Taxing does not mean difficult nor fun

I suppose I should elaborate. I dislike RtO because of the large brackets. The 5 node format is just a kicker. I don't really care for NoP but at this point it's optional so I just sit it out. I generally don't care for 5 node events because of having to build for all the nodes.1

gogol666 said:The length and slowness of race to orazca just convinced one of my players (swwagain) to quit. While I think the game is progressing in the right direction (dominaria is a fun set, awr is less grindy, etc. See my kudos post), there are some incomprehensible choices that prevent from having fun with the game:
Long events are boring, because they feel like working (eg repeating the same task over and over)
Permanent supports makes matches even slower: while some of the effects add variety to the game, most of them entail long animations, which, albeit cute, takes forever to play
Animations in general are really well-made but they are slow, in particular on not so new devices. While the game needs it's eye-candy, having a turn lasting longer than a minute (and even more in some cases) feels tiring on the player.
Last, but not least, charges and refreshes are a bad concept: as it is now a player needs to play regularly every few refreshes in order not to lose charges and needs to play at least a full round 6 hours before the end of the event. However, people plays from everywhere in the world and sometimes this schedule requires to play at night, early in the morning, during breaks at work, etc.
There are a few simple and effective solutions to all of these:
- shorter events
- faster animations (or no animation at all)
- all charges given at the start of the event with no max charge.
Please, let's have fun with the game again0 -
5 nodes vs 3 nodes, recharge times, number of charges etc...
The problem isn't yes/no, it's complicated.
The "shape" of the events is very different in terms of time management... Maybe we need to start graphing how much and when time is needed in different things?
5 nodes take more setup time, especially when new. This would be REDUCED if we had more deck slots by default, we could keep more setup. It'd be reduced if events saved the decks from previous events (though while that helps things I don't really approve).
So if we start considering 3 nodes the "default" of what people can handle reasonably then 5 node events need the first charge to be 50% longer to give people time to get their nodes ready, after that initial burst then it's fairly easy to keep up.

Maybe my real problem is the lack of freedom in managing my time. I like playing a lot, but I don't like feeling forced to do it at 6am or during breaks at work. My dream is just choosing when to play4

The simplest solution to the RTO grindiness seems to have longer time between charges. 12 or 16 hours? That would also help the unlucky folks who are having a hard time completing the last charge because of "sleep".2

With how little gameplay we have now, do we really want to further reduce it?0 -
@Mburn7 You sleep more than 12 hours? Lucky guy
I think the problem is that we the gameplay we get comes in bursts. When RTO is on, it takes several hours per day to complete all the charges. When there's no coalition event, there's very little to do. I'd also be OK with RTO running for 3 or 4 days, but with a long time between charges. Gives more flexibility!0 -

As a European the starting and ending times are perfect for me.
But I see the problem for most other users. Either change how the charges are given, especially the time after the last.
Or rotate the starting times in a month so every major region (NA, EU and Asia) gets a fitting window.0
