond to people's questions and suggestions. (Note to self: maybe cut Demiurge a little slack in the future; communication is hard!) So here's a quick roundup of replies, along with a little teaser at the end:

    - The idea to open a new survey and manually combine the results had not occurred to me. While a good suggestion, it basically doubles the amount of work I need to do to import the data from SurveyMonkey, which was quite a lot.
    - The data beyond #100 was not actually lost -- I just can't access it unless I pay $26 for it. Again, apologies to those whose votes were not counted (including yours, locked).
    - Last time we had 40 responses and the first round we only had 12, so 100 should be plenty.
    - I tried out google forms with google drive, but I can't figure out how to create the form in a way that is easy to answer, gives me the data I want, and validates against errors. If someone has experience with another survey site, or better yet, has a paid SurveyMonkey account I can borrow, I'm open to suggestions.

    OK, now for the teaser!

Since we have so much more data than we have had in the past, I'm experimenting with coming up with cool ways to visualize it. Here's something you'll likely see in the writeups:
