Best Abilities by Colour [Polls] (RESULTS ARE IN)

Posts: 2,332 Chairperson of the Boards
A year and a half ago, I run a series of polls to find the best ability for each colour (here are the links for those curious about the primitive opinions we held yesteryear Yellow, Red, Blue, Green, Purple, Black, and Passive). Today we have close to three times as many characters as back then so it's time for a new round of polls! Back then I ran the polls on the board's own poll option, but with so many abilities in the game today, that's no longer feasible, so I'll use external poll tech. I know is not as convenient as seeing the results each time you open the thread, but I hope y'all participate to get a nice sample. Without further ado here are the polls:
Yellow
Red
Blue
Purple
Green
Black
Passives
The cool thing about these surveys is that they allow me to edit new choices into them and you are able to change your votes at any time (the polls have no end date) meaning that they can keep being relevant as new abilities enter the game. In two weeks from now I'll post a summary of the results in this thread.
Enjoy!
UPDATE
Well it's been two weeks and over 300 people have participated in the poll so far. Unfortunately, as I mentioned in another post, SurveyMonkey cuts off results at 100 count for the free accounts. It's a well hidden limitation that I only noticed once we were over that mark and probably I wouldn't have used the platform if I knew in advance. Nevertheless, that's how it is and there are two options to go from here: The first is to just use the 100-people results. The second is to get a one-month subscription to SM (AU$24) to see the results (and perhaps take advantage of it and make several other polls). Problem is that right now I cannot afford it and I don't even know if it would provide that much value for the community anyway. What do you people think?
Also, Yellow, the first poll, has significantly more responses than the other polls (and every subsequent poll more responses than the one below) more so I assume people got distracted or tired and left the rest for later. If you did so, let this be a reminder to do the rest.

This is fantastic Pylgrim. Thanks for this.0

Why are you lumping the abilities of the lazy three stars together with their lower tier counterparts? For example, 3-star Cap's "Star Spangled Avenger" is one of the best red abilities in the game while 2-star Cap's ability of the same name is probably one of the worst.0
-
Thanks for doing this!
It was fairly easy to pick the red, blue and yellow abilities (both good and bad). It was a bit harder to choose just 5 from purple, black and passive. Definitely seems like the better powers skew to those colors.0 -
I've taken your blasted survey. Where is my reward?!
Okay seriously, the first thing that stood out to me immediately was how Dormammu's Aid wasn't hands-down rocking that passive list. My guess would be some people aren't divorcing the power from the character it is attached to. On it's own, it's an overwhelmingly strong ability. I reckon that may be the case for some of the other polls, but that struck me.0 -

Yeah, I remember that back when I first ran these polls most people were kind of taken by surprise by the fact (brought to relevance by the poll) that black was the best colour. Back in those days, Call the Storm reigned supreme as the most powerful ability and most decent-to-good characters had a green ability so it was taken as a fact that green was the best colour. However, where green had quantity (and CtS), black has very dense and high quality! Purple on the other hand, was a colour with neither and widely acknowledged as the worst colour. Can anyone say "overcorrection"?bbf2 wrote:Why are you lumping the abilities of the lazy three stars together with their lower tier counterparts? I kind of wanted to focus more on design and usability than raw power. Admittedly, I kind of had forgotten that the gulf of power between 2* and 3* Star Spangled Avenger was so vast.El Satanno wrote:I've taken your blasted survey. Where is my reward?!

I dunno, I kind of agree that Die Hard is the best passive by far? I'm not saying that it is broken, but I would say that whenever Die Hard is watering its plants and sees broken walk by, it waves and says "“Hey diddly-ho neighboreeno!” Also, I could hear arguments about why D-Aid is better than Master Plan and Arcane Incantation, but the fact that those two abilities are basically what make the most tedious and repetitive events in the game passable cannot be overstated.0 -
I submitted my poll but while doing it, I noticed how skewed the results are going to be. for players like me that are in the 3* to 4* transition phase, I'm not going to vote for most of the 4* to 5* choices because I haven't had the chance to use them.0

I think the reverse of this is also true. I'm guessing most people don't have a usable Quake but her blue is easily one of the best abilities in the game. On paper it may look meh, but in practice the power of that ability both in PVE and PVP is a game changer for only 7AP.0 -

I am perfectly fine with having all tiers be represented. Besides there are abilities that transcend tiers. For example, Widow's Sting and Unstoppable Crash may be some of the most widely asked Team Ups regardless of station while 2* Captain Marvel's Strategic Command is a key component of cupcaking in PVP.
In more annoying news, I just noticed that the "free plan" of Survey Monkey only gives results for the first 100 people to answer a poll which was never mentioned anywhere (you actually had to go to the pricing page to learn it) and some of the polls have gone already well over that mark. I knew the platform had "pro" options but never imagined the limit was so low. It's only $25 a month but I've been unemployed for a few months so I cannot shell it. (A bit of trivia: the most popular poll by far is Yellow, understandably for being the first link. However, Green is the most unpopular one so far, while Passives is the third most popular.)0 -
Thanks for putting this together.
The thing that most struck me, in answering this, was how good the passives are, as a class. I had no trouble coming up with three bad->terrible abilities in any color, but I really couldn't in the passives.
As a 5* player, it was also the only one that had more than one 3* ability among the "best"s in my answers (several had none).
I'd also agree that the answers are pretty skewed by people's experience. The newer, higher-star characters are probably under-represented. I don't know if I'd agree with the person who said Quake's blue is worth being in the "best" list, as I haven't played her much (and only have three covers in that ability), but I have played her enough to find that believable. And there are several 5* abilities that got significant votes that I have no idea about. And Nova and Venom both have great yellows that didn't get many votes.0 -
one I was considering voting for wasn't there. obw espionage was missing from the passive bunch (I think), or I couldn't find it.
thanks for doing this pilgrim. good idea.0 -

Heh, thing about the passives is that you cannot beat the cost. It is hard to find fault with something that comes free.I'd also agree that the answers are pretty skewed by people's experience. And Nova and Venom both have great yellows that didn't get many votes.
I'm fine by 5*s being under-represented since they are almost irrelevant to the greater majority of players. Some day it will be different but that's the beauty of being able to change your votes at any time. As for Venom's yellow, I believe it is at a fine place in the polls. Certainly it has nowhere near the utility of Recharge and while its damage/AP ratio is quite higher than Righteous Uppercut's, its impact is much lower. RU is a 3* power that can 1-hit kill several 3*s and cripple all others. Lethal Protector deals between 33% and 50% damage to a 4*'s life total, on the other hand, while leaving pesky protect tiles for the enemy. Also, RU is a superb flavour win while LP is a flavour loss... why is it yellow, anyway? How innocents being put in the way of harm mean protect tiles for the enemy? It IS useful and powerful but ultimately bland and forgettable. I could make a case for almost every other yellow power currently garnering more votes.TxMoose wrote:one I was considering voting for wasn't there. obw espionage was missing from the passive bunch (I think), or I couldn't find it.
thanks for doing this pilgrim. good idea.
Wow, that's a huge oversight. I'll add it in, and likely change my vote! Thanks for pointing it out.0 -
I find it hard to rank powers across all levels of rarity and i think so does the majority of people because i think i saw a trend there to the older, better known characters/powers. Still a nice poll tho.0

Okay seriously, the first thing that stood out to me immediately was how Dormammu's Aid wasn't hands-down rocking that passive list. My guess would be some people aren't divorcing the power from the character it is attached to. On it's own, it's an overwhelmingly strong ability. I reckon that may be the case for some of the other polls, but that struck me.
Characters with a bad rep seem to get bad votes even for their decent powers and those that have a hype train going get upvotes for everything too.
I noticed Dormamu's Aid too - what's worse is that it received 3 downvotes!!! That certainly doesn't speak towards hive intelligence0 -
Did the passives list forget BSSM purple or did I miss it?0

So you don't like Widow's Sting or Unstoppable Crash? Many veterans do.Xenoberyll wrote:Characters with a bad rep seem to get bad votes even for their decent powers and those that have a hype train going get upvotes for everything too.

Eh, that's just statistical noise. Also do remember that because the majority's opinion is not your opinion, doesn't mean that they are wrong. Technically doesn't mean that they are right, either, but also technically, it's is more likely for a few people to be mistaken than it is that the majority is. As for good abilities of bad characters being under-appreciated, I feel that it is logical to "discount" points for their inherent drawback of having to bring in the deadweight.Jack0fAllGames wrote:Did the passives list forget BSSM purple or did I miss it?
Ehhhh, noo, I'm sure it is there, check again. >_>0 -

I see it now. It's in the best list but not the worst list.0 -
Vision's red has multiple entries but some other multi-use colors don't. e.g. Nova's Takeoff/Rocket.0
