In the shield era getting a high rating is all about breaking a certain threshold. Like you'd be playing your games and you'd go up and down like usual, and then suddenly you'd see some guy who is shielded (usually because his points are way higher than you and you noticed his points never went down) and that's like hitting the pinata and you can just smack that guy 5 or 10 times over and over and gain 400 points and then leave the pack behind. Of course a lot of the time you never find that shielded guy so you never escape the pack. The more you play, the more likely you might find such a guy, but it's far from guaranteed.
You can still escape the pack the old fashioned way, by just pushing during odd hours, so that they're retaliating after you made the push

It's much easier to play on the west coast. Everyone else is asleep by the time you really start playing in the States.

    I play Thor/OBW/Hood.

All the big hitters this tourney require red yellow green so I just deny them.

It also defends well judging by the number of defeats and surrenders I get. The computer really cannot go wrong playing Thor, and hood makes it difficult to save AP for abilities while feeding my Thor.

    That's a really good team!

For all my complaining I somehow ended up top 5 in my bracket?? Not really sure how I was able to grind that out effectively.
The problem w/ trying to deny them strategy is I've gotten unlucky streaks where I just got pounded on if I was unable to stop them to match.

    Specifically thor chains.

Yeah, denying is overrated. There's nothing you can do about freak cascades
