Basically, the other games require you to pay at some point, and MPQ doesn't. Everyone who complains around here doesn't know how good we have it.

I understand in theory you don't need to pay to play this game.
I'd like to know how many 3*'s you are throwing away before you get the HP to pay for the roster slots here if you don't pay for them soon on your climb.0 -

I only threw away a yellow Hood early on, but that was in the early days with less 3*s around. However, I also figured out early not to buy tokens when I couldn't roster the covers I'd get. And I figured out not to keep/level useless 1* characters.
For all the limitations of F2P games, I would still say MPQ holds you back the least in terms of progression. Yes you have to make choices on which characters to keep. But you're never held back in difficulty. You can always compete with those who are the same level as you. And if you sit around and just play DDQ long enough, you end up accumulating everything in the game, albeit slowly. That's all my brother does now is play DDQ, yet he makes steady, constant progress.0 -
Work your way through the story mode and by the time you finish you'll have a full roster of heroes. Some rare, some common. Some powerful, some Hawkeye.
Made me lol.0 -

this needs to be quickly debunked.

The difference is so bizarrely large, MFF has actually been a (pleasant) shock to the system after slogging through MPQ for almost 2 years.
MFF is one of those FTP titles that I would suspect gets as many "guilt" IAP purchases as any other, simply due to how embarrassingly easy it is to not pay for anything and still meaningfully and quickly progress...
"MPQ doesn't require you to pay?" Oh man, now THAT is rich. Enjoy those roster slots...

And that's not even getting into Marvel Heroes, which is by far one of the most generous F2P games I've played.0

As some one who does/has played almost all of these free to play marvel games I would say that while none of them require you to pay real money, mpq is the game that it is MOST necessary to pay real money if you want to get ahead.
The game that I spend most of my time on is marvel avengers alliance and I have been playing it pretty much since the day it was relased and in the 3 years I have been playing I have never needed to spend real money to get ahead. I have every character and can win all the exclusive pvp gear every season. I have spent money on the game before when they have had sales but it has never been necessary to excel in the game.
I've only been playing marvel heroes for a short time but in that short time I can say that the game is very generous and there is no need to spend real money. The only thing you can't get easily for free are alternate costumes and all these do is change your heroes appearance. No need to spend any money unless you really, really want to look different than your favorite heroes base costume.
The game isn't mentioned in the article but I also have played marvel contest of champions and have never needed to spend money to progress in the game.
MPQ I am now on day 505 and this game is without a doubt the one that I have MOST had to pay money for to progress in the game. There is a constant need for hp to increase my roster because I don't want to have to keep getting rid of characters to make room for new characters and a constant need for hp to buy shields in pvp because if you want all the time you have spent doing pvp to mean something you will have to shield to end up with a decent final place. Also there is the fact that in all the other games the hardest part of leveling up a character is just unlocking them in the first place and then you just level them up by using them whereas in this game you need to find 13 specific comic covers with slim odds of getting a 3 star and even slimmer odds of getting the specific covers you need means that you will also need that hp to buy the specific covers you need for the characters you actually want to use. MPQ is by far the game that I have most felt the need to spend to be able to be competitive and I have spent more on this game than every other free marvel game combined.0 -
I have not played any other marvel games so I can't comment on them.
But I think the reviewer most probably rated the game from his experience in the 1* to 2* transition. He isn't lying.
If you think back the days of your first week of starting the game, MPQ was very very fun. The whole story mode was incredibly well designed and well paced.
Is it grindy now for 3* players? Probably yes. But just as what d3 did to alleviate the situation for 2* transition in the past with random 2* drops, and then 2* to 3* with DDQ, they are doing it again with Deadpool Vault. The dev is constantly finding ways to improve things... They may be slow, some of their decisions are questionable, but they are in this game for the long run.0 -
Oh, knee-jerk negativity, how I have missed thee. Almost a whole 10 minutes before you showed up today, slowpoke!
What I'd really like to know is how long the reviewer actually played the games in question. She does say she played MPQ most and Avengers Alliance the least, but these are very nebulous terms at best. I think it would be informative to know just how much time it took Jem there to decide MPQ is the top Marvel mobile game.0 -
I paid because I have acute collectionitis. A friend of mine, who started about six month before me, never paid. He had to throw some three/four star covers when he couldn't roster them, but he doesn't mind like I do. His roster is still ahead of mine by the way (I have more character overall, he has way more full 3* than I do).
While I always say "Beware" to friends who start the game, I must acknowledge that it can be enjoyed completely free to play (if you're patient or not a mad collector).0 -

That statement is either great sarcasm or the oldest profession...0 -
I'm on day 49 and haven't paid a cent. I currently have 36 roster slots with HP for two more and have had to dump Cyclops (this was a mistake), Daredevil, Hulk, ***Spider-man, and ***Iron Man during these 49 days. I now have 25 different three-stars and two four-stars (and ready room for two more with a third new slot only a hundred HP away).0

Reading this, I was "ready" to acknowledge I was not feeling the same and I could be wrong. Ready to be on "off troll" mode.
Then, I am sort of reading the article and find this :This grounding in the world of actual games is perhaps what led to Marvel Puzzle Quest being less of a nickel-and-dime fest than the others. And yet it's the one I've also spent the most real money on.
In French we have a say :
"Cherchez l'erreur !" (Search for the mistake)
How can one try to prove that one game does not require any money at some point, YET, it's the one he spent the most money on.
My 10 grounds had a good laugh too.0 -

It is not a paradox. In fact, many players have said this before, either in a positive manner or negative manner.
The positive way of saying it is "since the game don't nickel and dime me, I am more willing to pay a reasonable sum to support the game".
The negative way is usually "the damn game expect me to pay through my nose at every turn, I am definitely not going to pay at all".
For me, I was choosing between MPQ and another marvel game (Marvel heroes I think). I read that I can pay $80 to unlock a single character and decided that I am not going to pay for that. Mpq (during prologue) looks "innocently harmless" enough, so I decided to stick to mpq. In the end the money I spend is enough to buy a console.
I didn't regret it.0 -

Personally this made me lol. I quit MFF shortly after their HB release after about 1 month plus of gameplay, and I swear it was a bigger grindfest than MPQ ever was. At least during the period I was playing, by the time you reach 3* territory each character takes 80 biometrics to upgrade them to 4*, and you only have 3 chances to get biometrics in one elite mission 3 times per day, and it wasn't even a guaranteed drop. It took me more than 2 weeks to upgrade one of my characters from 2* to 3*, and that was with 2 elite missions giving the biometrics, i.e. chance of 6 per day. Read that, a possible 6 per day and it takes me more than 2 weeks to get 40 when I could have finished in a week. And guess what, after 3*, there's 4*, 5* and 6*. Happy grinding to upgrade further, I don't even want to know how much more I needed to grind out the next upgrade. I had more fun playing MPQ than MFF
Then again, I quit more than a month ago, so I dunno how much it has changed, but that 2 months of grinding has convinced me never to touch that game again. Good for you if you're enjoying that game though, I know my enjoyment level fell drastically after watching my progress.0 -
Puzzle Quest keeps spitting out characters at you, giving you new heroes and villains to join your roster in a never-ending parade of skin-tight leotards and lashings of Adamantium. Work your way through the story mode and by the time you finish you'll have a full roster of heroes. Some rare, some common. Some powerful, some Hawkeye.
sorry, this sentence about made me spit out my coffee.0 -
If you want to log on and match 3 every now and again, its a free game. If you want to compete to any level, some sort of outlay is needed. Lets not make out that D3 are some sort of charity.
Edit: I'm almost self sufficient at this point, but I had to pay to get there.0 -

Yoiu have that backwards. MPQ is the one you spend more than $80 on a character, MH only has a single one time cost of $5-15 per character to fully unlock them. 80 gets you a package deal with like a half dozen characters and costumes and a bunch of other doodads. Hell, during their aniversary sale, you could get almost every single hero in the game (like 50ish) for like $200
Thanks for the explanation. I didn't understood the package deal then. I thought it was funny why it costs so much. Nonetheless my point still stands, that perceiving that the game is "cheaper" to play may eventually lead people to spend more. That is the whole underlying premise of F2P.
And spoit, I would still enjoy mpq more than marvel heroes unless marvel heroes is going to have a mobile phone version....0 -
MPQ was worse when covers expired after a week. With two weeks, there's plenty of time to get HP for covers you really want.
I'm at day 255, and have spent a grand total of $2 on this game to get extra HP for a roster slot before my first LCap cover expired. I've sold a couple covers in the past when first transitioning, mainly 4 or 5 Hood covers (I thought he sucked, oops), a Patch yellow (since then I've fully covered his yellow), Punisher black, GSBW red and IM40.
Now however I have 46 roster slots, a few fully covered guys and decent stream of HP when I feel like playing hard for certain events. I could've been at this point faster had I spent more money or time in the beginning, but I really appreciate how this game rewards you proportionately for the amount of time spent (bad token luck not withstanding).0
