The earlier you play the more stable your rank is going to be. Starting late makes sense if you only want the top rewards. I suspect your average placement will be lower for starting late, but if you only need the #1 reward, it's worth going for because a lot of the early brackets you'll quickly notice you have no chance of getting #1.
