D3 is going to release more 4*, and 3* seems to be going the way of the 2*. The next 3* is going to be the 4*, and the next 2* is going to be the current 3*. I am considering to drop those less useful 3*... maybe doc oct or rag?
3*s are still useful because it is actually possible to max cover them with enough participation or a little HP. Most of the PvP events are still going to be 3* events (as are the lightning rounds). A boosted 3* can hit way above his range...
Cyclops can do over 600 damage per AP on optic blasts and about 900 damage per AP on Full Blast.
Doom can do 200 damage per AP with no trap tiles on the board (with that increasing by 200 damage per AP for each trap tile on the board... four trap tiles = ~1,000 damage per AP).
Also, most of the good batteries are also found in the 3* range. Doom accelerates Cyclops, Marvel accelerates Cyclops, Cyclops accelerates Cyclops...
I think we are entering into the era of 4*s, but until the ISO and covers become widely available, most of the vets are still going to be playing with a lot of 3*s.0 -
1) How many rosters slot do you have? 93, don't have Yelena
2) How many 2* do you have? (current game has 14 2*) 14
3) How many 3* do you have? (current game has 40 3*) 45 (and 8 babies or TUs)
4) How many 4* do you have? (current game has 14 4*, at the point when JG was released) 14 (5 @ 200)
5) What is your typical pvp score? 700-10000 -
1) How many rosters slot do you have? 86
2) How many 2* do you have? 14 (All)
3) How many 3* do you have? 50 (All 40 and 10 Duplicates of the most useful 3*s that i use to grind PVE)
4) How many 4* do you have? 15 (All)
5) What is your typical pvp score? i average between 1350 - 1450 per event.
I used to have duplicates of almost all 3*s and most 4*s. Even with the 1K HP per slot cap...it makes keeping duplicates very difficult. I just sold my 553 Fury Dupe to make room for 4* Deadpool...my last 4* Duplicate.
Roster slots should be less expensive. I think cost should be capped @ 500 HP per slot.

In fact, even for a veteran (old, not elite) player like me, I also have to manage my own HP expediture and roster slots can be expensive.
So that got me thinking about how many roster slots is needed to be competitive. I sampled the LINE chat groups and asked the players to self-report their roster slots. I also asked the*,3* and 4*. And lastly i asked them what is their usual scores in PVP.
Disclaimer:- i know that only looking at PVP scores may not be the best way to look at competitiveness. However it still gives a snapshot of whether the player can compete at the top end of pvp. I also received feedback that I should also take into account the number of max characters but i feel that it will be more labourious for the players to check through their entire roster, so i just leave it simply as the number of characters they have for 2*,3* and 4*.
TLDR, i asked players in LINE groups the following questions:-
1) How many rosters slot do you have?
2) How many 2* do you have? (current game has 14 2*)
3) How many 3* do you have? (current game has 40 3*)
4) How many 4* do you have? (current game has 14 4*, at the point when JG was released)
5) What is your typical pvp score?
1) 72 (Below plus Lv 40 Juggs, Lv 1 1* Spiderman)
2) 13 (no bagman)
3) 42 (Doubles of KK and Cage)
4) 14 (15 with XDP)
5) 800-10000 -
Not sure if number of slots/characters even amounts to "being competitive". Most of the highly competitive players have extra slots just for collecting.
To be competitive, a solid 3* roster is key. 4*s can help, but I honestly have been playing for almost 2 years and still haven't maxed out a 4* (mostly because I want ISO-8 elsewhere).
I would say focus on the following 3*s
Daken and Patch Wolverine - For climbing the early ranks. Bad on defense, but you'll rarely have to spend health packs.
Optional: Blade - For PvE. Daken protects Blade (make sure he's last) and works really well with all the strike tiles.
Thor or Cyclops - You need one really good damage dealer, and one of these two fit the bill nicely. Pair with a Support
Optional: Steve Rogers - For PvE, with Hood and Cyclops.
Loki or Hood - Support with massive AP stealing. Basically required in the higher ranks. Pair with your Damage dealer.
That's basically the only characters I ever use other than the featured character. Of course, you may want to keep 1 Juggernaught, Ares, 2*Widow, and 2*Storm for Deadpool Daily.
That comes out to minimum 8 character slots for your primary teams.0 -
Thanks to everyone who contributed! Didn't have time to consolidate it, and it is a pain to do it on the small screen of a hp.
What I noticed from the new responses, is that players who can hit 1000 comfortably would have most if not most of the 3*.
This is natural because the 3* currently forms the backbone of the roster. You have a lot more 3* boosted in any week, and they cost less than 4* to be competitive, and most importantly, the pvp only have 3* as ffeatured character, with the exception of 4* pvp when it is first released.
Another interesting observation is that the players who have minimal roster slots (60 or less), sacrifice their 2*.one player only have 2 2*, and presumably he is still able to clear DDQ with just 2 characters (Ares and storm).
About a year ago, the general advice for transitioners is to hold the 2* as they are easy to.obtain and levelled. However, once you move into 3* land, 2* gives very little value to your roster.
Many players have mentioned that with more 4* release, the current 3* will be the old 2*, with their effectiveness being eroded gradually. So for a player strapped of HP, they can really consider dropping those 3* that are less useful. This may include characters like QS, Rags, Spidey who are generally considered as lower tier.
Some have argued that throwing away 3* is poor advice bec they are still featured. I agree that if you have sufficient roster slot it is still better to keep them. But if you don't have the HP AND you already moved into the 3* - 4* transition, you *can consider* dropping the 3*. Moreover, with so many 3* right now, it takes a long told before the 3* is rotated back to being featured. Example, Rags was not featured for the past 2 months at least (based on memory, didn't check).
TL;DR, as you transit through the different stages of 2*,3* and 4*, and you are strapped of HP, you can drop the less useful 2* and even 3*. Obviously this is targetef more ar the f2p players who are strapped of HP.0
