Discussion: Increasing number of covers

How about 1, 2 and 3-star upgrade tokens? They could be spent to upgrade any character power of that level you have already unlocked. Some tournaments would continue to reward out covers like they do now, but every 2 or 3 events rewards upgrade tokens instead. (Or have the upgrade tokens be Alliance rewards in some events while the individual rewards are covers.)0

For example, you just pulled a Spiderman purple, but you already have it maxed? Pay 600 HP to change it to an elusive blue cover.
I think this would be a decent solution. It doesn't break the system since the player still needs to acquire a cover of the specific character, the devs still get paid, and the player gets what they want for a price.
Other than people screaming for pay2win it doesn't sound out if the question. Devs win players win. It's a possibility.
That's a pretty great idea. Another one that I've thought about is to have a generic *** token for a specific color but not linked to a specific character.
So, as a progression award, (or something like that), you could pull a *** Black that could be used on Dr. Doom, Punisher, Hulk, or whoever is a 3* character that used that particular color.
Obviously, this would be a higher value item so it would be in the same category as the Diabolical tokens, or the same ballpark, at least.0 -
While there are a lot of similar suggestions, rainbow covers make the most sense from the current payout structure and from a logical standpoint. Adding different types of upgrade options paths or packs adds to the complexity level.
I do like how you currently need to get a cover to unlock a color ability, it's increasing difficult to do that. Next 3* cover is probably coming out next week.0 -
Oh having a rainbow cover as your first cover would unlock the top power with no choice. Otherwise a new interface would need to be designed.0

Cryptobrancus wrote:What would you guys think about replacing the reward slot with all three powers with just one rainbow, below that only one cover of a specific color
The ** prize that used to be 3 covers should definitely be a 3-color one and the next a 2-color. We suggested multicolor covers a few times, never got any reaction -- but I have some hopes it might see the daylight as the respec was pushed in -- even if late by 2 months. Quite trivial to implement and has really good game value across the board. And I see no negative impact on cashflow worth mentioning.0 -

Really, we're getting LazyCaptain that soon?
I wouldn't be surprised. Iceix did say next cover is a lazy variation, and the next pve is going to have an alliance component. It would fit.
I give up on this signature ****, I'm just not good at it0 -
Why not just increase the number of tokens given out per event proportionally to the number of characters/covers in play? This would give you the same probability of pulling a cover to improve your roster over time as covers are added.0

And how would that help out D3?
They need to do something to keep new people playing. If they end up with like 50 3* characters, and don't adjust the number of tokens given out, it will eventually be impossible to transition from a 2* roster to a 3* roster unless people want to spend a ton of real cash (most people don't), and they'll end up quitting. Downward spiral as new players quit --> game dies. I know I will quit if I end up having to drop $20+ to make a single character playable because I'll never get the covers I need.
I know they want to make money but there is a balance to be had.0 -
New players don't see *** covers for much time and when they do shell out more money on roster. So more *** means more money to D3. And it does not hurt play at start in any way.
D3 never showed it gives a damn about established players especially those doing the ** to *** transition. The last countless PVE event screwed the mid players many times over without really much improvement.
And those who actually get *** covers a plenty did not get them from tokens. I mean * and ** tokens. Most are direct prizes or *** tokens. Most means well over 90%.0 -
I think there needs to be some sort of new variation in the way 3* covers are distributed due to the abundance of them.
At the rate D3 is releasing 3* characters, theres going to be more 3*s the 1 and 2*s combined. And yet they are incredibly difficult to obtain. You need to rank top 10 in PvPs just to get 2 3* covers, and Youd have to rank top 50 13 times in order to max out a single 3* character, and thats not even taking into account getting the build you want.
I think an easy solution would be to just make it slightly easier to obtain 3* covers. Give out 3 for ranking top 10, 2 for 10-25, and 1 for 25-50. Rainbow covers wouldnt be a bad idea either I suppose.
I understand that 3* covers need to be difficult to obtain, but at this rate there wont be any team variation save the people who can afford to cough up lots of money on upgrading covers. I have 7 3* characters stuck on 30-45, and I consistently rank top 10 in the PvP tournaments.
Or maybe they could lay off the 3*s for awhile and give us more 1-2*s to focus on for abit?0 -
I've already mentioned that they keep adding more and more characters and everytime we have less chances to get the covers we actually need. Every character added is about 1500*14 HP = ~21000 to max out a char.
It's an insane amount of money.
So yeah. Something needs to be done about this. The chances from getting a specific *** cover from a standard pack lowers everytime.0 -
Actually there was even a hearsay on D3 strategy to make you win only limited amount of sets for a ***, say 2 or 3 and not post it as prize over that. Leaving only the token way to get the rest, or certainly to direct buy.0

So, the problem is that generic Standard and Heroic tokens become less and less useful over time, because roster development values multiple covers on a given character over 1-3 covers on many different characters. This is true both from a rank transition and a limited roster space standpoint.
The "I only pull red GSBW covers" issue is much smaller; bad luck with RNG happens, and while it's frustrating, it doesn't compare to the other issues. If transitioning from 2* to 3* used to take two months, and now it takes three and a half months, and we can expect that time to grow indefinitely over time, that's a much bigger problem, especially when combined with the problem that it used to take 3000 HP to get enough roster spots that you don't have to vendor your first cover of a 3*, now it takes 4000 HP, and we can expect that number to grow indefinitely over time.
I think the easiest answer to this problem is already in the game: specialty tokens that only contain six to eight characters in them. I know there have been technical issues with event tokens recently, and as a spot fix they've been replaced with generic Heroic tokens, but I think the long term fix will be to mostly phase out the generic Heroic token in favor of multiple narrower tokens--potentially adding the ability to choose one of two or three types of token as a reward.
Standard tokens can probably stay as-is; they've never been a reliable way of getting anything other than 1*s in small quantities. Heroic tokens will have to become either significantly more common (which introduces other problems, like accelerating the roster size squeeze) to maintain the likelihood of pulling a desired cover, or phased out in favor of narrower token types.0 -
I agree that the repeatedly getting the same color of a three star cover is not the major problem, but rather the struggle to get enough 3* covers for any single character.
What about creating another level of token up from Heroic that only has 3 and 4 star characters? As the 3 star roster grows and the time in between a 3* character being repeated as a reward grows, there comes a point where heroic tokens just aren't worth it because you've filled up all your 2* characters, and don't have enough of any 3* character to make it worth while buying the single cover for 1250HP. A 500HP token, (daily discount at like 300-400) that is all 3* character, would be something I'd purchase just to try and fill in 3* covers by volume.0 -
Just want to point out making every cover a rainbow would reduce the cover diversity by close to 2/3 right?
I'm down for other options but you know it took 3 months for respec to be developed and they are having problems with specialty tokens now, ongoing for several weeks.
Making things simpler us probably better for everyone. I expect a 3* token will be a reality within a few months regardless. Releasing a new character every 2 weeks is catching up.0 -
They do have those during hero LRs, 1100 per pack or 5 for 5000. Can't rmb exact price, but it was around there as there was 2 villain lrs in a row these past weeks. 3 star packs are named courageous packs irrc.0
-
Sure, but more like the generic 1* and 2* tokens. Something to put in daily rewards and progression, non event specific.0
