Yes you want champ levels on 5s you are going to use.
They about double their power every 20 levels.
This is not true.  A 550 5* is exactly double what a 450 5* is.  Health wise, power wise, match damage wise, etc.  So they double, but it's every 100 levels, not 20.

Edit: the same is true for 4*.  370 is 2x what a 270 is, and the boost to 478 doubles that if they're boosted.
Well a wise man said it......

Is the "20 champ levels = double the power" an anecdotal thing?  It's been mentioned before, but the closest thing to an explanation that I've found was similar to Aes' claims to how stat increases at the upper tiers jump at higher intervals, which is more relevant for boosting.

Rhycar's made a similar claim in 5* Daredevil's thread about how much more effective he would be at 470+ but didn't further explain, besides the inherent 17% bump in stats.
More relevant? How is that fact "more" relevant when considering boosting? A character's stats are the same at a given level no matter how it gets there, and whether it's temporary (being buffed), or permanent (pumped in iso a/o added champ levels).

Unfortunately it also applies to facing them scaled to high levels. 5* essential nodes in SCL9 are a great demonstration :D

Maybe you mean it's more apparent or more obvious.

Not "exactly" but generally. And increasing by a fixed ratio every specified period is the definition of an exponential curve.

If anyone needs an example of what doubling every hundred looks like, if a stat was 500 at level 100 ...

Last thought .... if the health is doubled, the character lasts twice as long, and their damage is doubled, they do damage twice as fast, meaning the character is not twice as effective, but at least 4 times as effective (if their powers are all level dependent and dealing/healing damage, creating/buffing tiles, not fixed numbers regardless of levels as with tiles modifies/swaps, AP gens/steals, etc)
But in general, I find champed+a few levels to be a happy medium in terms of usability and not needing to worry about randomly pulling one from a classic. Most of my little guys are 455-460-ish, and I don't have to think too hard even if I want to add in my 451 Starlord or 453 Cap and play them against bigger 5*s. Main thing about adding more champ levels is that it's more critical for low health characters like Strange and Goblin, who can accidentally drop dead from match dmg.
