I know MPQ has been avoiding putting anyone in a CM role, even though their own employees (hey IceIX ) understand how vital that role is to a mmo-style game like this. Considering how understaffed demiurge seems to be, the desire to not put another person on the payroll or having some volunteer with no development connection to start speaking for the company is completely understandable.
Speaking from experience though, having one person by himself manage the whole forums, especially as a side job is a road that can only lead to burnout. We're all unhappy with how infrequently we have information shared with us, but consider that every time he logs on, he has to deal with:
and then ask yourself if you'd have the energy/desire to be open and sharing.
We're on phpbb, with a community full of helpful people that have been dedicated to this game for over half a year - many of whom are already making the effort to keep things civil and organized. Let's get some forum mods in here, (with a different color that displays that they are unpaid volunteers that don't represent demiurge legally so your suits can be happy), and make these forums a little less drama-filled/toxic

- Cleaning up personal insults/flaming
- Merging/locking threads to keep information accessible and not cluttered
- Dealing with the vocal 5% of whiners seemingly who don't understand that "new topic" and "new post" are different buttons
- Deleting ads from spambots
- Reorganizing the character discussion theads when the OPs go inactive/stop updating themselves
and then ask yourself if you'd have the energy/desire to be open and sharing.

I am surprised we don't have community moderators. I think it would be useful but who would be crazy enough to volunteer?0

Yep there are certain people on here who already have their "FORUM POWER" gone to their heads. We don't need to make their heads any bigger.0 -
Naming an unpopular forum member by name as an example of who should be moderated is the sort of thing that wouldn't fly around here if this place had a moderator.0

using the quote function on one of his posts from today isn't kosher?
oh well totes fine by me if there aren't posts like that all over the board in the first place~~~0 -
Tell you what, Pure-Eat-****. When you own this **** joint, I will give a damn to your **** requests.
Until that time, you should stick to what you do best. Go kiss some ****.0 -
Definently no. If they aren't paid by the company, and therefore affiliated, then I don't want them touching the forum with any sort of control. Simple as that. It works for fan sites, bit it should never happen with the official site of the company imo. Otherwise there is no chain of accountability and yo quote kanye "no one man should have all that power.". Ps, don't like kanye as a person. Some of his early stuff was pretty good though.0

I have an excellent idea!
Let's all create troll topics! We create a troll topic featuring the person we are trolling, quoting the person we are trolling, and then we post in on General Discussions even though it has absolutely nothing to do with the game, and we tell everyone how we should moderate that person!
We tinykitty up the whole forum with such troll topics, and claim that we are making the forum a better place! The irony is so stupid, it's funny!0 -
I've moderated a few forum sites, including professional ones. If you use volunteers you want a few of them across different time zones so they can do the job casually when they happen to be on so it doesn't feel like "work". They shouldn't be company spokesmen so much as... well, forum moderators, who just help the flow of conversation. You also need to set up clear rules for the mods before they accept the position so expectations are set.
For this site, a paid mod may be in order. Spam is becoming a bigger issue and as the community grows it also seems to be increasing in snark and personal attacks. Sending PMs to the involved parties is a time suck. And just today someone worked around the curse word filter.
Anyway, being a mod is more about personality and holding standards than damage control or spin.0 -
If asked, I would do this. If only to delete the (kitchen) spam and blatant abuse of the swear filter. I wouldn't be terribly interested in deleting posts or admonishing anybody.
I've modded forums for years, this forum is one of the very few I've been involved with that actually does not require a lot of moderation.0 -
Some of you are aware this is not a tryout for "Who wants to be the Mod?" right?
Save your resumes and acceptance speeches. Your just posting a troll thread.0 -
