New 5-Star Reveal - Wolverine (Old Man Logan)

Greetings MPQ fans!

I’m sure many of you have been eager to learn which 5-Star character is next to arrive in Marvel Puzzle Quest. We’re happy to be able to reveal today, it’s none other than the living legend himself, Wolverine (Old Man Logan)!



We grabbed MPQ Producer, Joe Fletcher in the hallway today and demanded he answer a few questions about the new 5-Star.

Q: Old Man Logan. Why him? He’s overflowing with awesome because?

A: Well, he’s a very interesting character in his own right, with a very well received comics run behind him and in the midst of a newer run, so he makes sense as a character in general. As well, we were looking for characters that are definite 5* material for our first outing in that arena. You don’t get much more 5* than killing the X-Men (oops) and pretty much all the Hulks (not so oops?)! Plus, Wolverine in general is a much loved character by fans, so having him around at almost all the tiers makes sense there too.

Q: Let’s talk skills. What have we got on-tap? Are the claws coming out?

A: Wolverine develops a system that we started with characters like Vision in that he can change abilities during battles, but Logan takes it to the next level. When a battle starts, two of his abilities are passives: He heals and he puts Strike tiles on the board when allies use abilities. His Black ability will deal some damage and place Strikes as well, but it also makes the team end the turn. As a gameplay feel, he definitely comes across as not having his heart in the fight. He’s helping and can deal some damage, but he’s really just going through the motions. That being said, everything kicks into high gear if you use his Black with enough Yellow AP. Once that happens, Wolverine goes berserk. He ditches the passives (including the heal) and goes for out and out damage. At that point, his Black switches into a form that deals damage, then consumes friendly special tiles to deal even more damage. With the tiles that are usually on the board after his form switch, he can pack a real punch against even other 5*s, taking a chunk out of the surfboarding Skyrider for example. His Yellow flips from passive healing to active AoE damage, dealing even more for each enemy still standing. His Red also switches to more direct damage, but has a component built in that deals bonus damage if he’s under a certain percentage of health. So he’s extremely dangerous to bring down as an ill timed Red attack can pretty well wipe out any 4* and greatly wound a fellow 5*. If you’re going to be fighting him, you really need to have a way to either keep his AP zeroed or stun the snot out of him. Luckily, unlike Silver Surfer, stuns do work.

Q: How do you see yourself using OML in-game? Do you have any potential party members in mind?

A: Well, Silver Surfer, obviously, since he’s the only other 5*. But that’s more of a power level answer than a team cohesion thing since they share two colors. For 4* cohesiveness, I’ve been running Star-Lord pretty effectively to bring down Logan’s post change AP costs which will pretty quickly end the fight after a few matches. Carnage is also a great choice since Wolverine can heal up the damage that Carnage’s tiles or his Red AoE can dole out. In a 3-person team I’ve been having fun with a rainbow team of OML, Jean Grey, and Iceman. Logan tanks 3 colors which he can do fine with his health and healing. Iceman tanks 2, and Jean tanks just Purple, leaving her in the back for the most part, so that her passive can be around whenever needed. You could swap out Professor X for Jean, but I like her in there for the ability to stop bad cascades in their tracks with her passive.

Q: When is he available? How do we get our hands on Old Man Logan?

A: Right this second. He’s in Legendary packs now.

This sorta gives some credence to the rumors that the next Wolverine film will be using an Old Man Logan storyline...

Almost looks like TU tiles. Maybe they've finally found a way to make us chase after those?

Heh. Accidental, nice catch! WIP feature that may or may not go Live (or at least, in the form that you see it). The dangers of taking shots on the QA server.

Actually, I wish they would start putting Runaways and Young Avengers in (how is there not a 4* Kid Loki yet?), and not just because the low incidence (prior to Iceman, complete lack) of LGBT heroes in the game was glaring, even for the Marvel U.

So I held onto my legendary tokens until now to increase my chances of pulling a 5*. Lo and behold, the first token yielded OML! Feeling quite fortunate, and looking forward to all the anniversary festivities.

Another wolverine? Between him and black widow there are far too many off them. Why no make gambit? Green goblin? Steven strange? Winter soldier? Each off those could be given a shot. Dr strange could have been a very good 5 star character.

Thanks for the new character devs I know I've moaned but only because you could already field a team of wolverines and it be cool to stop getting more of them

Bobby Drake's gay? (I haven't been able to follow comics for a long time. I remember Northstar coming out, and it making national newspapers.)

I am whelmed. In the preview thread in the Character sub-forum, lots of players made this prediction. And I was just wondering who the heck they were talking about. A universe of characters, and the "new" one, is the 4th version of an existing character. Come one D3.

Specifically, the younger version of Bobby Drake, whom modern Beast pulled into the present day along with the other original X-Men from their high-school-at-the-Xavier-Institute days, is gay. What this means for the older version is not exactly clear yet because Secret Wars happened.

Please developers, don't go down the Gamergate dark-side path of heeling to the SJW crowd.

Just follow the popular characters from Marvel and what they add to the game, verses finding acceptance of the SJWs (because once they have a toe in the door, you can never give up).

There is a huge pool of heroes (and villains!) out there, and I support not choosing one because of their orientation.

You know whats worse then people who are militant social justice people?

People who refer to all acts of any social progression or inclusion as an internet trend or something that needs to be stopped. But no one made this about that, so please don't do it either.



Interesting, are there plans to make a 1 star wolverine too? Wolverine and iron man could be the every tier guys I guess.

Since the young avengers, (or those who survived the childrens crusade) seem to be the make up of the new avengers, i'd love to see a 4 star female loki, or a Wiccan. Even teddie for the first half skrull character.

I am no miltant; I play the game, and not to promote any cause or agenda. I threaten nothing more serious than the cessation of my own funds.

That said, I would like more diverse characters. And believe me, I more closely resemble the stereotype of comic nerd than a lot of people.
