A helpful poll on Ixalan

Attempt at a --somewhat-- serious poll from the wombatking.  We've seen the cards, most of us have an opinion to weigh in here.  Let's see if some combined feedback from us can help.  Here's how we feel Octagon:

A helpful poll on Ixalan 55 votes

Consider alterations to the cards, this will not go well with the player base. But keep the deadline, we want new cards ASAP.

Change the cards, even if it takes an extra week or two to release them. We can wait for better results.

Well...let's see what happens. Magic the Gathering survived Homelands, I'm sure Octagon will make it through this okay.

****Disclaimer****  "Consider altering the cards" in choice 1 and "change the cards" in choice 2 is meant to more-or-less be the same idea, the real difference being whether or not we want to wait for it or want quicker results.  Polls don't let you go back and edit the choices but it pretty much says what I want it to. :)

Just reduce all the costs of the cards by 20%. Except for the vehicles they need more of a 40% decrease

I think they need to go further than just the costs.

Remember. Existing cards are going to be altered eventually too. So the cards as we see them may be just fine once everything is adjusted.

Also I welcome generally higher costs and lower power for the long-term as it will enable more strategies than just “gotta go fast”

They said point blank that old cards are going to be rebalanced in the future. I would anticipate anything powerful you rely on now will change.

I understand that to mean more like, “overpowered cards like Omni and HUF will get a serious look,” rather than “every card in the game is going to be nerfed”.

There are plenty of other overly powerful cards out there, and I understand how you’d think that. However after the release of this set, I think it’s reasonable to expect more broad sweeping changes.

You may very well be correct. But it took them three months (probs more) to come up with this nonsense. At some point we need to toss our hands up and say go to the next set.

No, if they really want to release more sets to equal paper magic. Rebalancing cards probably demands more effort than creating new cards.

And, do ya really think they are going to rebalance all simple and common cards? Because, how many of the Ixalan common cards are usable, compared to prior ones? Look at Pirate's Cutlass... are they going to rebalance cartouches to cost 30+, Honed Khopesh to cost 20+, and every card that is more powerfull than this waste of a card? Now think about those 6/6 creatures for 17 mana. Are they really going to rebalance the whole game to this power level? I really don't see it happening. Really.

Looking at the card gallery my initial impressions are not good. I thought AKH was going to start the easing into the reduction in power creep. This is diving in head first. BUT there's plenty of gem conversion, PW gains are decent generally, and there's new mechanics to consider. I'm giving it a begrudging chance until I can see how the set functions.

Fix the typos. This is such shoddy work I would not sign off on this release just on this one aspect. Utter fail by the QA department.

My main reason for saying big changes are necessary is that creatures are going up in cost significantly, while kill spells are staying around the same cost. It's already hard enough to get good stacks of creatures going, (without any of the enablers that are almost certainly going to be nerfed) why are they making it harder in the set all about creatures working together?

Agreed the typos are embarrassing. The grammar and questionable phrasing also need to be adressed. I don't want to test play every card because I'm unsure of how it functions.

If you hover the mouse cursor over the spoiler images, you get the spoiler text.  The grammar's generally improved in the text version.  There are also a few functional changes.

Thanks for the tip. I hope that is the version that makes it into the game. I'm 90% on mobile so can't hover  .

On mobile you can just tap the card images to get the alt-text. Tap another card to make it go away from the first.

Just like with the previous developers, the question comes to mind if they actually play-test their creations or they just come up with something that sounds right and let us find out if it works or not.

They certainly don't check the grammar on the cards - I have a theory they use some algorithm for the text and it's auto-applied to the cards based on the code for the card so they don't (have to) type anything, hence why plurals always show up for some things and singular show up for others and long-winded descriptions show up for abilities that could be described in half the time - so I wonder how much they play before they put it out there for us.

But we'll see how it goes...
