When you enter an event it checks your highest mastery tier among the colors that are available to play in that event. I. E. If you are silver in black, but bronze in all the other colors you would qualify as silver in all events except those that don't have a black node. You can see the event colors in the event descriptions.

Whatever you do, do not go out of your way to master cards. Let it happen as you play new cards you like. If you don't like the card, take it out of your deck and don't touch it anymore.
