I've had one team member quit and 2 more are refusing to play over the forced purchase of Dovin. How do you feel about the decision to require a specific PW for a coalition event.

voted "ok for this time" cause i would have bought him anyways.

In abstract though it's just BOO, BOO.

I'm all about constructive criticism, but this is just a bad idea. I also would probably have gotten him anyway but now I feel that I have to. And that is not what I want to feel in this game.

Besides, I also don't like set-specific PWs, especially if there are two of them. I never got Arlinn. I like Dovin more although we will never have any real cards for him after this block. I will not get Chandra 2. All of this are bad ideas and we can only hope for a similar change as they eventually did for Sorin.

It's a particularly insidious move from my perspective and moves us deeper into pay to win territory.

It's one thing to set objectives that a new planeswalker would hit more easily than older ones but not exclusively so. Werewolf objectives being easier with arlinn, but also quite doable with others being an example.

Requiring a PW is a move in the wrong direction and if this is a sign of things to come it will backfire as new players will find it increasingly difficult to compete.

I am largely a f2p player but occasionally spend a few bucks (gisela being a recent example) to make things a little less grindy and have been competitive with a great coalition, albeit not elite.

I'm also probably a target market for these games as whales will buy everything anyway and determined f2p players will stay so, it's the discretionary spenders in the middle where some growth comes from and this will have the reverse effect on my spending habits (I can spend crystals but don't like my hand being forced so they will go on ajani instead).

You also need a healthy player base to sustain the whales and the more changes are made, the less likely people are to participate as objectives move from soft lock to hard lock.

    Tldr: Bah humbug.

I agree with this completely except for "especially if there are two of them" -- because don't forget what they did to Saheeli.

The biggest issue I have with this, however, (even bigger than what it's doing to my team) is that it further alienates the new player base. I play this game with an alt account and I don't expect to get everything -- in fact I do awful in PVE -- but I would at least like the chance to try. With something like this you are forcing new players to spend money on something that they shouldn't really be focusing their money on now (and I mean money because it's a lot harder to get crystals in the beginning). A newer player should have the opportunity to play this event in entirety because it's PVP and be successful at it -- by that I mean at least have the opportunity to get progression.

I voted fine with Dovin this one time as it's the first time d3 try out this way for events.

but if it proves very unpopular, which i believe to be so, d3 should scrap the compulsory lock on a particluar pw for a node for future events.

d3 can make it easier for set related pw to hit those secondaries, but shouldn't lock up the nodes to a particular one.

Fine for this time until we see the event through.

I have him so I'm not bothered about what to spend money/crystals on. I wanted to build for energy and he's the one to do it.

However, I'm more concerned that when paired up he's not been the most reliable planeswalke,r as far as wins go, for me. He either locks down and wins hard or dies quickly, so I'm not sure he's ready to be taken into coalition events.
  • Not only do I hate the idea of a lock-up for PW (insert gratuitous 'yes I was planning to buy him anyway, that's not the point), but considering this event is all about energized nodes, and my game keeps crashing the more 'bling' is on the screen, it will be a terrible investment full of crashes.

Add to the fact that I can get crystals from events faster than QBs, with no time to also QB, and I won't have the chance to level Dovin to a competitive level.

I heartily disapprove of the intent here, even though it's not going to affect me personally since I've been saving up for Dovin for a while now.

If, however, the same nonsense is pulled with an appalling, block-limited mono-color PW like Chandra 2, I might have further things to say on the topic.

When they start gating content behind purchases, this game stops being F2P and becomes not just P2W but P2P. At which point I, and probably a whooole lot of other people, am done. There are plenty of games out there that understand that forcing players to cough up $$ is a losing business model compared to giving the players so much fun that they want to shell out $$.

When I heard from other coalition members about Dovin being required for an event, I was beside myself. And I already have him. Stupid, stupid idea. And he's not a very good planeswalker, from an abilities perspective. I mostly wanted the blue/white combination. I even tried building a deck around the energize theme. Wasn't impressed. Then again, I think this block is rather underwhelming, it's new mechanics are not particularly versatile. But I digress. REQUIRED PLANESWALKER FOR AN EVENT IS A DUMB IDEA.

Where does it actually say that you are required to own Dovin Baan for the event?

In a update thread/devolpment thread somewhere, the devs stated you'll need your own Dovin for the locked node in the event.

    I really dont mind ???
so we lost ability co compete in one event, big woop, time to move on. Im sure you soon will be able to buy him for crystals.
I assume the problem is with event for players who only paid $$ for PW ??
getting crystals is not that difficult and if anything given the recent drop rates (which is acknowledged by majority of players) You should hold off with buying Big Box as soon as you reach 600
keep some reserve for ocassions like Dovin icon_e_smile.gif

It's a lot harder for newer players -- especially since they need cards to be competitive.

No, they stated it would be locked to Dovin. Nowhere did it say you needed to own him, no more than you needed to own Saheeli when the node was locked to her the first time this event came around.

You'll need to own Dovin Baan to battle on the Blue and White Node.

@kinomoto -- you don't need to own him to play the event. You can skip that node

It is a coalition event centered on the new expansion.... If you don't like it don't spend your crystals on it. They have given us over 1000 crystals this week, so nobody has any right to complain.
