What is Killing Your Team in Heroic Venom?

  • that second to last node in hard mode is a killer
  • The difference between 3000hp Muscle and 3500hp Muscle (aka cannot be killed by adamantium slash and a few matches) is kind of hilarious, in a "not hilarious" kind of way
  • Everything is killing my team. I dread the day lazy daken is unleashed.

Countdown tiles kill me since I don't have my Magneto to remove them. Every fight is pretty much just a gamble. Either the CD tiles fall into places I can access or they don't. If it's the later I die without being able to do much.

Is this what the Prologue felt like back in the day? It's been so long I forgot...

No, but only because when I saw "1 turn left on tommy gun and 4 threaten tiles out" I would retreat and nobody lost health for it
  • Most epic fail ever that I have ever witnessed in MPQ occurred to me yesterday....

I was playing the Essentials node with 40ish Yelena + Muscle + Thug. No problem, brought maxed Wolvie and MStorm to accompany Bag O' Torch for an easy win.

Board is reasonably favorable, and I work down the Muscle easily enough. He is almost downed and I decide to make my red last match to grab enough Adamantium Slash Yelena into oblivion.

Threaten goes off... which with the disappearing countdown tile, causes the dreaded "Cascade of Doom". I sigh while I watch this, and think that this is no big deal, only being level 40s. My jaw drops in utter disbelief, as the cascade ends in a DOUBLE CRITICAL match, annihilating Wolvie into utter oblivion (How the tinykitty is it possible for a straight match 3 to deal over 1000 damage before the strike tiles are added in???)

After the 4 round stun on myself wears off from the utter disbelief, I refocus on salvaging my dignity. Torch easily disposes the Muscle and the Thug in quick retribution for Wolvie, leaving only Yelena, with maybe 1000 HP to burn through. Easy enough.

However, I'm out of AP at the moment and need a few turns to recharge. Yelena makes short work out of Bag O' Torch because of the conveniently non-matchable +400 in strike tiles the Muscle left with a minor cascade, leaving only MStorm and her.

No big deal, I only need one power to win at this point, and I confidently match green, charging up Lightning Strike for the next round.

I smile in anticipation for the impending victory, but it is short-lived.

Yelena casts Payback Mission on her turn, creating a crit tile from a remnant Wolvie strike tile.... the realization of what is about to happen turns my face white for a moment.

But then, the AI chooses to match a horizontal environmental match 4 instead of playing the crit tile. "Yes!" I exclaim in excited response!

The horizontal match 4 results in a vertical match 4, which causes a row of new tiles to drop in right... next... to... the... crit........ tile...... /sigh....... BOOM.

    /epicfacepalm

Trolled not once, but TWICE is the same match by the AI. Unbelievable....
  • @Lyrian - that is heartbreaking. My condolences to your brave team. That is tinykitty unbelieveable. Also unbelieveable but totes happened to me last night:
Heroic Venom - Rescue Mary Jane:
Venom/Rags/Daken have downed my HT and Mod Storm but my BP is still fighting and has 2k HP left. I have enough Black to unleash Rage of the Panther but it won't kill the enemy team - it will leave them with 100-200 HP each. I hesitate before using it because I know it will give the AI 5 AP of their strongest color... That's enough for Rags or Venom to fire off an ability... Oh well... Gotta risk it.

BP gives them 5 Blue AP.

Go home Black Panther. You're drunk.

That's really weird. BP is supposed to give the color that the other side has highest in their matching scores. You should be able to look through their values to determine what color BP will give before your move, but none of those characters has blue as a higher value tile.

Maybe it's because I'm more sensitive to damage in this event and my matches last longer than normal, but it does feel like the AI is getting more crazy cascades and tiles lining up for match-4s than in other events. I'm sure that's just my perception.

Definitely the cascades of doom for me.

It feels as though every mission Yelena has been able to use Lethal Recon on the 3 or 4th turn; considering she's not getting fed the purple AP by goons, it's just infuriating.

There have been no close missions in this event - either I get turned to paste instantly, or I luck into strong cascade so that I can Mistress of the Elements > Battleplan > Rage of the Panther.

Heck yes! I love that combo. It's fun with HTs green too!

I'm doing ok in the deadly bracket. The normal one I'm just not willing to spend as much time on because it seems like people are constantly pulling away at the top. I'll wake up at 4am and make a push in both.

As for combos, I also quite like Mistress of Elements -> Battleplan -> Hailstorm. If I have Psylocke on the crew and I slip in her red then the hailstorm does about 600 per turn. Rage is great if you can down the whole team at once.
  • Infinite Venom stuns of skill.
  • I've been keeping my team near or at full health almost the entire tournament; my secret? I just gave up playing this event.

At my job, I work hard, and am well compensated.

With games, I play, and compensation is enjoyment, satisfaction, etc

... and this PVE is hard work with no compensation. Much more satisfying to stare at a blank wall. (especially if there is a TV in front of it)

there, I said it, I'm glad.
  • I played HT nodes mainly. Bad luck with starting board, Crazyguy lucking out on all the random purple drop matches, not targeting Bagspy first in Bagspy+2 goons nodes killed me. I targeted Maggia Assassin and Thug sometimes and she usually was able to collect enough purple or black and once Muscle puts out a few strike tiles, it went downhill from there. It's just too much when there is someone doing matches in enemy team with those strike tiles. Muscle's strike tiles are OP. Later I killed her first and I could win those matches without using boosters.

I've only touched it once since it went to Hard and that was with a fully healed team with buffs. I barely won.

Why would lots of EV be a bad thing?

I think I've only lost one node on Hard so far but I've been getting completely smashed on all of them. I don't think I've finished one with more than about 50% health each time.

What's been really screwing me over is the fact I've only really got Wolverine (L85), Psylocke (L51 - no black covers), MStorm (L50) and Torch (L15) to use for the whole event. Add that on top of **** starting boards, countdown tiles I can't match away or smash thanks to said **** board/limited roster and the seemingly endless cascades that the goons and Rags generate and this whole event is really just a slog.

Bad is Good has been far more entertaining.
  • Pretty much everything BUT Scaling. Today, for every one match I've been able to win on EITHER Heroic Venom board, I get completely destroyed in around 5 or 6.

Yes that combo's Awesome. Great way to wipe a team out when your not paying attention.

What finally ended up killing me in the end was bad boards. When I went to make my push in the last two hours to finish in the top 20 I couldn't get an in colour match to save my life. Ended up losing 3 straight matches and burning all of my health packs. Had enough time to wait for the packs to recharge and ended up winning a few matches and finishing low top 50.
  • Give yourself more time near the end I gave myself 3 and half hours just in case I died. No one was going to clear all nodes without either healing in prologue or using up their health packs. The limited team selection meant people couldn't do their usual tricks near the end.
  • I checked limited roster and Daken. I don't mind the limited roster as I know these events give out a ton of ISO. So I started off slow, but once I leveled my Psylocke to 79 from 51 she started to carry her weight. But it was definitely painful on the first day of the event (especially with no other events worth mentioning to gain ISO in).

Daken (and by extension the Muscle's Threaten ability) is just rude. Psylocke, Wolvie, and Torch all want Red so I'm faced with either gimping them or leaving a ton of red on the board to try and match enemy strike tiles. And the only board clear ability is Storm's, which unfortunately takes green to activate, so it's really a screwed if you do, screwed if you don't scenario. Quite painful. I'm pretty sure Daken is the reason I got top 50 last night instead of top 20 (think I ended up b/w 21 and 25; was 23rd going into final match, which didn't finish in time).
