The aftermath of selling a post-nerf lvl.519 OML and what it taught me.

I really feel that the actual nerf pales in comparison to the way they botched the compensation. The resale value of OML has been talked about, but even the compensation token they botched. Because it was a nice gesture, giving everyone a token to pull a 5*. But that gesture falls flat when you realize that if luck gives you the 6th cover in a color (or 7th, or 9th, etc.), and it turns out support has been instructed not to exchange it because it's not a latest cover, you don't get a 5* cover. You get 2000 ISO.
So based purely on random luck, they compensated some players with a 5* cover and some players with 2000 ISO. They really need to look at RNG factor in 5* rewards and figure out a fair way to handle it, because the system they have right now is just untenable.
I'm not supporting it anymore. I'll still play because I love the game but I'm done spending money on it.

Agree with the above posts and in regard to bossblacks comment he is absolutely right. The unbelievable regret and dissappointment I have for spending at such a ridiculous level is really hard to cope with. I am not rich or well off by any means.......But I loved the game so I never regretted it until recently. To be left with nothing to show for your efforts and such a pathetic and unfairly changed product is just the lowest blow. Now it's like starting over in the game I'm so far behind all these monster thanos and bolts dominating. All that money wasted I could have done so many better things with it. I really hope new and mid tier players read this and think twice about spending anything on MPQ.5

I'm just tired of talking to poor Yorick about this 5* nonsense. It's long past a year since Surfer was introduced and his fellows after him, and started griefing players not favoured by our pitiless lord RNGesus.
It's clear the buy clubs obsessed with chasing the sparkly purple are far more important than the vets with 7/1/1 Phoenixes, the mid-tier players with OML as their only high level 5*, the ignorant newbies who pull one cover and get crushed by scaling and mmr. It's been more than a year, and new and improved token and cover stores are far more important than fixing all these.5 -
Absolutely agree0

And another titan falls. Sorry to hear of your experience, J1P. It's really sad that the devs are prioritizing only a portion of the playing/paying base right now with changes/decisions that are having those that have played the longest to stop supporting it.
It does make me worry that we're beyond the player base death spiral that has devs monetizing what they can before the end.1 -
Agreed orbitalint, At this point it feels like the game is circling the drain and dying a slow death..... meanwhile the devs trying to grab some quick cash from us before they shut it down.1

This is brutal to read. Yuck.
Complete side note: Thanos is unlikely to get to that 10% status because you have to realize a couple things:
a) It includes PvE
b) It includes low level users.
OML became ubiquitous because with 1 yellow he could basically eat damage all day and save health packs. Thanos does the opposite really, he eats your roster. So it's quite unlikely he becomes so rampant as to get on the radar, at least on this metric.
Yes, high end PvP he's going to (or already has) moved to the forefront, but the rest of the game he's not, and that'll be enough to save him, I think.

J1P. I too have felt your pain albeit to a lesser degree. My point of quitting spending was when Green Goblin came out and they changed the way certain skills worked do to the reinforced tile. I had highly invested in King Pin and Deadpool and the game tweak left King Pin's black from interacting with Deadpool's purple because it now removed from game instead of destroying. At that point I finally figured it out. It's all about trying to milk as much money from players as possible. The only reason to buff older characters is so newer players don't get frustrated. This game is all about the new shiny carrot. Had they gone a different route like Riot games and sold bonus content like skins or icons instead of just making characters so rare they would have been a top 50 game forever. Who wouldn't have forked over $ if they could have an X-Force skinned wolverine over the yellow/blue, it would have made things unique. Alas they have gone the standard freemium game route which is limit resources and keep creating new carrots. A toilet game you call it, you are correct on two levels and where I am typing this now. Best of luck J1P you deserved better4

Man, it's like the forums from a few years ago with all the vet names coming out of the woodwork but for not great reasons. Wish you all the best as this game has been getting less and less of my time lately.1

Personally, I think the real mistake you made was opening them all at the same time. If it were me, I would have sold OML, but not opened any covers until I had enough ISO to level any character that I already had at 13 covers. You said you opened 9 unusable banner covers, which I presume means you already had him at 13 covers. You shouldn't have opened any covers until after you had him champed, that way you wouldn't be losing out on any new ones of his that you pulled.0

Also, you don't have to have 13 covers for a pull to be un-usable, you can be unlucky and have a 5/5/1 character and pull 9 unusable covers.6 -
I believe the real problem that many people have here on this forum is that they invest too much of themselves into this game. It becomes their life, their purpose of living. So, when things change, they don't handle it very well on a psychological or emotional level. If you set your heart on something that can change, you're setting yourself up for disappointment and frustration. In the words of Yoda "Train yourself to let go of everything you fear to lose".
On the bright side, if someone quits the game because they're so upset about some change, then it is surely good for them to quit, because they're addicted to it.

I'm a long-time player as well (Day 1192) that has a champed OML at 457. Johny's write up is so spot on it hurts :-(. The confusing thing to me was the rationale for why they chose to nerf OML. They had said that 10% of people use him every match. Until a month and a half ago he was my ONLY champed 5*, so why WOULDN'T I use him every match? It really gets down to the fact that lots players that didn't have him champed would use him all the time. I know even before I champed him I was guilty of that because a 0/1/0 OML is already better than almost any 4* in PVE alone. This, to me, was what they were trying to avoid - having those without him champed using him in every match to save on health packs. The way they COULD have nerfed him while not screwing the players who champed him would be to change his yellow to burst heal every turn until it was a 5 yellow covers or something. As far as nerfing Thanos, I don't know if they'd actually do that because he's a health pack draining machine (he's now my highest 5* at 458) and I've had to use a TON more health packs now since OML was nerfed. It also makes Bolt impossible to face without using a health pack each time now as well.
I've only spent about $250 on the game over these 2.5 years (mostly on VIP) and that's stopping now that they screwed such a large portion of their customer base.3 -
Well stated old friend.1

Thanks for sharing. I am nowhere near your level but find reading threads like this useful for what's to come. I've been playing for about a year and a half & am basically just starting my 4* run.

Thanos won't hit 10% usage any time soon. The reason OML did was because OML was used to grind 1-point/3-point matches in PvE, and also because lots and lots of people had him in a usable state for that purpose. Thanos is good for grinding, but due to inflation, he'll never, ever be as omnipresent as Logan was.
The OML nerf had *nothing* to do with PvP. Their claim of 10% usage doesn't make sense in PvP. It has to be concern over his usage in PvE.
I can definitely sympathize with concerns over the 5* tier rewards distribution. Making the entirety of endgame play dependent on RNG sucks. And the nerf compensation plan was pretty ****, in that it completely played into that RNG. Choosing to avoid spending on the game makes a lot of sense.5 -
I tried to use my OML once and was so disappointed I haven't touched him since. I have kept him more for nostalgia. While he hasn't been my strongest choice for a long time he helped me through my earlier months ( yes I was that new person who got excited when they got a LT and used it) without him tanking I probably would have given up. Still bitter about the obvious money grab and still not spending a cent on this game until they apologize and fix their issues, all of them.1

I came to the same conclusion after they nerfed 4* shethor and Xforce -
I play more casually now- did not spend anything for the longest time after that. No more getting up in the middle of the night - no more shield hop stress, guess what? It's still fun to play maybe more fun without the stress and the constant LINE check ins
I did start spending again with VIP, weird but it is mostly because of the faster healing rate, at my leisurely pace of play my characters are healed when I feel like playing.
Don't invest yourself so much , it's just a damn game

Sorry to hear it went so badly j1p. Surprised you sold it with so many 5*'s not champed (so many possibilities of covers that would need to be tossed/sold) - but I have agreed with the thought for a long, LONG time that covers should be colorless so that experience isn't so awful.
I do wonder about future nerfs. Almost everyone agrees with you that it is Bolt and then Thanos that would get it next. I worry about Thanos because the ftp crowd finally got to a hoard point recently, so you see MANY more Thanos than Bolt, who was out to early for your typical hoarder to pull.
Although I always question developer alternative motives. OML saves health packs for players, Thanos costs them.....

I don't think the devs are as reliant on whales and vets these days. When you are a start up you need those whales because they are the best source of income as microtransactions don't help much at that stage. Once you're hitting the audience that MPQ does you no longer need whales as thousands of micro transactions is a safer business model than whales.
I don't agree with it but that's the truth of business for many companies.
