The funny thing is, they said they're going to lose revenue on this (people buying more efficient packs, but also I suspect from not wanting to spend in general), AND it makes it harder for F2P players to progress. It's a lose-lose situation. Well done devs, well done.

I highly doubt they actually thought they were going to lose revenue on this. What business actively tries to lose revenue? It was obviously a thin excuse that nobody is buying. They should be trying to entice players to spend money, not force them to. What they are doing is experimenting with how far they can squeeze the player base before revenue actually drops and they they will likely scale back a bit. It might be too late though if that is the strategy.

I want them to make money so they can continue to make content for this great game! I think the player base has already given many great ideas on how to make money. Moving back to guaranteed cover packs, iso/hp sales, add ons for alliances, etc. would entice rather than try to be heavy handed. No one wants to feel forced to spend money, but if you dangle a nice enough carrot, many of us will (and have) drop some cash to further our enjoyment.

Personally, I never thought I would spend in a F2P game, but my wife and I became so addicted to this game that we bought in. Now, however, I'm very reluctant to spend anymore. I'm a stubborn person and if I feel I'm being forced to do something, you will lose me.
  • Thankfully 1 have 22 spaces now, meaning I'll only have to get a double slot once and be out of this bundled slot scheme. Unless they say they're bundling all the slots in the next patch because people liked it better that way.

Seriously, whose bright idea was this?

Ice stated it. I believe it. If they wanted people to spend $5 instead of $2, they could have just eliminated the $2 option.

People buy slots when they need space for a new character. Getting a new hero already feels "impactful," and any slot that doesn't have a hero in it is just wasted spending.

I'm guessing your metrics showed a significant amount of players stopping at 11 or 14 roster slots? Come on, I understand that grouping roster slots is a change that will likely get d3p a little more revenue while having little to no negative impact on the majority of players but don't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining.
Actually, we're expecting this change to have a minor *negative* affect on revenue. One of the major reasons we made this change is so that players don't get into the mindset that 1.99 purchases are the way to move forward in the game. It works, but it's not at all efficient. We get quite a lot of reports from players that we nickle and dime them early on in the game but feel forced to pay anyway and almost invariably, they are players that spent 20 bucks in 1.99 purchases when 15 in 5s and a bit of saving some HP in the same amount of playtime would have served that player *much* better. There's something psychological about getting into a rut in spending on the same pack over and over because it's familiar. We want to lessen that impact some. At the same time, eliminating the 1.99 purchase altogether not only sends the wrong message (lesser paying players need not apply) but also doesn't account for those users that *do* spend a tiny bit here and there.

Straight from the serpent's tongue. Highlights are mine. I literally LOL'd the first time I read that. How extremely patronizing, let alone inaccurate. I would have respected a more honest answer about how they want to create a paywall with early roster slots to weed out those who are not willing to pay any money, while being able to identify and target those that do. It's like they want us to forget they are in the business of making money....except every recent change in the game has been a drive to create more money. Do they think they are the only people out there that understand how businesses work? Don't they understand that some of their players run businesses themselves?

The sooner this change is rolled back the better will be its damage control,i have 2 steam friends that recently started played this game they had a low lv roster both were clearing the prologue and having fun until they hit the roster paywall and just deleted the game, this is what the roster paywall is doing, you are not going to get 5 bucks new customers you are going to lose them.

When you walk into a bar and want a glass of whiskey the bartender doesnt force you to buy the whole bottle just to drink at the bar.

Its not a bad idea to sell bundle of slots but the single purchase option should be available as well.

Chase off potential customers by encouraging large purchases too soon? Great idea. Somebody's going to see this in their annual review.
  • It takes a really long time to gain HP in this game so having to wait to get 500 before I can expand further is definitely not appealing.

I wonder how much would they get if they lowered HP packs prices and started displaying some unobtrusive advertisements...
