For high-level alliances, it counteracts the iso draught and gives something to do after Round 8 & Max progression are hit. For lower alliances, it gives something to do after the side nodes inexplicably scale out more casual rosters. This would also reduce the perception of rewards of Gauntlet being as out of date, as you also have 3x 3*'s, 3x 4's and an LT from the boss, which exceeds the normal PVE payout. Just a thought...
