3.8 Release Notes

Core Set 2020 has arrived!

Core Set 2020 arrives in the 3.8 update, complete with over 200 cards, 5 new Planeswalkers, two new game mechanics, 2 new events, and more!

The Card Gallery will be up to check out soon!

General Changes

Vanguard Packs
Starting with Core Set 2020, all Mythic+ Vanguard Packs will reward non-duplicate Vanguard cards. There are no changes to the War of the Spark Vanguard Packs.

New Colorless Icon
To avoid confusion when using a card with "Protection From" a color, the Colorless icon now has a new look!

Before

After

New Planeswalker Feedback

Now whenever an effect gives Hexproof and/or Prevent Damage to a Planeswalker, there will be visual feedback showing a special glow over their avatar. The respective Evergreen icons will be displayed next to their portrait, as well.

In addition, whenever an effect increases a Planeswalker's mana bonus, a small gem of that color will appear over its portrait, showing the increased value.

New Planeswalkers

Ajani, Strength of the Pride

"Ajani's beliefs have evolved over the years. When his spark first manifested (over the loss of his brother) he believed that channeling his rage towards avenging his fallen loved one was the correct path. He let his seething rage drive him forward, ignoring how his actions affected those around him.

However, spending time with Elspeth morphed these views and, ultimately with her death, showed him that his fury wasn't the correct path to inner peace."

Max Level Stats

(White) Support Card (3) - Token
"Whenever you would gain life, this support gains X shield and you gain X life instead, where X is half the amount of life you would gain. Then, if this support has 12 or more shield, exile this support and every opposing creature and Artifact support."

Chandra, Awakened Inferno

"Right after her first planeswalk, Chandra has come to live on a plane named Regatha, where she has been studying at the Keral Keep monastery in an attempt to learn better self-control and mastery of her powers.

The monastery was founded ages ago around the beliefs of another fire-wielding planeswalker, Jaya Ballard. Her quotes and teachings are the core of the Keep's beliefs, championing personal freedom and individual choice over all other things, as long as one was not infringing on another's rights."

Mu Yanling, Sky Dancer

"Amid the sounds of roaring beasts, a crushing wave devoured Mu Yanling's village when she was a child, and she barely escaped with her life. By pure chance, a wanderer named Li Shan was nearby. He saved Mu Yanling and took her in.

He raised the girl as family after she lost her own, and his courage always made her feel safe. As they wandered together, she grew stronger, and resolved to be ready if another calamity struck."

Sorin, Imperious Bloodlord

"Thousands of years ago, famine forced the alchemist Edgar Markov into dark experiments. Making a deal with the demon Shilgengar for the secrets of sangromancy, Edgar created a blood ritual which granted agelessness and the ability to subsist on blood.

When Edgar anointed his grandson, Sorin, with the same vampiric state, the trauma of the transformation caused Sorin's planeswalker spark to ignite."

Max Level Stats

Improved Markov's Legacy
(Black) Support Card(4) - Token
"At the beginning of the combat, move the first Vampire card from your hand to the battlefield, under your control. While this support is on the board, your Vampires get +2/+2 for each of the following Evergreens they have: Deathtouch, Lifelink and Flying."

Vivien, Arkbow Ranger

"Now an experienced interplanar wanderer, Vivien has a new mission: destroy the cancer of civilization. Skalla's fate solidified her belief that either you stand with her-or you are her enemy.

She wields a weapon of immense predatory power that intensifies with each passing day. One day soon-against the perfect enemy-she will unleash its awesome power and restore the natural order to the Multiverse."

I got the impression that M20 will have Vanguard's too.

@LakeStone at which levels for the planeswalkers are these mana/hp changes made?

For clarity: I'm not asking about the max value; I'm asking which level "bonuses" were adjusted.

I'm very glad that the planeswalker balancing mentioned last winter/Christmas is starting to come to fruition. Still plenty to go though. Though Kaya and V2 weren't even really out at that time. At least Arlin isn't useless in Standard and BW is a little bit viable with Kaya's ult rework.

Also glad to see card rebalancing (ie making unplayable legacy cards slightly playable). I can understand not adjusting anything in Standard, since we'll be at our biggest card pool in, well, ever.

Perhaps we could see some underused cards from Ixalan & Dominaria buffed when they enter Legacy?

Yeah this is a pretty poor change. It's weird cause this is a pretty solid update overall.

That's a lot of new mono PWs for a game which really doesn't encourage you to play them. I hope plenty of people are paying cash money for those otherwise it seems like a bit of a waste of time.
I play mono all the time. Maybe you should try it. Used Nissa 1 in TDW. She was perfect and really stretched my imagination.

    @Brigby -

Will Mu Yanling's T1 Lvl 4 ability be able to target Hexproof creatures or will they still be protected from this PW ability?

Since it removes all Evergreens, it seems a valid question, even if I would guess they still are protected.

P.S. Please make WAR Vanguard packs non-dupe next update, or craftable with orbs.

I'm still not, and advise others not to as well, opening those while they drop dupes, yet cost pinks. Some of the best ones IMO are at rare, yet are effectively locked off, at least for anyone who wisely spends their resources.

No news on the coalition score bug. That really needs fixing, it’s not great when you can’t track how your team mates are doing.

There are no changes to the War of the Sparks Vanguard Packs.

I'm confused. Aren't all Vanguards War of Spark?

"Starting with Core Set 2020, all Mythic+ Vangu ard Packs will reward non-duplicate Vanguard cards."

I believe what this sentence is trying to say that there will be more vanguards and that those future vanguards will be in non-dupe packs and that WAR Vanguard packs are exempt from this change and may produce a dupe.

Kaya and Arlinn had a nice bump in their changes. I don't have Arlinn yet and I may just get her in the future if I have nothing better to buy with my crystals.

The new PWs look like a ton of fun!

The flash adds are a pleasant surprise.

That's a lot of new mono PWs for a game which really doesn't encourage you to play them. I hope plenty of people are paying cash money for those otherwise it seems like a bit of a waste of time.

Depends on the matches and their objectives. I have found that mono planeswalkers often excel in many ways over their multi-colored counterparts in many events. In many cases their loyalties alone free up deck space for better efficiency that otherwise would be wasted in a multi-color situation trying to achieve the same results. But I get it,  not everyone is comfortable with the challenge and strategies of a mono-walker as they require some finesse and skills to manage. I have the most fun when using Mono-walkers for that very reason, I have to think and plan my steps as I play out the match, that's what MTG is all about, no?

I play mono all the time. Maybe you should try it. Used Nissa 1 in TDW. She was perfect and really stretched my imagination.
By not buying bad PWs, tho, I save a lot of time grinding, and I can play other games which I find stretch my imagination even more!
One person's bad PW is another's favorite. I personally feel a purchase depends on the players and their style of play IMHO. Multi-colored PWs can be horrible too... Gosh knows I've gotten a few and I am not a fan of B1 at all But I absolutely love B2.

    @Brigby -

Will Mu Yanling's T1 Lvl 4 ability be able to target Hexproof creatures or will they still be protected from this PW ability?

Since it removes all Evergreens, it seems a valid question, even if I would guess they still are protected.
Doubtful seeing that the loyalty ability requires a target for it to engage the second half of the effect.

I'm not sure what the flash adds are meant to achieve?
I want to say "surprise transformation triggers."  Werewolves transform into their more dangerous form if 2 or more cards are played in a turn - flash would allow you to play them on your opponent's turn, to help trigger a transforming werewolf!
