I tend to assume I need to cast no matter what it says. Then I'm presently surprised if other methods work. Of course, the surprise part is ridiculous and needs to be fixed. Also, Hostage Taker no longer puts tokens into your hand, so my token Saheeli Switcheroo deck didn't help in figuring out the costs of tokens…

When bounced tokens were a thing, most tokens I saw had a casting cost of one or two which I believe was changed from zero (at the very beginning when tokens sometimes ended up in the graveyard and could be retrieved from there).

Here is one way to see the costs if you want to check, you’re going to need profane procession and the basic strategy is exile/flip/start stealing.

While tokens leaving the battlefield do not go to the graveyard (anymore) they DO go into exile. Which means they can be brought back by the Tomb of the Dusk Rose. Creatures brought back this way briefly appear in your hand and one can check the cost there if they are quick enough.

I noticed this in a sorin deck playing against one of the PVE vampire token generators and it would always annoy me because there would be a half dozen tokens to pull through before I got to the “good” creatures.
