Gotta say, I love the 8h timers

1 - You can wipe a couple times and it's no big deal. Wait a couple hours and try again, without losing too many points
2 - I can easily play both pvp and pve with a solid amount of health packs if I time my shields right
3 - You can choose to do half the harder nodes with 4h on the clock, so you only have to do a few hard nodes every 4h, and you're still clearing pretty optimally
4 - You can do the final clear with as many hours on the clock as you think you'll need. I've gotten top 2 ina sub clearing at the 8h mark before I went to bed. I also got an easy 1st by clearing with 3h left on the clock.

So overall, it's looking like 8h timers allow you to do pve at pretty much the pace you choose. Granted, I didn't get the most competitive bracket, but the final clears count so much more than timely sweeps that it seems like this rewards who wants to play pve the most. The way it should be.

Agree on all your points. I hope whatever data they collect results in them keeping 8 hr timers for PVE. I also hope me lucking into laid back brackets is also another mainstay.
  • From a rough eyeballing it seems like just hitting all nodes once every 8 hours is enough for somewhere around top 5-25 depending on how competitive your bracket is, though The Hunt has double the number of nodes you need to clear so maybe your place will drop further in a normal event that doesn't feature overlapping subs that are all on the 'hard' scaling. At any rate, given once every 8 hour is more than enough to be in the top 5% (top 50) it's pretty clear that people who claim they want to play the game more really aren't doing that, because if more than 5% of the people did this then of course you wouldn't be top 50 for just doing that. I'm actually pretty surprised on how little people are clearing and yes people always come up with reasons for why they're not doing well but given The Hunt scaling is extremely low this time around, that should easily trump anything to do with the desireability of covers. I know The Hunt hit 395 several times and this time it's not even getting close to 300 for me, and no matter how desireable a cover might be, you're not going to be able to grind level 395s more than level 250s.

Agreed, I was having a hard time on PvE, I only could compete in the short PvEs that went on through the weekend. During the week I couldn't play every 2'5h (neither wanted to). Now at least I can play once every reset without losing too many points and I can try to stay top 150 and get at least 1 cover.

Thanks for listening, Scaling still sucks, but at least now we don't have to grind every 2'5h against lvl 150+

Hated The Hunt, but 8 hour refreshes was a blessing.

Love it too! Please make this a permanent change.

    * I hate the thought that this trial may not carry over to the next event, going back to a 2.5-3 hour refresh is a potential game breaker for me *

I like the 8 HR timers, but I do think I'd like 6 hours more. That way I could hit nodes twice before starting the work day, and twice in the evening.

Still, so very much better than the 2-3 hr refreshes. I'm more willing to take a risk at harder nodes, because the penalty for a wipe is no longer risking a set of refreshes.

Just adding support. Loved the 8hr refresh. De-stressed the whole PvE experience.

Hmm. You could time your hit so you'd have 4h on the timers by morning, then another hit would take you to 12h.

+1 from me. As I mentioned just a moment ago in the sticky thread, 8 hours is a breath of fresh, mint-scented air. I too have left hard nodes to sit while I waited for health packs and/or used time in between to make runs on PvE and SHIELD Simulator. It's glorious. If they do any more putzing with the formula, I would like to keep the time long; 6 hours would be good.
  • Unless you're playing for top 2, missing an hour or 3 after you wake up isn't going to make or break your placement, and if you're playing for top 2, you should be a lot more worried about your scaling because it actually becomes a speed race at the end and whoever has the least relative scaling is going to win that. Certainly if your scaling sucks compared to whoever you're competing, it wouldn't matter what you do in terms of timing because your competitor is just going to end up clearing everything that much faster in the final 8 hours and handily beat you.

The only thing I don't like with 8 hour refreshes, the amount of unachieved node rewards. Even with 6+ play throughs I've got several 2/4 3/4 nodes.

They need to get rid of the 20 iso8.png prize until 4/4

No 100% right but well 8hrs is too long and i think 4hrs is the best

My current placement is 2nd is leaded by the 1st guy 8K points and 3rd is 6K behind me. still have 1 full rounds ( likly 5 - 6 hrs later) to go and the final hour charge

my PVE will be end likey 9 hrs ( 1st time slice). I will share more details in what i encountered in the PVE.

    Love it, absolutely love it.
But, just because it works for me - I want to be able to play the game around my life rather than the other way around - it doesn't necessarily work for everyone. I've been able to go relatively easy and still get t50 in each sub and be on target for t20 overall. There's been little pressure and I haven't felt I had to make time to play during the day or at the weekend, that's exactly what I want from the game. On the other hand, if I was the type of person who wanted to play every waking hour I'd probably be quite disappointed with this change as it's quite limiting.

    Edit: spelling

Tl;dr I love it, it had the exact impact predicted by the devs (for good or ill).

I love the 8 hour timers as well. I was fully prepared to basically step away from PVE and just play PVP but, with the 8 hour timers, I'll remain an active PVE player.
  • I like the 8 hr timers more than I expected to, at least so far. I'll be curious how they fare on a "normal" event.

i also ended up in a mostly relaxed bracket and finished at the top. What was interesting though is that the number 2 player had a pretty reckless way of doing the event but still ended up as number 2. If my observations are correct, player 2 would immediately do about 3 clears once a sub opened up and then play the sub sporadically until the end where he or she would make a final push. Player 2 would usually lead the sub up until the last hour and half, when i would make my final push after doing relatively optimal clears (waiting every 8 hours or so for the nodes to refresh) and usually finish ahead of player 2 up from anywhere between 1,000-5,000 points. i ended up finishing the event 14,000 points ahead of player 2 and almost 40,000 points ahead of player 3. I'm pretty sure we did roughly the same amount of clears for each sub although i may have hit more of the hard subs since i enjoy watching Patch and Hulk take down the super buffed Dark Avengers.

Obviously, player 2 lucked out that no one else decided to try to play optimally. i don't know his or her motivations for such a play style but i'm guessing they were trying to get in all the hard nodes before scaling got crazy. Then again, player 2 also has maxed out Patch and Hulk so who knows?

Anyway, having read the theories that 8 hour refresh times would be a mad dash for top ranking and experiencing something totally different, i was curious about other people's experiences and play styles. Anyone get to race another player to the finish line? i suppose the true test will come with the next new character release but it's comforting to know that you do not strictly need to adhere to the 8 hour refresh pace to place well (at least for now, maybe people haven't figured out the new system yet.) Here's to hoping the new 8 hour refresh stays!
  • I totally agree with everyone on a big thumbs up to the 8hr timers on PVE. It's made PVE livable, and still able to do PVP without feeling overwhelmed. Great job D3, now give us a great 3rd power for Rags and all will be good ..
