MPQ fans,

Squirrel Girl is here and she's making her first appearance in Marvel Puzzle Quest! To find out more about this fuzzy and fierce new character - you'll want to check out this cool interview with Demiurge Game Designer Casey Malone and comic artist Erica Henderson at Marvel.com.

The talk offers insight from those involved with bringing Doreen Green to life, both in-game and on the comic page. First-look screenshots and ability sneak peeks for this fun new hero are included.

PIECING TOGETHER MARVEL PUZZLE QUEST: SQUIRREL GIRL
Quote:
"Marvel.com: All right, give it to us straight: how unbeatable is the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl?

Casey Malone: [Laughs] There was actually a little bit of debate around the office about this! She should be able to take anyone out, right? After all, she beat Thanos! Sadly, we can’t actually have an unbeatable character in MPQ, no matter how funny it might have been to see Squirrel Girl take out Sentry without lifting an acorn. We still wanted to make sure players got the feeling that she’s a tough nut to crack though, and tried to tell that story in a couple ways."

MPQ Interview AT Marvel.com: Roster Slots.

Marvel.com: Alright how are you going to keep coming out with all these awesome characters so that players can collect them, sure seems like Roster spots get expensive as they go?

MPQ Team: [Laughs] There was actually a little bit of debate around the office about this! Should players be able to have all the characters without breaking the bank? After all, these characters are fun and needed in some enviornments like Heroic! Sadly, we can’t actually have players be allowed to have every character in MPQ, no matter how funny it might have been to see cool character ineractions. We still wanted those players that we basically made up to justify roster costs because those made up players think it's fun to make fun decisions about which characters to sell or level. MPQ needs to evolve in the coming year and we at Demiurge are extremely excited for what 2015 has in store for Marvel Puzzle Quest and our community because we want to release as many characters as possible and charge the utmost amount for those spots.

Mod note: not an actual quote.

Why do I have "a bad feeling about this..."?

Nice catch Phaserhawk & for bringing more attention to this!
  • There's nothing particularly wrong with wanting to charge a premium for the guy who want to have everything. It works just fine for say, MTG, as it'd cost an outrageous amount of money to have every card ever printed for MTG. Of course MTG also has viable, competitive modes for the guys who don't have every card that was ever printed while MPQ obviously lacks such a mode. I've been saying for a while but this game has an aversion to complexity. MTG has a complicated format system because otherwise it won't be fair to the guys who spent thousands versus the guys who just joined. MPQ seems to have a philosophy like "featured + 2 guys is simple so it must be good". Well, it is simple, but it's not necessarily good and most certainly not very fair.
  • booo! flooding players with way too many characters every 2 weeks there is a new one and ISO collection amounts havent changed nor have the price for roster slots, make your displeasure known.

It's a parody isn't it? You made me doubt about this. icon_e_confused.gif
Anyway the fact is that in the last Q&A devs suggested that the problem of endless increase in roster slot price will be addressed but since we had no news... icon_e_sad.gif

For some reason I find it pretty comical that the end of the link shortens to "irrel_girl" cause she seems like she could be totally irrelevant.
  • Oh ! I got caught !

    You're awesome Phaser.

I was wondering : what the f**k is the answer from D3 ?

Did I make that up yes. But I literally took snipets from other interviews. Sadly I'm not sure it really is parody because right now that is the straight up truth. They don't care, instead of making a better product and making money that way, they appear to be going the lets grab all we can model. At this point I'm hoping a third party buys them out and takes over. Maybe EA would buy them and do a game like the Simpsons that has been out years and still making money because they know a solid game with extras is better than what Demurige and D3 are doing

I don't have a strong opinion on Squirrel Girl yet either way, but I have to admit that I chuckled at Mystique's expression in the screenshot(s) - I pictured a significant percentage of forum goers making the same exact expression when viewing the artwork that was transpiring to the left of Mystique. icon_e_smile.gif What is going on with Squirrel Girl's mouth? And those dead eyes? I actually admire them for designing a female character who's not sporting the usual female superhero proportions, but yeesh, it's kind of creepy.

This expression can almost make me burst into a hard laugh.

This is literally the worst character I've ever seen. It pretty much makes a mockery of comics. A girl who's a squirrel? Seriously? And the in game art is just awful. The awkward angle of the neck? The Joker smile that's way too big for the face? The art for the comic is bad enough, but she just looks unnatural in game.

    From the interview:
Health in our game represents more than just how much of a beating a character can take; for example, Black Panther has as much health as Iron Man, despite Iron Man being inside a giant metal suit! But T’Challa’s got agility and tactics on his side that make him harder to knock down than your average guy in a panther suit, so he gets a little more health.

Can someone let the designers know that Black Panther has super human level strength AND wears a vibranium suit (Not just a cloth Panther suit)? It might help to be familiar with the characters in the game.

Oh hey, just found out thanks to this interview that the Squirrel Girl series is being written by Ryan North, the Dinosaur Comics guy. I might actually have to go pick it up.

Meh, I reckon Bagman could probably take down post nerf Sentry.

Blame Marvel, they're the ones publishing her. And she's a comedy character, so mockery (of some of the more po-faced tendencies of comic books) is pretty much what she does.
