Get the admins to install better captcha and antinspam plug ins. Phpb is hardly a new forum system and there are lots out there. VBulletin is far better but hey ho, work with what you have.

As forum moderators it is what you signed up to do unfortunately. I have modded on the Official Nintendo Magazine forums and Blue Bytes The Settlers Online (both UK) so you have my sympathies. If the admins will not give you the tools to do the role effectively then you can either just get on with it or quit. Quitting will only work if it is a mass walk out though. About 7 of us quit ONM at the same time.

Pasa's idea is great and I think that it, plus some of the suggestions in the link found in my post from the suggestions forum would deter a lot of the spam.
