RotGP without KLD / AER

It's no secret that HoR and RotGP are my 2 favorite events (ever). I was a little weary of playing it without my favorite block (KLD-AER) as there were several cards that were backbones of my decks -- but I'm having a BLAST.

  • 2.3 was made for Dinos.
  • I should have been playing Samut aggro on 3.2 all along.
  • Lightning Runner was definitely a crutch stopping me from creative deck building.
  • AoI as well.
  • Pirates are insane.
How are you breaking free from KLD and making the new block shine this weekend?

Don't miss KLD very much im this event. New cards and new pw are good substitute to every missing part.

Btw. Cycling is still the meta. So, we will see in some days, when akh rotate out what next.

@IM_CARLOS -- I never really jumped on the cycling train so losing KLD has a much bigger impact for me.

I did from the very first day. The tool of choice for almost every objective until now. But don't regret the loss. Looking forward to have new fresh meta and hopefully more option to get a high score in events. Until now you have to cycle a lot for perfect score. Maybe omni could help, but don't have it.

All Karn, all the time; except node 1. Node 1 is beneath him.

Karn is made for pve events. No color restrictions.

My Bolas Pirates are cleaning house, and Samut Aggro is quite fun in general (and for nodes).

For the most part, though, Cycling and HUF Second Sun are still doing most of the heavy lifting

I'm not a huge fan of cycling, but I have a tendency to use it in pve events on burst nodes . This go round I'm not cycling on a single node . I only ever huf/aoss against bolas, so I never really jumped on that train . This is more fun than I expected it to be. I used to play a lot of rashmi loops in this event. Still use kiora a lot in it, but now I have to actually play my decks

This is my approach too; Saheeli takes the first node for her mana, and Karn takes everything else.

Without including any AKH cards (might as well practice for the upcoming Standard rotation), I've been using a combination of my favorite Dinos, an infinite combo that seems more useful for B4T than for this event but is still fun to play with, a few Nyx tricks with Settle the Wreckage and transforming supports, and budget decks involving only commons and uncommons (this time thankfully without the "I bet I can find a more masochistic deck than cycling" Vampires + Path combo, as unlike B4T, RotGP doesn't seem to have any objectives that demand degenerate power levels to achieve reliably).

While it's hard to say exactly how much I'd be doing differently if KLD/AER were still Standard-legal, having to adjust to using 2 new sets and lacking 3 old ones (counting AKH) definitely makes this event feel much more novel than the last time it ran, and losing Lightning Runner, Baral, Metalwork Colossus, and to a lesser extent Solemn Recruit and Oketra is making me appreciate the value of Lannery Storm as one of the relative few absurdly efficient inexpensive creatures in post-AKH Standard (pending any new toys in Dominaria of course).

Is anyone using The Immortal Sun on Bolas?

I'm trying to work up the guts to break free from HUF / AotSS and go aggro.

Yeah, sun and sphinxs. No spells, no ability.. It's basically "win however you like"..HUF goggles approach is still the fastest way for me, but I enjoy killing him with Huatli 2

@bken1234 Been loving this change tbh. When I saw that RotGP was still standard I was very curious what my builds would end up looking like.

Having played each node twice now with a few tweaks here and there in all the new builds. I was supremely satisfied with this event.  Nodes in which I used cycling in the past was sheer aggro.  Others ended up being control or swarms. In short a complete flip of what I played for months on end last fall.
I think that by keeping the event standard forced players to rethink builds and thus kept the event fresh.
3.2 was always a tough one for me. Usually resorted to cycling faith of the devoted. I went with Karn and used menagerie with Ghalta and whipped his demonic tinykitty. Lol. I usually beat that node in 3 minutes or less. Crazy

@Gunmix25 I’m doing a Samut Ghalta build. So fast!!  Uncage is a good idea, might work it in!

I used immortal sun, Sandwurm and thopters against Bolas.  It was a blast

I'm using immortal sun + imminent doom loop for bolas, it appears to be even faster than huf + second sun ...  I'm not too excited by rotgp so i mostly choose fast decks to end it quick.

Ghalta + uncage + path of discovery is a mess. Use it with garruk on some nodes. With some ramp and card draw it's unstoppable fast. Only rhonas give some problem if active. But no deck has it in this event.

@bken1234 turns out every single node can easily be won by just playing H2, so its pretty much a single walker event for me.

Think I got 1 node where I run something else, and its just because doom bolas is better against bolas than Huatli. Oh and immortal sun is integral to the deck, as it makes most of the spells completely free, and the deck completely broken.

But event has gotten a lot easier and a lot less varied now

Oh, and for Ghalta, run commute with dinosaurs. Since Ghalta is the only dinosaur, it counts as 4 more copies of Ghalta that cost 4 mana each and even converts gems ;)

Let me know how you do! Menagerie with Ghalta is insane.

I agree. I limited karn to two nodes that I had the most difficulty in. It works,  but I find other PW loyalties work better in other nodes so I use 'em. Stopped using Kiora as my crutch. Heck I can't recall the last time I used Kiora in events since last summer.
I love Karn, but his multicolors doesn't produce a building challenge in colorless nodes. prefer to use him in colored nodes if I can. That's when he gets really interesting.

Honestly curious, is there another card you're using the chain of Ghaltas to bring out via PoD?
