Is it possible to play as a f2p player and make real progress in this game?

You don't need masterpieces to play or win this game.  And nobody paid me a penny to say that.

    Hi @Jason_peters_36, I'm a real person!

Yikes! It sounds like you've had some bad luck.

If you look through the history of the people that commented, you'll notice that most of us have also been playing since the beginning and you'll see some pretty passionate comments disagreeing with D3's past decisions. I would be very surprised if any of them were paid shills.

IM SORRY, BUT NO,NO,NO,NO....... this post is full of either paid off people posting to entice people not to give up on this game, or are actual game devs or connected to them. i have spoken to dozens of players in game and out of the game, and I have not found 1 player who has had a different experience than me. Ive been playing since the day this game came out, still using the same account and all. And in the entire time ive been playing( mind you that i am a 20+ year MTG card game veteran, who has multiple real-world tourney first place wins under my belt), NOT ONCE have I gotten a masterpiece card. And ive opened 5 of those blasted pink packs already. Which I had to pay money to buy currency bundles to do so. Due to the fact that also, NOT ONCE have I been able to reach past 400 in ANY AND ALL EVENTS, NO MATTER HOW MUCH TIME AND EFFORT I PUT INTO IT. THIS GAME IS MAYBE NOT NECESSARILY PAY.TO.PLAY, BUT ITS ABSOLUTELY PAY.TO.WIN, and 98% of the time, PAY.TO.HAVE.FUN. FOR MONTHS I HAVE JUST FELT LIKE I AM CONSTANTLY GRINDING JUST TO GET ENOUGH CURRENCY TO BUY SOMETHING SINCE THE DAILY LOGIN PACKS AND REWARDS DONT HELP MUCH AT ALL, I HAVE ALL THE COMMONS, BUT STILL NOT ALL OF THE UNCOMMONS, ABOUT 1/8 OF RARES, AND A PATHETIC BATCH OF MYTHICS. MOSTLY USELESS ONES. YAYSoooo please quit this misinformation, its downright mean to new players, and old players alike.

I think you're the first guy I've met who played from the start, claim to put in effort and not manage to get past top 400 of any tier of any event. I had friends who were topping gold tier within 3 months of play.

Discounting the fact that some events don't even have a 400th place, it would take a less than 50% win rate to not even get to 400th in a 1k max event like hor I think.

    Hi @Jason_peters_36, I'm a real person... too...

You can read my posts and see I'm DEFINITELY not on the payroll...

I have a F2P acct that is only about 6 months old and its competitive... Better than Top 400 thats for sure.

Not sure where you are missing out when playing...

I'm going to guess that @Jason_peters_36 tiered up
to platinum too quickly and haven't been able to get
his card collection catch up with the increased
competition from mythics. it's a catch 22 situation if
you need to beat mythic decks, in order to rank high
enough to acquire rare+ cards, to increase your
    chances of beating mythic decks.

a possible solution to get back into the game is to
target new perspectives, drake haven and shefet
    monitor. all akh rares.

@Jason_peters_36 Yeah, I am pretty sure I could get top 400 in most of these events without using a single mythic or rare card...  You might be great at playing MTG but you are not very good at MTGPQ at this point.  If you would like some deck help and other ideas of how to maximize resources send me a DM.. we can invite you to our wonderful MTGPQ in Slack.  Others would likely extend you a  similar offer from their alliances.

You can absolutely make progress as an f2p player. The majority of my time in the game was f2p. I spent some money during AER and AKH, but aside from that, I've been f2p. I hit platinum before I ever spent a nickel. Just have to accept that you are at the mercy of rngesus and you're not going to get all the toys.

Its possible to play as a f2p. The hard part is to reach lvl 60 with all your planeswalker. Like Diablo or Wow, the game truly begin when you hit max level.

Some of the best players in the top 10 coalitions and on the Platinum leader board are F2P or almost F2P (they may have made 1-2 purchases to support the game).

    It’s entirely possible.

I'm not in one of the top coalition though I'm not a bad player, but I'm faithful to my coalition and trying to bring it up in the leaderboard. I've been playing for a year, never spent a dime on the game. I've got 36 mythics and 180 rates, though I never got any masterpiece. I say it is possible to be a good player if you play a lot. Some really good card you'll miss, while other player won't because they bought them, but who cares ? As long as you just want to play and win most matches, you can go ftp.

I agree, I spend 60$ on crystal for booster, when they cost 600 crystal. Since then, I didn't spent one cent and I'm nearly always top 50-75 and +- 2 times a week top 25.

The important things, its you need to play a lot. You can buy a 300 crystal booster once every 2 weeks if you don't miss anythings.

I know one of our recently retired players who I apparently am not allowed to name, but his initials are DP, has been free to play from the start and has around 120 mythics.  Then again, good luck ever catching up to him without QB or mythic level prizes from any source.

Another decent source of crystals is story mode, if only there were more of it.

I am consistently top 250. I often top 100 or better. My coalition is just out of top 100 (think we are around 115-120).

Up until AKH and HOU I barely spent anything I think I spent money once to get one of the Planeswalkers but that was it.

Since AKH I've made more purchases but I personally decided that I could afford to make a purchase from time to time but it is entirely possible to be f2p.

I've never spent money on this game. I scored 1335 on Return of the God Pharaoh last weekend, have 2 masterpieces, and am NOT in a top coalition. You can 100% play this game for free.

I have not spent any money on MTGPQ.
My coalition is a group of two, me and one friend that does not play.
I win all the time using junk cards.
I have a bunch of mythics, hundreds of rares... no masterpieces.
I just throw together a rando stack of cards and play. It's fun.
My color mastery is platinum in all 5 colors.
I save mana crystals until I have 650 then buy the next dual color planeswalker when one becomes available.
There are some areas, such as the coalition rewards that I cannot achieve by myself.
Playing is still gratifying and I enjoy it without using real money.
